Vastly overrated.

I was looking at his career at boxrec and it is not very impressive. 54 victories over fighters with 0 wins. and his other victories are not that impressive. I'm surprised he is mentioned as a great flyweight when in actuallity he seems to be slightly better then average

really what is that impressive about his record? 84 wins agins shit opposition makes him great? instead of calling me half assed explain why you think he's that great. It's my opinion looking at his record it's not that impressive.

The fights you're talking about all came at the end of his career when he was aging and past his prime, looking to make a living off bums. That's hardly the portion of a fighter's career to take into account when judging their effectiveness at their peak and what they accomplished in their prime, wouldn't you say?

He was a dominant champion in his prime (made all the more impressive given his tiny stature) with an impressive KO record over very good opposition from all different corners of the world, and should've held a win over Pone Kingpetch in their first fight by all accounts but was robbed. By that time he was past his prime anyway and after that fight and the rematch he started his string of poor opposition until the end of his career (aside from his last few fights). That's why his record looks so padded towards the end, but during his reign his opposition was very good, as good as most Flyweight champs, though I personally rate him behind someone like Canto.

Most of those were merely tune-ups in between title fights, and you have to take into account how inaccurate Boxrec can be, especially when dealing with obscure fighters from different parts of the world. A lot of times they'll list fighters whose qualifications they're unaware of with 0-0-0 records and that like, even though they were championship material at the time and had fought a larger number of fights. It's likely that not a whole lot of his early opposition was world class, but it was the ease with which he destroyed them at his size that was so impressive and earned him a title shot (he also had to do a lot of traveling around in order to get the shot). Regardless of how you feel about his earlier opposition, he proved himself at a world level by winning the world title, so it's not as if he was some unproven hack, he was a legitimately great fighter and the cream of the Flyweight crop during his era. He proved it against world class fighters and champions like Shirai, Espinosa, Dower, Yaoita, Kingpetch, etc.

There's also just the fact he was recognised for having great ability and that can go a long way to transcending any perceived weakness in resume.

He's a bit like Jofre in that regard.

pea, his frst fight with Kingpetch was more a coulda gone eihter way fight than a robbery imo.Perez was past his best by then of course.

Perez is an all-time great. His record as a 4' 11" champion speaks for itself.
