Now with Bautista out of the mix, Lopez is actually next in line for Deleon's belt.

Who wins and why :!:

I agree...they should learn from Bautista and not rush Juan Manuel. Give him 2 more years.

he'll reach mandatory status by next year...should he really forfeit it?

Good question

Personally, I think he should....he and his team may be very confident in his ability and want to get a title shot right away (and get some money), or they will take a lesson from Rey Bautista and wait a while.

I doubt he'll forfeit the bout if he becomes the mandatory. He'll take the fight, I'm just saying the outcome will look alot like tonights.

Maybe Lopez has a solid chin though. Had Bautista had a good chin , perhaps he could of made a fight out it.

Bautista was almost Ko'd twice by journeymen before stepping up. He has a great amout of skills, he just cannot take a big punch. No amount of fights can make a fighters ability to take a punch better. Bautista can improve his skills and avoid getting hit like Maskaev or Wlad . But for Bautista that would require an entire new style of fighting , to avoid getting hit.

yeah, that's one thing I can agree on. Juan Manuel should have a better chin than Bautista, so it should be a lot more competitive than tonight's fight. But I still like Ponce's chances of wearing him down through out the fight and stopping him in the later rounds. Juan Manuel has been passed the 8th round only once in his career and never passed the 10th.

I think Lopez is a lil green for Ponce right now.

Juanma will rule at 122, 126, 130, 135 beginning some where in the middle of next year. This fight shouldn't happen now!! Let Ponce dominate this weight class' other contenders, give Juanma one more "distance" fight, maybe even as part of the same card and then throw them in the ring together against each other in March 2008. If the fight goes down around that time Juanma KO's Ponce de Leon within 8 rds. His power is as close as you'll get to Wilfredo Gomez's and his boxing skills will prove to be as good as Wilfredo Benitez's. Juanma is a force to recon with in the making...

Also, they have tried to put Juanma against better oposition, but for like 3 o 4times those so called "contenders" chose not to fight him at last minute. I guess this kid does intimidate his opponents. I hope Ponce is really up to fight him.

I Agree It May Be To Early For Juanma. But This Kid Is Good. Has Hand Speed And Good Power, I Wouldnt Count Him Out. He Has Good Footwork And Stays Calm In His Fights. I Think It Will Be A Better Fight Than Every One Thinks!

Boom-Boom... Juanma will prove you are underestimating him. There are a lot of PR boxers that are not elite material in the making, like Juanma is. This is not a lie. When he faces Ponce de Leon, you and everyone else will realize how good he really is. I am not saying he is already the best. But he will definately kick some behinds starting next year. By 2009 he will be the best in all this sub WW divisions.

I don't disregard De Leon. He is great! But a fighter like Juanma only comes every once in a decade, and you will be lucky to witness his rise as one of PR's greats!!:bbb

It's too soon for JMLopez, I think he has great potential but he needs two more top 10 fights to take on a confident Ponce at this point. Eventually i see JMLopez surpasses Ponce in the overall skill department but skill does not make up for Championship exp.

yup..money seems to be the target nowadays...they dont care if a fighter is ripe enuf to challenge the champion...anyways, losing is not always bad here, it somehow humbles a fighter. (with some exceptions, some just cant get back)
