This is a heads up to the Brit Forum faithful.

Some of you may have seen it already, but I would highly recommend that you purchase the documentary film "J.C. Chavez The Ultimate Mexican Hero".

I bought it at HMV today, as a kinda Xmas pressie to myself, and it was well worth the money. It may not be to the taste of the "Joe Public" boxing fan, but with interviews from Fernando Beltran, Jose Sulaiman, Bob Arum, Don King, Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, Jorge Arce, Mike Tyson and others it is well worth a watch by any serious boxing enthusiast.

A lot of it is just Chavez being interviewed (which was very interesting for me), but you also get a lot of fight footage from the great man's fights.

Here's hoping you all get it in your stocking in the morning and don't have to fork out for it (it cost me 20 quid; but it was well worth it - it really was).

Knock yourselves out; give it a watch:good

My recommendation would be the "Four Kings" book by Kimball, the best new boxing book I've read in a loooooong time.

Read that book in a day.

It was a fantastic wee book Gaz; I especially liked the bits about Duran KO'ing some opponent's wife after a fight, and SRL's brother after the final bell in Montreal had gone (they charged him and he just flatened them).

I also got a lot of extra info on Hagler that I didn't know.

A great read:good

Cheers mate, I thought I knew a lot about that time in boxing but that book had loads in it I didn't know. Roger Leonard getting floored by Duran was class!!! I like the way the writer assumes you know a bit a about boxing and doesn't explain things that don't need explaining to a boxing fan, also the tangents he goes off on with all the different opponents are very interesting.

I'll give the JCC DVD a try, I was big fan when he was fighting. Whats your take on the Taylor fight? I've always thought that Steele was the ref and not the time keeper, he asked Taylor TWICE if he was OK and got no response. Fair stoppage IMHO.

(1) Yeah, I liked that as well; its not the usual spoon fed crap that you get with boxing books, y'know where the author starts explaining to you what a jab is???

(2) I thought it was a fair stoppage as well; its interesting when you watch the fight on the DVD, because Stelle actually waves it off at about 6 seconds (which is enough time for Chaves to charge across and land a shot) but the official clock doesn't stop until 2 seconds before the end (which is when Stelle actually stops waving). You can never talk in definites with boxing, but Taylor looked like he was gone to the world and could not defend himself.

I hope you get the DVD Gaz; I have to admit that I had my eye on it for a good few months, but was put off by the price. Eventually I took a punt on it today, and it ended up being a bargain (Its worth it just for the mexican song they play - and translate - in the background to the JCC - Hector Camacho fight; priceless, I swear to god).

I'll pretend I'm a rich fucker and just say that I didn't mind paying the £20-00 for it; one less marble tile for the side of the indoor swimming pool:good

Buy the DVD Maka; I swear to you it is very good; you really get inside JCC's head in this one; I'll give you an example: there is a piece in the hotel room before Chavez' last fight with Grover Wiley, and its just Chavez and Fernando Beltran chatting; Chavez tells Beltran that he hasn't trained properly for this fight, and that if he doesn't get Wiley out of there by the third round then he will lose the fight; hence, he losses the fight. It may not seem like much, but when have you ever heard of that kind of pre-fight intimacy with a fighter; and a top-30 ATG for that matter. See for yourself.

Thanks for the recommendations Mac and Gaz :good. Came across the Chavez DVD on Amazon but wasn't sure hwo good it would be. Will buy it now.

My recommendation is Duran's bio: 'Hands of Stone, The life and times of Roberto Duran'. Excellent book which also gives a lot of info about some of Duran's opponents like Buchanan, DeJesus and Leonard. The author lived in Panama for a while to research the book so a lot of it is first hand accounts from Duran himself and those around him. Great quote from Buchanan in the book, "Every time I have a piss I think of you(duran)", referring to the low blow.
