Truly will be missed...
Having grown up listening to his voice whenever a big fight was on, he always called it straight down the line an personified the fight game for me during that age...
Reg...may you long rest in peace!!?

Rest In Peace to a man who was easily my favorite British boxing broadcaster of all time.
You Britons were very, very fortunate to have this man as your voice of boxing. He was remarkable.

Reg Gutteridge and Harry Carpenter were THE voices of boxing, sad news. I'm not usually one for these celebrity death threads but Reg was a true gentleman and will be sorely missed.

Reg said that after Holyfield beat Tyson. Still remember it.

Like others I grew up with Reg calling the big fights on ITV. A great broadcaster with a really relaxed old-school journalistic style with a great choice of phrase, 'it's looking like a carnival in a car park' was a favourite describing the ring after the final bell had rung. Reg also turns up with some commentary at the end of a Morrissey track 'Boxers'.
I hope that ITV do something in tribute to Reg on their next show, and perhaps Setanta will be able to pay tributes on Buncey's this week.

A proper boxing commentator, who knew his stuff. A man who did just not commentate to get them trips to the States.
Boxing, as Reg Gutteridge knew and described, died over 20 years ago, and sadly, with Reg's passing another of the few links left to that sport has been cut.....

Just saw this, made me smile.
In a converstaion with Sonny Liston..... Liston discussing, with the commentator Reg Gutteridge, the differences between blacks and whites. Black men had fewer hairs on their legs, said Liston. Not true, said Gutteridge. They struck a £10 bet, and Liston rolled up his trousers to reveal just two hairs on his shin. Undaunted, Gutteridge rolled up his trousers to reveal a shiny false leg - the original was blown off during the Second World War.
Liston thought that hilarious, and paid up.

LOL, actually I heard the story went Reg was interviewing Liston, and Sonny was doing his intimidation act, so Reg got out a pen knife and started stabbing his leg whilst keeping eye contact with Sonny.....
Sonny called Reg, Mr Gutteridge for the rest of the interview and gave nice full answers to any questions.....
I suspect yours is the true one, mine the urban legend.

Reg was a commentary legend.... That line at the conclusion of the Tyson fight was a classic and I can here him saying itin my head now. I hope boxing news and co give him the send off he deserves... Without the likes of Reg, people who live and breath the fight game through and through, we wouldn't have very much to talk about at all.
RIP Reg.... thanks for making my memories of the fights you called that much more dramatic.

I've heard a similar story, don't know if its true though.
So did I, something about Liston pulling a door off it's hinges and asking Reg if he could do the same. Reg said he didn't but then plunged the knife into his wooden leg (Liston never knew about the leg) and asked Liston if he could do that

I was reading the story about Reg when he was in Zaire for the Rumble the Jungle (credit to Ben Dirs), and to his annoyance he found that dinner was just one course, so he ordered what he took to be chicken.
The next day it was chicken again, ditto the next day. The fourth day Reg complained and ask the waiter if there was anything other than chicken? To which the waiter replied "chicken? We only get that on the Presidents birthday."
Reg found to his horror he had been eating Roast Monkey!
Also it should be noted, it should be Reg Gutteridge OBE (rightly rewarded to him in 1995).

10 bells for Reg Gutteridge was observed impeccably by the capacity crowd at Glenn McCrory's annual Braveheart Boxing Dinner, last night (Monday)
It was even more poignant for the fact that Reg's long time friend and colleague, Jim Watt, was at ringside.
A man respected an loved by millions of boxing fans.
Farewell but never forgotten, Reg.

My favourite line was during the Benn v Mclellan fight 'They are not blinding each other with science' Quite ironic actually, given what happened.
