what are some tips for working on defense?

Keep your hands up, you never have them up to your chin and you never bring them back to your chin after a punch. Dont loop the hooks, hooks should be all body. A descent boxer would of been able to see and counter every hook you threw. Elbows in also. You always have them flared to your sides, have them touching your side. And dont square up so much, have your none dominant side leading.

thanks man, that videos about 2 weeks old, like i said i have no trainer so im kinda learning on the fly. thanks for the tips. what do you mean hooks should be all body?

TheRock49
01-27-2009, 03:34 PM
(How I was tought, Im being taught by the Womens WBE world middleweight belt holder so Ima do what she says...) hooks should never ever loop, they should be quick and short. When you have your left fist up to your chin for axample, only take it out a foot or so, throw your elbow up to shoulder height, and pivot. So turn you left foot on your toes, turn your knee in, you waist and shoulders should turn so your left side is almost the only thing facing forward. Then quickly snap back to your stance. I think I explained it ok... Its hard to explain, you gotta have the visual. Hope this helps though.

Work more on technique then trying to throw fast and hard.Maybe work on just getting the jab down first and then work on basic combinations and go for there.

Its true that if you joined a gym you would learn quickest.

With that said if I was admin I would temp ban everyone that said it in this thread.
You guys, learn to add something or move on, your join a gym advice is played the fuck out.

RDJ you might as well get it over with and change the forum name to the "Join-a-gym forum". Jesus H.

Now to advice:

- Start off by forgeting you have ever seen Muhammad Ali box. Your guard stinks. When your not throwing punches, keep your hands up in between your chin/cheek. ESPECIALLY your right hand. Your right hand should never be below your chin when your not using, that means even when your puncing, like this

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

-Keep your elbows tucked at your side, when your hitting the bag or shadowboxing you should try and feel them there. Your stance should look like this when your not puncing. This is what you need to learn first and when you go to them gym, other then doing excercises to get in shape this is how you will need to learn to stand:

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

And even his right hand is low in my opinion.

- You look like you have some pop and decent footwork and are getting leverage on your hooks. Your straight punches are just arm punches, learn to sit down on them. In boxing that means bend your knees and feel your power coming from your ass/thighs and starting from your feet. Your slapping your hooks like Malinaggi or Calslapp.. I mean Calzaghe. If your going to throw a hook do it properly by making your elbow/arm COMPLETELY parrellel to the ground and then turning into it, to get the full power. Remember keep your other hand up. Should look like this

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

If you don't have a trainer/gym, then record yourself then critique yourself on your fundamentals.
Don't try and be flashy. You can workout in other ways to lose weight but learn to throw punches properly with good boxing technique is the best way to go, THEN use it as a stress reliever.

When you think you've made some progress your welcome to post again here again for feedback.

As you know I share part of your criticism but I think you are overreacting. He should join a gym if he wants to box. Otherwise he should take criticism of the others. I personally did not know where to start because he basically does everything wrong so my new "join a gym" is pointing to the instructional video thread.

Youngblood

tnx for the kink in my neck, for starters.

Secondly, the bag is your friend. Don't hate the bag.

Thirdly, hands up...when throwing a punch make sure the other is by your chin. Start throwing straighter.

HairyHighlander
01-28-2009, 08:55 AM
Fair play on firing up the vid. You need to relax first. Not sure if anyone said but keep the chin down and in, you will then not need to keep your hands as high to protect it as its gonna be lower. Fire up another video when you feel you have ironed some stuff out as someone said.

You may feel it's worse or your feeling slower but it will be better than you realise. Practise some simple patterns as RDJ's thread show's, no need for bag, slow formbuilding shadow boxing will be just as good.

Remember less is more sometimes :deal

All the best :good

Again no one is arguining the validity of telling a guy to join a gym; there is no better and faster way to learn obviously.

But am I crazy or does a bunch of guys just responding saying only that is just not seem useful or helpful? It does seem pretty stupid when the guy says he is NOT at the gym right now and asks for advice, and initially gets barraged by people saying go to the gym.

Its like someone starting a thread saying 'Please critique my drawing' with the poster uploading a drawing of gis and explaining that he doesn't have time/access to drawing classes and then everyone tells him to take drawing classes.

I would recommend checking the stickies with videos (basic punches/stance) before anything else...

I would shadowbox just using a jab, and footwork, stepping with jab, etc. Starting slow till its in your head and you dont have to think about how to do it right.....Until you can do that, dont even throw a right hand or a hook.

As someone mentioned, work on your jab and positioning before even throwing your right when you use the bag or even shadowbox i guess. I mentioned some light shadowboxing..more in a stretching sense, just slow and trying to keep good form......and yeah i know after a few mins you will wanna say fuck this and tear up that bag :hey

How about working left and right around the bag. Just footwork. Not easy to explain in words.

FAQ - Training at Home (Read before Posting)
A question that comes up often involves the best method of training stand-up on your own. If your goals are to compete or just become a competent hobbyist, then there are a million reasons why "training yourself" is a bad idea. For one, any stand-up art, from boxing to muay thai, to whatever else, is very unnatural. You have to re-train your body to do movements that will feel very strange or awkward at first. There is no doubt that you will pick up bad habits that will have to be un-learned if/when you ever do decide to actually join a gym or hire a coach. Its harder to un-learn something than it is just to learn correctly the first time. Another problem with the home learners is that they pick up tips and bits of useful information and don't know how to put it together. They have heard that they have to "keep their hands up," so they focus on that. Meanwhile, their head and body are completely statue-like, they never bend at the knee, and are stiff as a board. A proper trainer helps iron out all these little tid-bits so that everything flows together a lot more smoothly. Gym-trained fighters look relaxed, smooth, and confident. They have ring generalship and a solid understanding of the fundamentals. A home-trained "fighter" is stiff, jittery, tight, and completely un-polished. The problem is that the vast majority of men think they know how to handle themselves in a fight, despite any evidence to back it up. Practice by yourself long enough, and you can fool yourself into thinking that you are doing well. That's why we see so many home videos of people "shadow boxing," or even worse, "sparring" in their backyards or bedrooms.

Now, if you are just looking to get a workout in, then feel free to whale away at a heavy bag until you're exhausted. You can definitely use it as a way to lose fat, build muscle, or just relieve some stress. If finding a gym is truly not an option due to financial problems, a lack of a worth-while gym close by, time issues, etc., then I guess that ordering instructional videos could act as a replacement, albeit a very, very poor one.

damn dude did you read? i dont got the time or money for a trainer right now, how am i trying to impress anyone by posting a video and asking for tips n critiques?

It will take you forever without a trainer.
Find one.
They are out there and looking for potential fighters with desire and heart.
Otherwise --- continue on --- you are getting a real good cardio work out and it will improve your fitness nevertheless.
