UNDEFEATED Australian boxing sensation Billy Dib will fight for Jeff Fenech's old WBC world featherweight title at New York's Madison Square Garden - provided he wins his next bout.
Dib's promoters, Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya, have made an appointment with new WBC champ Jorge Linares of Venezuela provided Dib wins his 17th pro fight in Las Vegas on September 15.
Dib takes the next step to a world championship when he faces Mexican Eduardo Escobedo at the MGM Grand. He last fought as a support act to the biggest-grossing fight in history, when his promoter Oscar De La Hoya dropped a decision to the sublime skills of Floyd Mayweather Jr in Las Vegas in May.
This time, the Australian - who is part of De La Hoya's Golden Boy stable - will fight on the undercard of the WBC super-featherweight title fight between Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez and Houston's 2000 Olympic silver medallist Rocky Juarez.
Mosley and De La Hoya have promised Dib the November world title fight against new WBC champ Linares if he beats Escobedo.
Dib has won all 16 of his pro fights, nine inside the distance, and returns to Las Vegas a month after another Aussie, Michael Katsidis, outpointed Filipino Czar Amonsot to retain his WBO Interim lightweight title.
Escobedo is a solid opponent with 19 wins in 21 fights, 13 by KO.
Dib's dream since he started boxing to overcome his asthma has always been to be the best in the world.
His brother and manager Emaid said yesterday: "Billy will be sparring Shane Mosley every day in preparation for the September 15 fight and provided he wins, he'll train with Shane in the mountains at Big Bear, California, for the November 10 bout at Madison Square Garden."

Billy is 21. Whats the bloody rush.
This next opponent Eduardo Escobedo i hear is a decent step up as it is.
Linares is WAY too much for the kid at this stage.

Linares is WAY too much for the kid at this stage.i agree what is the rush with getting Billy a World Title fight at the age of 21. i would at least make him wait 2 years before i even think about it.
WTF is Dela Hoya and Golden Boy thinking.
this would be my managing skills and thoughts for Billy.
Billy could be our best ever if managed right.
this would be my idea.
15/9/07 Escobedo
Jan 08 David Kiilu (27-8-2) Kenya
Jun 08 Carl Johanneson (26-3-0) England
Nov 08 Mzonke Fana (26-3-0) South Africa
May 09 Jorge Solis (31-1-2) Mexico
then after that i would give him a shot at whoever has a title that being
Joan Guzman
Edwin Valero
Humberto Soto
i mean what is the rush.

I fully agree Boppa.
Guys like Johanneson & Fana would be ideal over the upcoming year or 2 as they are fringe contenders/gatekeepers.
Good tests for a prospect like Dib.

Good tests for a prospect like Dib.i feel even though Dib went to the USA to get respect i feel more Aussies should go down the Commonwealth root and box UK and african guys until they are ready for the USA.
i truely believe that Golden Boy could undo all the hard work with this next matchup. Mexicans and young americans can really fight.
it might be over before it begins.

Yeah the Commonwealth route, was the old way most of our boxers went.
You see very few go that way these days.
Actually i cant think of many at all as of late.
Only African born Aussie Jackson Asiku & "Diamond" Dale Westerman spring to mind.

Wow.. Go Billy!!
Linaries by horrible beatdown though, but gotta like the cajones on the little chomper for stepping up.
Stuff waiting , if you get offered a w orld title shot , you take it , even if he loses , exposure is the key in the states.

Well he has been beating dudes who are not dangerous. Fellas with on average 3 ko wins between them, with 10 losses and half by KO. More KO losses than win. he is stepping up another notch. I think he has the skills. Whether he can do it. I reckon he could, maybe.
