Galento looks more like a fat Tony Canzoneri in this one.

The one on the right looks a bit like Joey Maxim to me, but he's too old. Tami Mauriello?

It's a bit dated actually but the acting is just top notch. It's not really a boxing film but it's worth seeing the performances of the pugs. Karl Malden's performance is very underrated.

Check out "The Outfit" when you ever have the chance. Roland La Starza is a hitman and Archie Moore does an even finer turn, with some decent air time.

Ha! I thought the same thing. Here's a hint: The second guy from the left is Kid Azteca. There's some context for you. And the guy on the far right is a no-name butt-licker (though the expression on his face is the giveaway).

Trivia question for you, young man Roger Donaghue though he never fought either ,is considered to have been partially responsible for Robinson,s win over Turpin, how so?

...I know of Donaghue because he actually trained Brando for "On the Waterfront"... he also coined the phrase "couilda beena contendah"! He killed a man in the ring around the time of the Turpin rematch. The man's name was Florez. I would offer an educated guess that the hasty stoppage of Turpin may have been because of the ghost of Flores.

Tommy Hearns

A harder one:

Manassa

Middleweight contender from the fifties.

mcvey
08-13-2007, 08:38 PM
Haven't a clue
Donaghue fought a guy called George Flores in the Garden Flores died Donaghue retired, just after this Robinson and Turpin had their rematch, the flores fatality is generally considered to have influenced Goldstein to jump in and stop the fight,Turpin was on the ropes but if you remember he isnt taking much punishment, amazingly Ray cant nail him with the finisher, remember this is 1951 fights went on longer then,so that is the influence,Donaghue trained Brando for the role of Terry Malloy,he evn gave Budd Shulberg the famous line,Budd asked Roger ,how far he might have gone if the tragedy hadnt happened,he replied"well I did used to cut ,but I could have been a contender",Shulberg remembered it and its in the film.

By todays standards you are probably right, but we are talking 56 years ago, ironically Goldstein was the unfortuanate third man in the ring when Griffith had the last fight with Benny Paret,Ruby refereed one more fight and retired.Gene Fullmer went on record as saying he felt responsible for |Parets death ,as he had given him a terrible pounding earlier.
