View Full Version : Do You Think Charley Burley Could Have Taken Joe Louis The Distance?

Apparentley both Blackburn and Louis were admirers of Burley, and Burley would probably have been up for fighting this fight - things were getting desperate!
However, he was no superstar, and although he fought and KO'd heavyweights during his career and in sparring, Burley would have had to have established himself at heavyweight and in spite of his great talent, that probably would have been impossible.
But perhaps Joe would have struggled with him. Deadly, but not the most adaptable, Louis would have been up against one of the most difficult fighters in boxing history, not to metnion an elusive fighter with incredible chin and stamina (never stopped), not to mention real power.
On the other hand, he's essentially a Welterweight with a history of losing to the bigger men with real quality. Which Louis certainly had.
Do you think Burley could have taken Louis the distance (15).

I honestly think he might have.
He would have more chance of doing so than most heavyweights.

This is how I feel about it - but I would probably pick Louis to stop him. Now, if Burley took Louis the distance, if he managed it, is there any sort of chance he'd...win? In your opinion.

Maybe. Louis is very overrated.
I remembering you mentioning this once before.
What about Burley?

Theoreticaly, but in practice he would have to fight to survive throughout which makes it unlikley.

Possibly, maybe even probably; but has been suggested it would of been merely;) an exercise in survival

Doubtful for Charley making it.

No. Eventually he would have been put away. He would be tricky because he fights AWKWARD. Side on and slipping none stop and moving alot. Louis would get to him. He isn't good at cutting off the ring but he would just keep coming.
It'll be like the Conn fight but I don't think Burley can take what Conn did. Conn took some all mighty shots to head and body. Eventually that sort of work would put Burley away inside the 15 round distance.
no
Burley was fantastic but this is still a big no

Nah, ain't happening. What heavyweight has Burley taken on that was on the level of Joe Louis?
If Louis hurt him he'd finish him.

Pea seemed to think he could take Hagler the distance and win a decision in his prime... Seems kinda like we are saying here but taking it a little further...
My answer is yes, but not most of the time.

who was the best, not biggest, but BEST heavyweight burley beat?

I think Burley was evasive enough to escape real punishment for Louis. Burley was extremely cerebral in the ring. Extremely.

If he'd fight purely to survive, sure. He's not lasting if he actually wanted to try and win it.

The only TRUE heavyweight Charley Burley fought was a journeyman JD Turner in 1942. Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and Lloyd Marshall were Light Heavies when Burley fought them...Charley Burley , great as he was, would have been cannon fodder for the prime Joe Louis...The only MW that would have a possible shot at a prime Joe Louis was Harry Greb because of his
tremendous set of wheels...Like timing a fly in mid-air...

When I look at the right hand to the body Joe made Schmeling scream out with, I just don't see Charley surviving too many of those. Burley utilized a similar stance to Max, but didn't have the same size or power. His highest competitive weight was 166. In his rubber match with Zivic, Fritzie was described as the harder puncher. Charles decked him in their first bout, and nearly knocked him out.
The way Louis put shots together, it would be difficult for the relatively stationary 5'9" Burley to last.

Logic says most of the post is pinpoint accurate...cept for the 'relatively stationary' part...Burley in the one film is economical with movement...but looks to be a ring genius in his judgement of distance. He had alot of upper body movement...and moved his feet when he needed to. Hence the term relatively stationary I suppose...Personally I think Burley would get his wins in a series against the other two notable Pittsburghers Greb and Conn. Those two are all timers...Burley is too.

Burley absolutely wins. Weight divisions are a tool of oppression by the Man.

No, but he could have made him look pretty inept for a few rounds. Maybe even sting him once or twice. I see Louis taking him out somewhere between rounds 7 and 10.

I also suspect Joe and Jackie would have enough respect to carry Charley the distance, if need be.

This really quite a stretch..no he wouldn't last the limit with Louis...and this shit about Louis being "overrated" is classic modern day revisionist horse crap.

Relatively stationary ? d little that i've seen of him did remind me of Roid Jones . It was vs Oakland Billy Smith . I probably seen a bit more excerpts . Schmelling never reminded me of Roid Jones .
Not that i m taking a side here , i just don't know what was in common 4 Burley and Schmelling .

That being said I doubt Louis KO's him in one.
