"They reckon Mundine's fast," Shannan Taylor quipped after blazing away on the floor-to-ceiling speed ball at Wollongong PCYC earlier in the week.
It was Taylor's last session before he flew to a training camp in the Philippines yesterday.
There, he will step up preparation for his eagerly anticipated middleweight bout against Anthony Mundine at WIN Entertainment Centre on February 11.
Taylor (right) then moved to the heavy bag, saying almost to himself,
"This is when Mundine's going to sleep", as he unleashed a barrage of savage lefts and rights.
He worked the pads with trainer Brad Gallagher in an impressive display in front of the Main Event pay-for-view team, which was filming an advertisement for the big bout.
It was then that Gallagher really earned his bread, when he put on the thick body pad as Taylor worked through his power-laden combinations.
Taylor reinforced the belief that he is one of the best body punchers in world boxing, something for which Gallagher can vouch.
Both Mundine and Taylor are ranked in the World Boxing Association's top 10 middleweights, Mundine at No 1 and Taylor at 10.
Taylor will spend the next 10 days at the training camp in the Philippines before returning home briefly for Christmas and the birthdays of his daughter, Nathalia, and elder son, Rush.
Then it is back to the Philippines for preparation.
Gallagher will accompany Taylor, who will train under the astute guidance of Philippines-based American, Rick Staheli.
Staheli is former coach of the world's best pound for pound fighter, Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao stopped the "Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya in last weekend's blockbuster in Las Vegas.
"I've pushed hard for the last two weeks.
"I only had 21/2 weeks off from the last fight (against Dondon Sultan at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on October 31)," Taylor said.
"I knew about 21/2 weeks before the press conference (on Wednesday of last week) that I was fighting Mundine.

"So my mind's been tuned from the moment I sat on the milk crates at Hurstville in the back alley of the Boxer Cafe (where the contract for the fight was signed), my mind started to tune from that moment," he said.
"When I shook Mundine's hand at the press conference, that was the end of our mateship for 10 weeks.
"I'm very focused. This is a big fight," Taylor added.
"And that's what champions need - to do something big in your life.
"Fighting Dondon, I fought within myself, 65-70 per cent, maybe - because I knew I could beat him but I just had to watch his power.
"I knocked him out (in the 12th), I stopped him - no-one could stop Dondon - the last few fights were good.
"But this is a big fight. This is major. This is it."

you always hear the same rhetoric from Taylor. he has had big fights before and lost. he has pushed himself time and time again and come up short. why should we believe him this time?

For maybe the first time ever...I agree.
He is finished and wasted his talent long ago.

They want the punters to think Taylor can KO Mundine....sell 10 times the tickets if they do.....Maybe they need Taylor to drop Mundine at a press interview 1 week before the fight....that will sell a few.
Nice torana ash, is that yours?
