Is Margarito Now Pipino Cuevas??

...........Odd title for a thread, I know, but I'm thinking of the possible parallel here between Margarito and a certain other iron-chinned Mexican who walked through whatever anyone threw and took opponents out.

Cuevas was tough as nails and seemingly impervious, but as soon as Hearns dented his chin, that part of his game left him forever.

In a way, this was probably worse for Margarito than suffering an early KO. He absorbed an insane amount of punishment last night, the very kind of sustained beating that, even if he fights again, essentially means the end.


Can someone think of some examples of iron-chinned fighters who either played into this scenario I'm describing, or more improbably, went against the tide and continued with productive careers afterward?

I think it's more that Margarito has always had a very good, but not great chin.A lot of people went way over the top on his durability after the Cotto fight imo.Some of the threads were ridiculous, stating he could never be stopped by anyone.Mosley isn't even close to a one-punch guy above lightweight either.

Cuevas may have been the same actually, as the threat of his power tended to ensure he didn't ship too much punishment in most of his defences.THe guys who were bigger punchers that he fought, tended to get taken out early.

Margarito still has a great chin, yes he got stopped BUT look how many clean haymaker type shots it took to stop him and he still could have kept going if it wasnt stopped, if Marg had a half decent defense he'd never get stopped

Then look how damaging Cotto, Cintron and Clottey have been to other fighters. Cintron especially is 1 of the hardest hitting WWs I've seen

However how much of the 'great chin' is down to him being the bigger stronger man is another question

Don't like it when any fighter gets really beat up over time.

Boxing will discard Margo in a heartbeat and he will end up shining shoes on some street corner in 15 years.....he has no other career skills.

i think marg was thinking 'How could it happen to ME'

i think he has heard the praise his chin gets and now he feels he has lost his indestructability.

i wouldnt be surprised if Marg is rubbish after this, but i hope he comes back and can become a chmap agian.

also i thought marg lost alot of his hunger after beating cotto abit like when frazier beat ali

What happened to mayorga after tito was similar, i can't see margarito being the same fighter again, mentally as well as physically this beating will have taken it out of him and fighters now know that it is possible to take him out.

That may well be true, its hard to know with Cuevas, did Hearns ruin him, or was he on the slide anyway or was he not that good in the first place, I'd always see Duran wrecking him

I would agree with the whole Cuevas/Margarito thing, save for the fact that Cuevas' bombs were natural, not plaster-of-paris induced, like Margo.

I think this kind of loss will really affect Margarito in his future fights. He was used to having an aura of invincibility but thats totally gone now. Will be curious to see how all of this unfolds.

I think it's even worse in Margo's case.

The thing about Cuevas was that, as Mantequilla said, he was such a huge puncher that many fighters weren't willing to let their hands go for fear of getting clocked in return. Even taking into account the hand-wraps, Margo was never that dangerous with one shot, so he has to rely more upon walking through an opponent's incoming in order to impliment his high-volume attack.

And that might be harder for him to do going forward

He might not be so willing to take the chances that he once did, knowing that he can be hurt. and his future opponents might not be so discouraged if AM walks through their first few punches. So, unless he starts developing a Plan B, Margo may well suffer a similar slide to the one Cuevas suffered after the Hearns loss.

Too early to tell .Only his next couple of fights will determine if he will steadly go downhill, and these fights have to be against quality opposition.

Margarito & Cotto are now in the same boat, We'll see how they can comeback from this. If at all.
