SACRAMENTO, Calif.--A multitude of fans were waiting for Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao to show up at yesterday's World Cup official weigh-in here, but were disappointed when the Filipino icon did not show up with not even a hint of his whereabouts.
However, sources have revealed that the Filipino boxing hero had returned to the Philippines last night.
Yesterday, Pacquiao joined Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera at a Beverly Hills press conference to formally announce their Oct. 6 rematch at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Also present were promoters Oscar De la Hoya and Bob Arum.
Pacquiao was slated to fly to Sacramento yesterday immediately after the press conference in his capacity as team captain to the Filipino boxers seeing action against Mexican warriors today at the Arco Arena. Pacman, however, did not show up at the weigh-in, while the ever professional De la Hoya flew from LA to Sacramento just to grace the event.
Mexican team captain Juan Manuel Marquez showed up to cheer for his fighters, giving his boys the much-needed boost for today's fight.
Meanwhile, reliable sources from Los Angeles informed yesterday that Pacquiao decided to fly back to the Philippines for unknown reasons, thereby prompting organizers to ask if indeed he was interested in fighting Barrera.
An executive of one of the co-promoters informed yesterday that Pacquiao had indeed left Los Angeles to fly to Manila, and wondered if he was serious in his next fight. This was confirmed by Pacquiao's close associate Rex 'Wakee' Salud.
Pacquiao reportedly flew with trainer Buboy Fernandez, raising suspicions that the latter would be training Pacquiao the entire duration of his training for Barrera.
Last month, Pacquiao had indicated that he wanted to train at Rex 'Wakee' Salud's new gym in Cebu City.

Wow...not only is he not taking Barrera serious; he is also sherking his duties as team captain. It would have meant alot to his fellow paisanos if he would have showed like Juan Manuel MArquez did.

I am disappointed, expecially after reading that Pac will now train in the Phil for sometime with Roach.
Not making an excuse for Pac but it has been clear to me for the past few fights that Pac is not hungry as he was before. I hope he just pull his acts together for the next 2 or 3 fights then retire for good.

Last time it was Pac that had to prove he was an elite fighter.
This time it is MAB that wants to prove he's an elite fighter.
I honestly predicted Pac to beat MAB last time and won $250 b/c MAB said Pac reminded him of himself when he was young.
This time, Barrera will make the stand and do it like he did it to Hamed!
fuck pac! i'm one of his fans but if this is true then fuck him!

Damn man, I hope you're right. If Barrera were to actually pull this off it would likely be the greatest win of his entire career and would solidify him as not only one of the greatest Mexican boxers ever, but one of the greatest fighters to ever step into the ring period.
Agreed.
If MAB wins, he becomes a top 3 Mexican fighter.
A close loss keeps him right in that top 5 or 6 area.

Yes, only because I am making way more money now than in November of 2003.
Honestly, I think Barrera can and will do it.

Now that he is making a ton of money in fights, endorsements etc. I think he is not taking his boxing career seriously anymore, I have a feeling that indeed he is underestimating Barrera, what a waste if he would ruin his career like this. Success is getting way too much into his head. I hope I am wrong, coz he has what it takes to become an all time great.

Viva Barrera! I know he can do it in his last fight, just box smartly and pace himself. I think Barrera will take the early rounds as a disinterested Pac take some time to warm up. Pac will come on at some point in the fight, it's just gonna come down to whether or not Barrera can weather the typhoon that is Pacquiao.

I don't think it helps that, by all accounts, Pac isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. But I don't know why he would just bail out and go back to the Phillipines; there's even more distractions there, at least in the US with Freddy Roach he can have some privacy.

Pac might be able to weather a fight against MAB like this (maybe), but the first young gun he fights will smoke him if he doesn't snap back into form. I'm hoping a bout against JMM will wake him back up.
Let's just hope he doesn't fight on too long. I agree he appears to have lost some fire.

I'm kind of feeling the same. He beat Barerra and was a whirlwind for the next year or two; but now he's rich, he's famous, he's a national hero for the most part; and it might have all gone to his head and he thinks he doesn't have to train seriously to fight someone he beat the piss out of before.

He seemed to peak emotionally for Morales II, in early 2006. Since then, he's looked good against Morales, but not really dominant against anyone else. And all these distractions have to catch up to him at some point.
i hope this doesnt turn into excuse
i hope pacman gets a wakeup by losing to barerra....
you cant sign two contracts...run of congress...keep changing your camp and showing up late...while boxing.
but it's not exactly like he's fighting a young barerra, but i wish barerra the best.
it's not right for the fans, it's not fair to the sport. and i'm sick of pac nuthuggers.

i feel morales was shot by the time they fought, and still he lost the first decision.
Solis? He fought a guy who was 9-3 before Pac fought him.
He's not fighting the caliber he was fighting, and its all gone to his head. it bothers me.

This reminds me, to a lesser extent, of Mike Tyson in the late 1980s. Losing focus and losing hunger.

Great post, PAc is really not the sharpest, far from it... What he's trying to do here it seems is to push Roach out of the way...
I dont know all the details that went on with the Arum vs. DLH but it seems that a rift has been created between Pac and Roach..
why again trying to defend him?
Seriously WTF is wrong with this guy? he was suppose to be the team captian of team philippines and now this? PAC is fast becoming a brat... i can sense that he has somewhat lost that hunger, very sad... I'd say start betting on Marco BIG.
Pac is just going through the trials and tribulations of being a champion. He will soon be on the tail end of his career, rich and famous, and it will take more to keep focused and maintain his greatness. When he was the hungry up and comer he had a level of ferocity that was unmatched, but if you have watched boxing long enough you know that its hard to keep it over a long career.
Soon he will be fighting fighters on the upswing of their careers and they will be gunning for his head. This is where the rubber meets the road.
Welcome to the second half of your carreer Pac! :good

You guys are making too boig of a deal out of this, the same stuff happened with Pacquiao right before the Morales 3 fight and before the Solis fight.
Pacquiao is still training just not where Freddy Roach wants him to train at (wildcard gym), i wont be surprised if Pacman beats Barrera he'll dump Roach.

I seriously really hope, that Pac loses this fight. I mean, just to show all he has been doing would backfire in him sooner or later.
Better make it happen against MAB, so he can realize what he has done.

agreed, a loss would really wake him up. makes me admire barrera more. even with a fat bank account, he's still dedicated to his craft. manny on the other hand has been acting like tyson before the eventual melt down. he should get rid of all those leeches around him.

Damn, just read this on the Pacland, I even do not know if this is true, he was seen playing basketball in an exclusive village in the Philippines a few hours ago. :think
I feel disappointed too. Back then I used to hate guys like Recah Trinidad who villainized pac after he dissed that press corps awards thing, but I started getting disenchanted when he was embroiled in the GBP-TopRank bs and then the Barrera fight just dampened down my spirits. I wanted a Guzman or Valero fight. Then the stupidity of the elections (I rooted for Darlene to win).
I'm still a PacFan and though I was never one of those die harders (ie Pac will kill PBF threadmakers) now I just don't really care.

When I heard He's gonna show up in the World Cup it triggers me to Buy the tickets. i'm really dissapointed he didn't show up. Pinoys who drove from LA didn't even know the news, they won't even believe me.
I wore a Pacquiao Shirt & Jacket, so I decided to let the other Pinoy Boxers to sign their Authograph in the shirt. I told Mayol, inindian tayo ni Manny, I ask him what's the reason, He said he don't know.
Here's my speculation:
-Pac still has to finish shooting his Movie.
-Pac's GMA now & don't wanna mess with ABS-cbn. This is stupid, He can just hang one more Day & just be a spectator or just walk with the fighters in the ring. This is for Country's Honor, Not ABS or GMA!!!
-Pac-Roach rumored argument, DLH comments. This is childish, Pac has responsibility to be a Role Model. DLH is Right.
-Pac has a right to Train wherever he wants. Roach abandoned his fighters in Favor of DLH to train in Puerto Rico. Why cant Roach do the same for Pac. Pac has a point here, He's the Money man anyway. But why can't Pac stay for one more day & give support for Our Pinoy Boxers??? Wake up Pac!!!

dude, I followed this guy's career since his VintageSpots channel 13 weekly boxing shows in the Philippines. Im as big a Pacfan as anybody here. But Im not supporting him when he does stuff thats aint good. Im not a blind follower. I love what he does in the ring, it inspires and charges up our national pride, but with what he's been doing these couple of years, it kinda turns me off.
Still love THE PACMAN persona on top of the ring.
But Manny Pacquiao the person, not so much anymore.

I'm a MAB fan, and I really hope he somehow pulls this off....but I really don't see him winning this fight.
I didn't like what I saw in MAB's last fight against JMM. He seems reluctant to do the things he needs to do in order to succeed. Style-wise, a bout against Pacquiao is NOTHING like a match against JMM, so maybe MAB can get into some type of counter-punching grove where he ignores the straight left.
Problem is, in recent fights, that right hook of Pac's is starting to really come along, and even if Pac isn't taking MAB seriously, I suspect his punch output will be too much for MAB to handle.
I hope I'm wrong, though. I'd love to see one last great win from the Baby Faced Assassin.

What an interesting turn of events. For the first fight Barrera's excuse was that he had too many distractions on his mind and despite him being the huge favorite he got destroyed.
Now Manny is the one who's the huge favorite and now he seems to be the one plagued with too many distractions. What an irony it would be if Pac were to lose with the exact same circumstances as Barrera had.
One thing I still remember about the first fight was that barrera was yawning in the dressing room before the fight. That was one of the first (big) boxing fights I saw, but said to myself ''damn if a boxer yawns before a fight it just can't be good''
