Joey Giardello was rated in the top ten from 1952 to 1963,apart from 1955 when he was unranked,he got his first crack at a title ,a version of the crown owned by Gene Fullmer,Giardello received a draw ,on Fullmers home turf,in a fight in which both used their heads for more than thinking. Joey finally won the title from Dick Tiger in 1963,he was 33 years old,why did it take him so long to get a crack at the title?

Giardello never got the proper handling he deserved; for example manager Tony Ferrente had a
criminal record and this was part of the reason why Joey wasn't licenced in New York for a while. The fact that he didn't have an amatuer career may have slowed things down as well. I'm not positive about this however and I recommend going to CBZ and asking Ron Lipton in the Q & A thread for a definite answer.

Giardello had the craftiness and skills to give anybody trouble on one of his off nights, and look concievably lick anyone on one of his "on" nights. He basically convinced Gene Fullmer, quite a fighter himself, that he wanted no more of Giardello. His style was pure poison to most guys. hE WAS ONE OF THE BEST BOXING WIZARDS THAT EVER GRACED A RING, BAR NONE!

Thanks Tommy, i'll keep an eye out.I recommend the Panter and Troy fights as strong showcases of Giardello's skill. Also the Walter Cartier bout, although I didn't see it listed there.
