from Marty Mulcahey

On March 27th, 1982 both Wilfredo Gomez and Jeff Chandler defended their titles via 6th round knockouts..... nothing special about that right? Not unless you know that BOTH fights officially ended at 2:28 of the round!

So you think boxers get title shots way too early now? Don't tell that to Kid Azteca (Luis Villanueva) who fought for 30 years (1929-1961) at the highest level (fought 6 former champs) and NEVER got a title shot! He is still alive and at age 88 will probably enter the WBC rankings at number 1 in the lightweight division for "past achievements".

Back in 1985 it was recomended that (state boxing commissioner of New Jersey) Bob Lee (future president of the IBF) be fined for "soliciting contributions from fight promoters and casino's." I guess he learned well before moving on.

In 1952 German middleweight Peter Muller knocked out the referee of his fight! The punch was thrown on purpose after the referee warned him for low blows.

Speaking of German boxers. Some people to this day think Max Schmeling was a Nazi! Would a Nazi hide two Jewish children during the war (thus risking his own life) in his Berlin apartment and refuse to fire his Jewish manager even when asked to do so by Adolph Hitler.

Did you know Jack Johnson was sent to prison in Fort Levavenworth after losing the Jess Willard fight in Cuba and not returning Europe to live.

Speaking of Jack Johnson one of his opponents Victor McLaglen went on to win a Academy Award for his acting in the movie "The Informer".

Alexis Arguello never earned a Oscar but did appear in a episode of Miami Vice.

Sugar Ray Robinson fought the best fighters of the world in his era, so who does he say hit him the hardest? Sugar Ray repeatedly stated that it was Artie Levine.

Here is a good trivia question. What was Don King's prison number assigned to him by the Marion Correctional Center in Ohio? It was 125734. By the way he lived in cellroom 10, block 6. King was sentenced to jail for manslaughter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know Hector Camacho has Oscar Delahoya beat when it comes to being a original? Camacho signed a recording contract with Ditriech records in 1986 and recorded a song called "I'm not a visitor"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soccer can be bad for boxers! 80's lightweight Roger Medel had his boxing career ended by a kick to head while playing soccer. The kick was so powerful it took a six hour operation to save his life. At the time the 20 year old Medel was ranked number 14 at lightweight by The Ring magazine.

In 1982 American television broadcasters CBS told the WBA that if Art Frias did not defend against deserving challengers Ray Mancini, Andy Ganigan or Sonny Montellano they would not televise any more WBA title fights. The WBA wanted their man Ernesto Espana (twice kayoed by Hilmer Kenty) to get the title shot. The WBA relented and Frias ended up losing (KO 1) to Ray Mancini. Hey HBO how about doing the same!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone seems to think Duran was being hopelessly outclassed by Sugar Ray Leonard in the "No Mas" fight. But the judges had the fight scored as 4-2-1, 4-2-1 and 4-3 in rounds before Duran quit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They say Mike Tyson was a big boxing fan/historian (which is true) but how could he then rate Pinklon Thomas as a better boxer than Larry Holmes when asked to rank his top 10 heavyweights in June of 1985? His number 3 selection was David Bey...... urgh we should have seen the signs earlier :-)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of people like George Foreman for being honest, here is a case where it cost "Big" George $30,000. In November 1975 Foreman was sued by Erma Compton who claimed Foreman had struck her while at a hotel in the Catskills. Foreman who had just become a preacher answered truthfully "yes" when asked if he struck the women. And with that one word he lost $30,0000.

Fighting as a middleweight early in his pro career future WBA heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis lost a 10 round decision to none other than Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. Well how did that not get in the movie!

When Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johannson meet in their rubber match in 1961 it was the first and only that the same 2 men fought for the heavyweight title 3 fights in a row.

Bill Brady was the 1st manager of 2 heavyweight champions James Jeffries and Jim Corbett, it took Don King nearly 90 years to equal that feat.

The smallest attendance at a heavyweight title fight was between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston II with only 2,434 people attending the fight because of threats of violence.

March 21, 1963 is a unique date in boxing. It is the 1st and only time that two "undisputed" world champions lost their titles on the same day. Emile Griffith lost his title to Luis Rodriguez and Sugar Ramos lost to Davey Moore.

Joe Frazier became well known in America because of his Gold Medal win the Olympics, but it should not have happend! Joe was allowed to participate in the Olympics because Buster Mathis who won the Olympic box offs broke his thumb in a fight and could not go. RUMBLE IN WASHINGTON
Washington 1991, the rumble between Riddick Bowe and Ellijah Carl Tillery became a street fight. Both still fought though the bell has rung. Tillery his Bowe, which raised his manager's anger. GOTCHA!
Johnny Dundee (born as Joseph Corrara) was the one who introduced a boxing technique called "The Scotch Woop". The technique was simple, he bounced his body to the rope, and attacked his opponent with full power plus the power of the bouncing. This technique was very dangerous either for his opponent or himself. In the fight against Willy Jackson, 1917, Dundee tried the technique he invented. Unluckily, Jackson was faster. His straight banged Dundee's open chin. He was KO'd in the first round. Gotcha Dundee!(Source: GO)

NAKED BOXER
Timmy Larkin had full confidence when he was entering the ring to fight his opponent, Tommy Cross in 1942. As usual, in the fight done in Newark both fighters were introduced by the ring announcer. At that time, Larking put off his robe that he wore in the dressing room. LOL! He forgot to wear his trunks, and he was caught naked by the audience. Everybody was laughing so loud, and Larkin covered his thingie in big embarrasment. Ha ha ha. (Source: GO)

SCARED REFEREE
Sam Russell was the referee of a featherweight match between Johnny Curley and Joe Fox in Brighton. In the first round, a wild punch blew Russell, and broke his glasses he wore. The match then was postponed for sometimes, because Russell tried the best glasses for his eyes. Then, being unpatient, the audience created a riot in the arena. Referre Russell was so scared in the incident, and he run to save himself under the ring. He then announced the night's boxing result from there. (Source: GO)

BAD LUCK EDITOR
In 1910, the editor of San Fransisco Bulletin had a very bad luck. He was too confident that James J. Jeffries, would easily KO the remaining Heavyweight Champion at that period, Jack Johnson. That was why he publish his preview edition with the big headline "JEFFRIES Knocks outs Jack Johnson". He got so panic when he received a telegraph telling Johnson KO Jeffries. The bad luck editor then asked his staff to withdraw all the newspapers with very high price!

LIFE CHANGES
Sid BURN was a good boxer before World War 1. During his golden period, he hired a young sparring partner, Ted "Kid" Lewis. Everytime they did a sparring partner training, Burn threated Lewis so bad. Years later, Lewis became the Welterweight world champion, and then he hired his old "fella" Sid Burn who was "over the hill" already. Lewis threated Burn as he did to him years before.
The story continued, there was a young fighter joined in their training, Rolland Todd. He learned all Lewis' strenght and weaknesses, until one day Todd defeated Lewis in a world title fight.
It's true life changes.

DIRTIEST FIGHTER AND TRAINER
Luis Resto surpisingly defeated favorite Billy Collins in an undercard fight of Duran vs Moore. But, then Resto and his trainer, Panama Lewis were then banned for life due to cheating during the fight.
After the fight, Collins complained his dad and trainer, Billy Collins, Sr., who then walked over and grabbed Resto’s gloves and finding out that Resto’s trainer, Lewis, had removed the padding out of Resto’s gloves.
Panama Lewis was before also suspected cheating when he trained Aaron Pryor. He was also involved in a controversy regarding Pryor vs Arguello first fight. Lewis was heard asking for "the drink" in Pryor’s corner. They gave him a bottle, and he said, "NOT that one, I want the one I mixed…" This created a controversy, but none knew what really happened unless Panama Lewis himself. (Informed by Elizabeth, Frisco, Dennis, Enswell, Valentino, TIP, etc. in DENNIS’ BOXING TALK FORUM)

14 ROUNDS FIGHT
One Saturday night in Africa, there was a rumble between Australian Max Gornick vs the hometown hero Charlie Smith. It was scheduled for 15 rounds. Until 12.00 PM, the fight has done for 14 rounds. If the fights continued, according to a lawyer who was coincidentally seeing the match in the stadium, it would break the Sunday Observance Act. The promotor then decided the fight as a draw.

MIKE TYSON'S MOST POWERFUL BLOWS
It was a fight of Mike Tyson's before he was KO'd by Douglas (I forget which fight) broadcast live on TV. There was a small earthquake in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, then we were smiling and one of us said, "Is it because of Mike's blows? We can feel the punches while we are thousand miles away from Las Vegas!" At that time, we belived Mike Tyson was undefeatable! (JC)

BURNS DID NOT KEEP HIS WORDS!
In 1908, Tommy Burns knew that his opponent, Jewey Smith, would never resist to fight long. Then, before the fight, both made a deal that Burns would make a long fight to satisfy the audience of Paris, where the fight was done.
Suddenly, in round 1, the flashlight belonged to a cameraman burned the decoration in the ring side (you know how it was, the camera flashlight in that year!) - seeing the fire and getting panic, Burns forgot the deal they made before the fight. He gave Smith a powerful straight on his chin, and KO'd him! After this, Burns escaped to save himself.

Walcott then was fired after working for 2 days only, because he knocked down Louis 3 times in a training.

Abe ATELL and Owen MORAN, both Featherweight Masters, were equally satisfied after fighting in 25 rounds in 1908. The result was a draw, so they dealed to make a re-match. Owen wanted more than 25 rounds in the rematch, but Abe asked no more than 20. The Promotor stopped the bargaining and to compromise a 23 rounds fight. Again, the result was draw, but this time they decided not to make a re-match again. (DAN from Go)

AN ADVISE FOR LANGFORD
In 1917, when Sam E, Langford was going to fight the mean Fred Bulton in Boston, he requested an advise from his fellow friend, Harry Wills, "How to defeat him?"

LIQUOR AND BOXER
Before World War I, Irish Heavyweight boxer, Nutty Curan, flied to Paris to fight US' Kid McCoy, a 40 years old tricky boxer. In round 12, Curran floored McCoy. McCoy then crawled to the ring side, where audience put their brandy and soda. McCoy got a glass of the liquor, and drank it. He then stood up and continued the fight. McCoy then was decided to win by decision! (Aba)

Names of participants were: Joe Frazier, Jerry Quarry, Floyd Patterson, Jimmy Ellis, Karl Mildenberger, Oscar Bonavena, Ernie Terrell and Thad Spencer. Later, Frazier cancelled his participation. LEWIS’ VICTIM
The controversial decision of Lewis vs. Holyfield in March 1999 couldn’t be accepted by some of their fellow fans. In Philippines, on March 18, 1999, 2 workers argued and quarreled in supporting their own idols, and finally they fought using knives.
The Holyfield’s fan was killed and Lewis’ was badly injured in the incident. Does it mean Lennox Lewis really deserved to win the fight?
Some years ago, I did also hear the similar thing when 2 fellow Phillipinos fought and killed his friend when they argued about which came out first, egg or chicken. (Jeff)

HE FORGOT FIGHTING A MARINE
Sixto Soria (Cuba) was a favorite as the gold medalist in 1976 Montreal Olympic. He kayoed his three opponents before he fought Leon Spinks in the final. Soria was sure he would also kayo Spinks easily. Soria then threw as many powerful punches as possible as the first round started. Spinks was not easily punched, even when Soria was exhausted, Spinks took the turn to punch him to kayo. Spinks got the gold medal following his brother Michael in Welterweight. After the fight, Soria admitted that Spinks was really a tough marine. (Dan/Go)

STILL A VICTIM OF RACE DISCRIMINATION
NORVELL LEE, USA’s 1952’s Helsinki Olympic Game team member, fought for his country in Lightheavyweight. Actually he was a heavyweight boxer, and he must decrease his weight for about 12 punds before the competition. Surprisingly, Lee got the gold medal after defeating Antonio Pacenza from Argentina.
When he returned to USA with his Olympics pride Lee realized it was all nothing. He was arrested in his own hometown Covingto, Kentucky which race discrimination law was still valid at that time. He was arrested only because he queued among the Whites at a bus stop! (Dan/Go)

NO HEART
Joe de John really a no heart boxer! When he fought Henry Kid Lee in Buffalo, 1951, John knocked down Lee twice in round 2. John again knocked down Lee in the next round. When Lee was crawling on the canvas and trying to stand up, Lee’s corner men waived their hands to give up. The referee also waived his hands to sign the fight was over. John thought the referee asked to continue the fight. John then sent punished Lee to kayo. There’s no further news the decision of this fight. (Go)

LOST BECAUSE BEING A SOLDIER
Freddie "Red" Cochran got his welterweight title after defeating Fritzie Ivic in July 1949. Then while he should retain his title, and big money was waiting, he must join the US Army in the World War 2 – so his title was freezed.
After the war, Cochran had the chance to retain his title. Too bad, he has lost his condition after being a soldier. Cochran was KO’d by Marty Servo in round 4. (Dan/Go Magazine, from many sources)

WIFE’S SUPPORT
1895, Bob Fitzimmons was almost lost from his opponent, James J. Corbett in a world championship in Carson, Nevada. He had bruises on his face and badly injured. Seeing this, Rose, Fitzimmon’s wife, who was sitting on the ring side, cried and screamed louder than Fitzimmon’s trainer, "Hit the rib, Bo! Hit the rib!" Fitzimmon followed his beloved wife’s instructions, and started hitting Corbett’s rib. Finally Fitzimmon won by KO in round 14 in the deadly duel… "Thanks, honey!" (Dan/Go magazine)

SMOKING HABIT IS BAD
Tony Canzonery had a bad habit, he smoked cigarettes after training. His fellow sparring partner, Lou Ambers, has warned him about the bad habit but neglected by Canzonery.
In 1936 they fought for the world lightweight title. Ambers won the duel. After the fight, Ambers came to Canzonery, and said, "You know Tony, I always warned you not to smoke cigarettes. And this is the result of neglecting my advice…" (Dan/GO Magazine)

A Good Teacher
US’ WILLIE LEWIS, a Welterweight world champion, before the World War 1 was so popular in France. Knowing his fame, he often exhibited his skill. He often sparred with some young local French boxers, when he trained himself in a gym in Paris. Lewis played with these kids by throwing his famous jabs and straights only.
Years after, in 1912, Lewis fought a young opponent from French George Charpentier in Paris Hall. Lewis was so embarrassed being defetead by Charpentier on decision. The young champion practiced his jabs and straight he learned from Lewis more effectively that Lewis did. (Dan of Go Magazine)

The Best Psy War
Hartford, Connecticut, 1901. Terry "Terrible" McGovern (Featherweight Champion) fought his opponent Young Corbett. At that time McGovern was really a terrible fighter for his opponents. His punches are really terrible, and he often ko’d his opponents in early rounds.
Before the fight, Corbett made a psy war by slamming McGovern’s dressing room and shout, "Come out, you chicken bastard! Go to hell with your loss!" The angry McGovern was lost by KO in round 2. (Dan from Go)

One Hand Show
1927. Jack Delaney, the light heavyweight world champion, got a broken arm in a street fight when he got drunk one night before his chanpionship fight. He kept his injury as a big secret, until he fought in the ring. He fought his opponent Jim Maloney with only one hand. And of course Delaney was lost his title. (Dan from Go)

BOXING AND POLITIC
A young guy once asked the introvert heavyweight legend, John L. Sullivan how to face life. Sullivan replied, "Stay away from politic and learn boxing."

NEVER EVER UNDERESTIMATE EVEN AN UNDERESTIMATED OPPONENT!
That title is a perfect advise for 1947's heavyweight world rank Joe Baksi. After defeating English champion,Bruce Woodcock, Baksi was scheduled to fight Joe Louis for a Heavyweight world title. After the duel, Baksi was hanging around in Europe and spent a lot of money there. When he should return to US, he almost run out of money, so he signed contract for a fight against local Sweden champion, Olle Tandberg in Stocholm. Baksi was lost on points due to his bad endurance. Then his promotor Mike Jacobs cancelled the schedule, and Joe Walcott replaced his position to fight Louis. Then, in the next fight vs Ezzard Charles, Baksi was again defeated.

Being impressed with his girlfriend's fighting skills, Donnely then married her. What a love story!

John CONTEH, the former light heavyweight champion of the world opened a restaurant called "JC" which could stand for either his name or Julius Caesar the Roman Emperor. But the restaurant had only a few customers. Even 1n 1981 Conteh was fined 100 poundsterling after he threw one of his waiters to the tables. A year later, he went bancrupt.

SAVED BY THE MOTHER
In Southhampton, England on September 9, 1989, Tony Wilson fought Steve McCarthy. On the third round Wilson was knocked down and he was able to get up before the 8th count. He was then bombarded by McCarthy on the rope. The referee seemed to stop the fight by TKO, but wait... a lady, later known as Milna Wilson, Tony Wilson's mother, entered the ring and smashed his son's opponent's head twice with her high heeled shoes.

The referee suspended the fight for awhile to let the security guard Mina Wilson get out from the ring, then asked both fighters to continue the fight. Shocked and confused, McCarthy refused to continue the fight which made the referee decide Tony Wilson's victory by TKO in round 3.

"Thanks, Mom...," said Wilson.

Southpaw
Southpaw has its origins in 1880s' baseball slang. Baseball diamonds were often arranged so the batters would face east, to avoid looking into the afternoon sun. The pitcher's left hand, or paw, would therefore be on the southern side. ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) – (Jeff)

WELTERWEIGHT
This is about the origin of the word "Welterweight" associated with the division in boxing:
welter - early 14c., from M.Du. or M.L.G. welteren "to roll," from P.Gmc. *waltijanan, from base *wal-, *wel- "roll." The noun meaning "confused mass" is first recorded 1851.
welterweight - 1832, "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" (1896), from earlier welter "heavyweight horseman or boxer" (1804), possibly from welt (v.) "beat severely." ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) – (Jeff)

BANTAMWEIGHT
We all know the word “Bantam” refers to a small fowl (like mini chicken) which is associated to small people in English language, which then became one of the lightest weights in boxing. However, not many people know that the word “bantam” comes after "Bantam", former Dutch residency in Java, from which the small domestic fowl were said to have been first imported (1740’s). ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). The former Bantam residency is now called "Banten" Province belongs to Indonesia after its independence in 1945 from the Dutch colony – (Jeff)
