View Full Version : Larry Holmes - Badass in Disguise?

Broke his hand against Roy Williams and still won a UD that night. And Williams was a big, bad dude.
Ripped a pretty major muscle in his left arm prior to the Norton fight and still eeked out a close points win in a great performance.
Got up from Shaver's unholy mother of all punchers to win against him.
The last ones pretty commonly known, the first two... Not so much I think. They were news to me anyway.
Larry might get his dues now as a fighter but I never thought of him as a badass. Guess I was wrong. Go Larry!

Not very well disguised, IMO.
He had a miserable manner a lot of the time, shrewd and cynical, and always showed his toughness in the ring.
He attacked a suited Gerry Cooney at ringside after just beating up Leon Spinks, and mildly injured Howard Cosell in the process.
Outside of the ring and in his 40s he's shown us how to perform a running dropkick off the front of a limo, in the midst of reporters and with several law enforcement officers present.

Holmes is a badass for sure. His inner determination and drive are intense, watch some of his fights real close and look at the manic determination on his face at various times as well as his talking at times. Holmes could really get down and dirty, and i don't mean as in fight dirty. I think he had the mentality of a wicked street brawler hidden behind that jabbing boxing exterior. He had some serious balls as well as pent up anger at percieved lack of respect that could clearly be seen in the ring IMO. If guys like Douglas, Page, Witherspoon, Dokes, even Tyson (in ways) in a way had Holmes mentality they'd be dangerous. If Holmes was born with top level power he would have been an absolute executioner.

He always carried a certain amount of petulance in the way he carried himself late in his career, Many would say he posessed a giant chip on his shoulder..
He had a few bad breaks , following Alis shadow and failing to beat the so called Marciano record of 49 / 0..
He was an frigging maniac if he was hurt in a hard fight.. Very determined fighter who had to earn every hard penny the old school way..
He remains one of boxing and corporate Americas highest earners..
Bright savvy man..

Larry Holmes was a badass. All heavyweight champions have been, although each with a different personality. You don't make it to the pinnacle of boxing without the heart of a lion.
Also, Holmes as an individual demanded respect and he came after Ali, a combustible mix because the Tunney syndrome would dog him around every corner. To top it off, he suffered the ignominy of being placed at the same level as mediocre Gerry Cooney, for probably his signature title defense. And if that wasn't enough, and after 48 consecutive wins, a little light heavyweight deprives him of glory by tripping him on his way to tie Marciano.
Too much for such a proud man. This is why he foolishly came back against Tyson and then again four years later. This is why he refuses to lie down and die, still dreaming of stealing lovable George Foreman's thunder in a geriatric battle royal.
But I'm pretty sure at another level he is at peace because he had a hell of a run, founded strictly on his own merits and he deserves all the admiration in the world.

He doesn't wear a disguise. Tyson had to just about kill him to finish him off. He dropkicked Trevor Berbick off of a car, took the shot of a lifetime and won against Shavers, was getting beat up by Mike Weaver and finished him. He was a whiner though

He also went into the Holyfield fight with a ditached retina. Larry was a great street fighter out of the ring, and a master boxer in it...but he could still slug with most of the guys (Cooney, Shavers, Norton, Spinks).

He was a definite badass, one who I would not want to meet on the street on his worst day.

Absolute badass but not one to promote it ala Mike Tyson, Sonny Liston and George Foreman. One would find out his competitive nature during the heat of battle. A merciful guy (as he was with Shavers not wanting to hit an already badly cut and bleeding opponent) he was determined and courageous once tested. Holmes was never a dirty fighter and outside the ring was never involved in drugs, adultery and the like but inside of that man lurked an animal that would fight to the death protecting himself and what was his.

When he dropped kick Berbick, he landed on the tail of the car with his back, and got right back up.
After seeing that, I was always respectably afraid of Holmes. Thats a machine.

I don't care for the man at all. He's pretty much of a cunt, IMO.
But I will give him his dues.

No, he said it to Peter Marciano. He made the comments to Peter because Peter was very open about wanting Holmes to lose, so at the press conferance after making his infamous Rocky comment he looked at Peter, and forgot if it was Sonny Marciano or Peter Marciano, so he said "And if i hurt your feelings back there Sonny...is your name Sonny? (Peter says that his name is Peter)...If I hurt you feelings back there..so..fucking..what?"

"Sonny" Marciano and Peter Marciano are the same person, I think.
I think Holmes' comments were ill-judged but probably justified. Usually when some athlete or boxer is trying to equal or set a record he is not openly opposed by the record-holder or the family thereof.
All these old white guys came out to say Holmes doesn't compare to Rocky, fair enough, but some of them went on about it too much, and then they all come out to gloat when Holmes got beat. And that's why Holmes had issues. They'd already built Gerry Cooney up as the All-American hero against Holmes on a black/white thing.
Holmes was no angel either, but I think some of the American sports media were a bit rough on him. Holmes was a cocky, confident black champion but he wasn't Ali so he couldn't really win.

Peter was one of the ones openly saying his disaproval of Holmes and was pissing Larry quite a bit, which is one of the reasons Holmes made it a point to look at Peter and insult his brother.
I think Larry's comments were completely understandable, but it was still very wrong of him to say them. He has appologized to Marciano's family many times and recently even said that Rocky would've been his most difficult fight.
