Has anyone heard of Howard King? I think he was a fifties or sixties era heavy or light heavy weight. I,m pretty sure he fought Archie Moore, but am not really sure. Any Information would be appreciated.

From what I gather he was considered a decent fringe contender at best. I don't know if he ever was rated in the top 10 or how high. I know he fought some "name" opponents, like Archie Moore a few times, usually losing. I believe he had a draw with Moore at some point. I know he was also KO'd in 1 round by Moore in one of their fights, which someone over at boxrec commented was a blatant dive.

He was a heavyweight BTW.

The name didnt ring a bell, so I went to have a quick look at his record..Wasnt expecting for him to a have a decent write up on boxrec.

Here it is if you havent already seen it.

I knew that King was familiar to me for another reason, but I couldn't remember what until I just peaked at his boxrec record - he was the first guy to ever beat George Chuvalo, beating him on an 8-round decision up in Canada. Chuavlo stopped him in 2 in a rematch.

I see also that King has a win over Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson, but he lost as many fights as he won in his heyday and for all intents and purposes seems to have been a journeyman.

I never saw Howard King box . I read his name in the fight results many times way back then. When I looked his record up on boxrec I was amazed and actually got a laugh out of the fact that he and Archie Moore fought six times. They must have been real soul mates after so many fights. I see that he managed a draw with the "Old Mongoose" on one occasion and then in 1962 just before Arch got pulverized by Cassius Clay , Howard got himself starched in one round by the old professer. Three times in with Zora Folley and two with Sonny Liston, all losses and a loss to Besmanoff to top it all off. Poor fellow did manage to lick George Chuvalo one time but paid dearly in a rematch with a KO by 2 in the record book. Certainly a man of great courage to say the least!! Anyone have a picture of Howard King? I never saw one of him.
