Special thanx to icemax, Ishy, Jeff, TFFP, SD, Dec, GoldenHoya, McGrain and Monstar for making this a great first few months on ESB.
In fact, thanx to everybody on the Brit Forum; you have all been great company on the internet. Hope you all have a fantastic festive period.
Without the Brit Forum pack I wouldn't be on here a 100th as much as I am; you are all a great bunch of lads; Being a good catholic Irish boy from Belfast I was brought up by my Dad and other relatives to hate Brit fighters, but you have helped me to become a Haye-hugger and a bit of a Calzaghe fan as well.
The Brit Forum on ESB is the top place to be on the "whole" internet, and you posters are the guys that make it so special; catch you all after Chrimbo:good

Sadly not my misguided friend.
British football teams, even back in the day, were not made up exclusively of english players; so it was alright to support them. I supported Liverpool because there was a good Irish element in them at the time (Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan and also Steve Staunton came through into the first team).
With boxers it was different, because they are just individuals; my Dad and my Uncles were all big Barry McGuigan and Dave Boy McAuley fans, and they hated all the brit fighters (not just the English, but also some of the Welsh and Scottish ones). It was mainly due to the way the media in England would go over the top with the hype, and it really grated with my dad (he's also just biased against the English full stop); and of course being my father's son I followed suit to a large degree.
David Haye is actually the only British boxer I have ever totally backed.
If you had things different then thats your story; just don't go telling me I'm a liar, because you don't have a fucking thing to back up your argument.

Look at what you are typing.
(1) IRISH boxing fans.
(2) IRISH nationalist background.
IRISH NATIONALISTS as a RULE do not like the Brits; this fact is pretty unrefutable I would say; even the most uneducated should be able to work that one out; do you even know the history of the troubles? Your Dad liked some of the good British boxers; thats good; shows he's a lot more open-minded than most; fair play to him. However, don't try and tell me this is the general mindset of Irish Nationalists from the north twenty and thirty years back; because that would mean that you are the one that is just talking fucking shite.

im using the word irish because you decribed your self as being irish. what your problem is that you are mistaking political opinions with sporting opinions which is a completly different debate. for fuck sake my uncle has followed liverpool all around europe. he paid £1000 for a ticket for a eoropean cup final in turkey, yet he is one of the fervent irish nationalist i know.you were talking balls, just admit it

you are talking through your arse man, not many irish nationalists support english football teams, you would never see kids wearing english football jerseys in the nationalist working class estates in the north, only celtic ones, wearing a man utd jersey in ardoyne in the 80's and 90's would have lead to a bad beat down

What your problem is that you are mistaking British football teams for entire British entities; they are not.
If you wanna talk about British sporting institutions then lets talk about the England national football team; what Irish nationalist is gonna sit down and watch a football match involving the England football team and not want to see them get beat; not many I'd say; what about you? Its just the ingrained mindset that we have over here.
Hence an English boxer should be more closely compared with the England national team than with an English club side; even more so nowadays: look at the numbers of foreign players, managers, coaching staff and owners of English clubs.
As an individual entity an English boxer represents England totally, while the England football team as a collective entity represents England totally. Club teams are not a good comparison, because things don't work that way with them.

that may be your perception of what english boxers represent, but when i watched benn ,eubank, mcmillian, hamed etc ,all i ever seen was entertaining fighters and because all we had was 4 channels it was all you had, it became natural to support these fighters, as my fathers generation did before that.

I grew up in the west, in Glengoland Park; I now live down the city centre.
I supported Liverpool as a kid, but always seemed to be sat by my dad's side rooting against British boxers and the England football team; thats just the way it was for me; it may be a bit of a genralisation but I know that there were plenty of others both inside and outside of my family doing the same thing (my family all came from the Whiterock area).
As I said, things are different now; I'm really big into my boxing, and talking with the guys in here opens up different doors for me (enlightens me somewhat). I'm from a different generation than my Dad (obviously) and once I got out from under his wing I became more liberal in my views; my Dad's a great guy in my eyes, but he just comes from a different era from me and has experienced more that would prejudice him against certain things. I always was for the guy who was fighting Hamed, Eubank and Benn, but now love to watch Nigel's fight and have become a huge fan; I don't like Hamed and Eubank due to their arrogance, but that is true for a lot of people (whatever nationality they are - shit, both those guys played on that factor themselves). But I now appreciate them for the skills they showed in the ring.
I'm not on this forum to gain brownie points from anyone, or to make everyone my mate; I've had quite a few scraps already (internet warrior style). What I said in my post I really meant, and I'm sorry if it came across bad for you; that was just the score as far as I could see it.

Well, I'm not going to get into this debate about the sporting preferences of Irish Republicans, because I wouldn't know what to say, but, every nation or nationality has its sporting prejudices. Try and find an Englishman who supports Boca Juniors or Bayern Munich or rooted for Sven Ottke to become the P4P king. Perhaps in Ireland those political or cultural prejudices were/are a bit sharper, a bit more prominent.
As for Hamed's arrogance; I personally see it as being significantly different to Eubank's - which was actually more of a genuine personality trait, IMO. I think Hamed is a more of a charecter, a persona, a front that he put on for the crowds, he was a showman, and a product of his times; the in-ya-face, pompous late 90's bullshit. From what I've read and heard (see the commentary for the Kelley fight & the press conference for the Vasquez fight) behind the scenes he is actually a quiet, reflective and polite guy, he also, almost without exception, backed up his boasts in the ring. :bbb

Thats cool mate:good
Your Dad sounds like a real good sort, and I'm glad you grew up around a guy that was like that. If everyone was like your Dad, the patriotic Irish streak without the hatred for others, then the country we live in would be a much better place. This will sound corny as hell but for me my Dad is not just my father he's also my best mate, but that doesn't blind me to his faults. I love him to bits, but I'm happy that I'm different from him in certain ways. Nowadays I'll give anyone a fair crack of the whip, doesn't matter what colour, nationality or religion they are; you get good guys and bad guys everywhere, not just within a certain group.
Hope you have a great time over the Xmas period.:good
I'm sorry we got into this argument in the first place.

Hey GH:good
I personally think they both played on the alternate personality thing to sell more tickets; I know that a lot of people tuned in or turned up at the arena just to see them get beat. Maybe you have more info on Eubank that I have; looking back on it now, I just can't believe that either of them were truly like that in everyday life.
They were both top-notch operators though; I can't fault them for their skills in the ring.
