How do the now two top guys in the divison match up against each other.
A very interesting match up, and a great clash of styles.
I've put up a clip of a dominant performance against a top level opponent for both of them. Martin Castillo for Montiel and Mijares for Vic. Then i have put up a clip of each of them fighting a very tough and under rated pinoy in Z Gorres.
Have a look at the clips then put your thoughts down. :good

Couple things to point out.
Montiel is very upright, and seemingly there to be hit.
Montiel is also very explosive as a puncher, something that gave Vic a lot of trouble against Donaire.
Montiel has a great left hook and right hand, both excellent weapons against a southpaw.
Vic is excellent at feinting, and theoretically should be able to draw Montiel into throwing power punches. After Montiel throws he leaves himself wide open for big power shots and is often times off balance.
Montiel defensively likes to pick shots off with his gloves, which is very hard to do when your opponent is throwing from angles like Vic does.
Trying to be as objective as possible, i would have Vic as a favourite in this fight, provided he carries his effective combination punching across from the Mijares fights, and doesn't go crazy looking for one punch. I think he is a much trickier boxer than Montiel, and can use his feints and his angles to both confuse and limit the offense of MOntiel, as well as create openings for his own punches. The biggest test here for Vic will be his chin. It is definitely shakey, and he is going in against a genuine puncher, and a guy who is very explosive.
If he isn't careful when loading up his own power punches, he definitely stands a good chance of being knocked out.
Very interesting match up.
What are your thoughts??

Well its far & away the best fight in the division.
Im not going against Vic in this 1...i think a KO will happen with Vic getting it after 8 odd rounds...but he has to remain patient as if he lunges in he will be open to huge counters.
Montiel does have obviously way bigger power than Mijares & it must be respected to an extent, especially early on.

Would love to see this fight happen. I think Vic has improved after his loss to Donaire, he is more patient and didnt look to end the fight against Mijares with just one punch.
Its definitely a hard fight to pick but I think Vic has a good chance of landing that straight left against Montiel. As you say though the big question is can Vic handle the power of Montiel. I wouldnt be too confident in picking a winner but Darchinyan definitely has a good chance it all depends on his chin and his abilty to land his left imo.

I have long been a fan of Montiel..He looked shit in his last fight but it was at bantemweight against a guy with an iron chin..not sure he took that fight seriously enough.
Im not sure how he is going to handle Vic..he may box him but I think he will struggle because he isnt as good a technician as Mijares and we saw what happened there. He may brawl with him...bad idea.
Montiel is boxer-puncher in my book..a decent boxer, a very decent puncher but not a specialist at both. He is a stand up boxer and fairly conventional in his approach, whereas Vic is almost the opposite.
I think he showed against Gorres and TooSharp he was a bit confused on how to tackle them and their style but eventually figured out both...Against toosharp he was to little to late and Gorres gave him hell, there is no doubting that but Fernando's hard clean punches were worth twice as much as Gorres pitter patter..Thats why I dont think that fight was all that controversial. I mean it was in the Phillipines.
They were both slicksters, with a defensive mindset (for the most part)..Vic is not that BUT he also isnt to average mexican slugger that Montiel can usually handle with ease..he is obviously very unique and awkward.
Vic will be favourite. I hate to see a loser, I want to see Vic get up but I will reluctantly side with Montiel here.

For all those that voted against his return, you can send your apologies here.
Unfortunately due to back door ESB shannanigans he was unable to return under his old username, but I'm sure we'll all get used to Jambo.

vic by ko, in a very entertaining scrap while it lasts, but having your chin in the air with not much head movement is very dangerous against darchinyan, especially with the angles and power he comes at people with...

I'll take Vic. Montiel is a decent puncher and slippery but not as slick as a Donaire or even Gorres and I wonder if he can find the target with a big shot which is his only real chance imo. Vic has shown great movement and patience lately and if he can find the target against the quality of Mijares (even though I thought Mijares own bravado worked against him) I say Montiel's in trouble.

I know Montiel will show up 100 percent for this fight. Knowing that this an important fight for mexican pride sake.Shaw the fatso openly insulted Mexicans by calling Vic da mexican assasin, "he eats Mexicans"etc. It's personal. Now it's time to make em pay. So, I am 100 percent sure Montiel will be the best. It'll be a war. No question about that.Umm they match evenly puncher vs puncher.First one to land that big punch I guess. Donaire vs Montiel in March and VIc vs Arce. We'll see. I believe Darchinyan does not have the defense or chin to handle Montiel's bomb.
im sure vic will turn up 100%, vic is a changed man, he has the skills & he does have a good chin, his angles & power will be too much.

I dont Vic has a weak chin but it wouldnt be any better then average at the level he fights at..The thing is he doesnt actually get hit that much, even with his wide open style.
His size and sense of distance keep him out of trouble most of the time against the guys he has faced..He has a better defensive mind then people give him credit for.
his chin isnt great raff.
i know its not great but its not bad either

Nonito's hook would have dropped anyone that night. Vic's chin holds up fine IMO.

I agree, his defence is very under rated, mainly becaue of how unorthadox he is technically. Against mijares especially, he was very hard to land on.
