View Full Version : Most devastating losses?

Psychologically, every loss is damaging to a boxer. But some losses are far more damaging than others. It all depends on what stage the fighter is at in his career. And his ability to re bound after being beat may tell us a lot regarding how that defeat has affected him.

What examples do you have of some boxers' defeat from which the fighter in question either never recovered, or was never the same?

Some just right off the top of my head...

Vargas / Tito

Tito / Reid

Tyson / Douglas

Vernon / Mayorga to a certain extent?

Arguello / Pryor

Taylor / Chavez

Zarate / Zamora

Any others?

Foreman/Ali (took big george 20 years to get over that)

Judah/Tszyu

Grant / Lewis (Lennox broke that man, and all of Teddy Atlas' horses and all of his men couldn't put Mikey together again)

Jones/Tarver (Roy became timid and gunshy after Tarver put his lights out)

Hagler vs SRL

Tito vs Hopkins

I dont think Lacy was as mentally beat down by his loss to Calzaghe as people think he was

Those were both of the ones I was going to mention.

Honeyghan-Curry.

Although weight troubles and Mike McCallum also played a part in Curry's downfall.

Zarate got so disgusted after losing a highly controversial fight to Pintor that he didn't fight again for like 8 years.

Schmeling's loss to Joe Louis was devastating on many levels. It devasted Max, and I imagine that the Third Reich wasn't too happy about it, either.

disagree with many on here...
Vargas/Tito, cause Vargas came back and even still has been very active.
Spinks/Taylor is a ridiculous mention, in mine and Spinks eyes he won that fight, hell definately be back.
ray mancini/ alexis arguello, this was just a growing pain for Mancini but he came back to fight another day.

I think Hamed/ Barrera is a good one. Haglar/ Leonard. Just cause both these guys were goners after their fight.

The biggest myth was Ali/ Foreman, i think this was the best thing that happened to Foreman, so i guess it was a devastating loss but life changing for the better.

Perhaps you are right about Vargas, but I sometimes think that he was not yet ready for Tito when they met. I'm afraid he was rushed.

It's possible that if El Feroz had faced Trinidad after a few more fights under his belt, he would have fared much better and would not have lost in such a devastating fashion.

Of course, that loss didn't really stop Fernando completely but...

That fight was psychologically devastating to watch. I don't know if I've mentally recovered yet :-(

Not that he is a great fighter but

Mesi-Jirov

Obviously Mesi was seriously injured, but essentially Jirov basically ruined his career. Mesi may not have been World Champion material, but Jirov wrecked him from every being a serious contender

I would have to agree with this. Mesi is kind of a sad case in this respect. And the bad part was that he was killing Jirov when he got hit in the back of the head...

I don't think Winky - Tito was anything of importance to Tito. I don't think he gave a fuck..I mean that shit was like a sparing match at 1/2 the intensity of a regular sparing match. That took no effect on Tito mentally at all. Everything was taken by Hopkins. Hopkins - Tito is what you call a devastating loss.

Tito vs DLH...I mean hell DLH turned into a wreck after that fight.. Losses to mosley...Comes out of the closet as being a queer..this fact supported by his attempts to sing very soft spanish love songs......The fight was close and he still lost his mind..Poor guy.
