Hong Man Choi can never become the UFC HW champion. Sure, he probably couldn't because he isn't skilled enough, but more importantly, he can't because I doubt he could cut to 265.

How bad is it that the UFC's heavyweight class isn't open weight?

There is a superheavyweight division for 265+, but they realize that all the fighters there are fat, horrible, sideshows, or jokes.

If you can't get your fat ass down to 265 you need a new career.

I mean, I really don't.

It's the principle really. Would it be fair for Sylvia to have to come in overly weight-drained against a non-drained HW? Or Lesnar for that matter? This isn't really about Choi at all, that was just an example.

Fuck that. I hate these guys that are just there for freak show fights. I'm there to see good competitive fights between fighters of the same weight roughly. If they can't make the weight, that's just tough shit. If a beast like Lesnar can most of the others can too.

I just said it, there is a 265+ division, it's just that nobody cares because the fights are terrible.

So, you guys who think its a good idea to have a heavyweight limit, explain how excluding the possibility of a big, talented guy making waves in the division strengthens it? If anyone weighing over 265lbs is a joke, then they won't make it by virtue of them...being a joke, right? Let's say a prime Karelin wanted to become an MMA fighter, but couldn't because he couldn't make 265. Would you say, 'it doesn't matter' he's a joke'?

One of the problems with weigh limits is that they make for a huge advantage for the guys that can just about make weight, and if there's no real need for one for heavyweight division, why bother?

Yeah, that's my point. Also, even IF it were true that no one can be a good fighter over 265, is it fair that fighters have to drain themselves to make the weight when others dont, a clear disadvantage.

I mean, everyone knows Lesnar isn't ACTUALLY exactly 265 lbs when he fights right?

Promoters can hold superheavyweight fight if they wish, it is a real weightclass, it's just that nobody cares because there only like 5 fighters without a disease who can not make 265, Schilt is the only fighter I can think of who would be better above 265

Gan McGee fought Josh Barnett in the only SHW fight in UFC history; Barnett is the poster boy for why promotors don't do SHW fights, it encourages out of shape fighters.
