Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler is a match of TITANIC proportions, two masters facing off for the divisions first truly Undisputed Champion, how can anyone deny that this is NOT that most intriguing fight in boxing in the near future.
If Kessler wins, he is thrusted into the P4P rankings.
If Calzaghe wins, he is a cemented ATG and the cemented #1 SMW in the divisions history.
Whoever wins, the first Undisputed SMW is crowned, in a division that is one of the best in boxing currently.

Interesting - Palle made it clear from the start that Kessler will go to England if ****** offers the same deal to Kessler as Palle has to Calzaghe. That the deal isn't signed yet could indicate that this might very well happen...
But what a fight if it comes of - 39 and 42 fights undefeated - both unified champions - been awhile since we saw a fight like that...

Taylor-Spinks?
Nah, this one will be historical, but mostly for entirely different reasons. The reason being that these two are arguably both current top 10 p4p fighters in terms of skill level. They are currently a level above the rest in an already deep and good division.
It is one of those megafights that only come about ever so rarely.
Most "mega fights" are really just "one name agaisnt another" but without REAL substance (one example is the Taylor-Spinks fight and another the Tarver-Hopkins fight).
This one is the real thing. That's all there is to it.

This won't be fight of the decade for one single reason
Kessler has a gameplan that doesn't change and hasn't changed in any of his fights thus far - the gameplan works for him and he'll believe it will work against Joe Calzaghe.
Due to this, Kessler is either going to out-box Calzaghe all night or Calzaghe is going to out-box Kessler all night
I take the latter, with TKO late to Calzaghe.
Why the late TKO??? - after all Calzaghe has only stopped one in his last six fights - some of them versus opponents that are "stopable".
Kessler adapted just fine against Andrade - I'm not saying Andrade is near the level of Calzaghe, but his style forced Kessler away from what you call his gameplan and Kessler adapted fine. Versus a fighter like Andrade you need good footwork and counterabilities - Kessler showed just that, where he versus Beyer/Lucas/Siaca showed little footwork as he controlled the fight from the distance/middle.
So there is no question he can adapt - if he can do it well enough to beat Calzaghe - well hoepfully time will tell.

No one has ever come this much forward against Kessler, as Andrade did it that fight. Still Kessler picked the pace - and showed his counterpunching abilities. As always he didnt do anything stupid - and never got lured into doing stupid things.
An almost flawless exihibition of true boxing skills. Only thing missing was more uppercuts.

Calzaghe's last five fights
Manfredo - stopped
Bika - all chin
Lacy - should've been stopped
Ashira - broken hand, still pitched a shutout
Veit - stopped
But hey, not worth arguing with you, you're trying to say Kessler adapted against Andrade, I didn't see him do anything different to the jab jab jab jab jab overhand right jab jab jab back up back up jab jab jab jab jab routine that he always does.I can only say this again - check out the stats of the fight and you will know that Kesslers powerpunches almost equalled the amount of jabs. And did so with 50% hit ratio.
But for arguements sake - how would you box a fighter that comes forward constantly for 12 rounds and has a chin of granite - while you, yourself has one of the best jabs combined with excellent footwork, while knowing the other guys only chance of winning is a punchers chance?

Bollocks to Amsterdam/Dane.
Calzaghe is already an ATG.
Calzaghe is already #1 CHAMP of the SMW.
Beating Kessler won't take him much further than he is because Kessler's competition there after is going to be limited to Froch, Bute, Inkin - unproven, unknown fighters..
Roy Jones Jr is the best that has ever been at 168 - Calzaghe is the best champion due to his reign and defenses, RJJ would've beat any version of Calzaghe.. that's a fact.
This fight is more about pay cheque and finality to the belts for Calzaghe - when he decimates Kessler in a lacklustre fare, he's still going to have to find a Taylor/B-Hop/Dawson fight to really cement himself as an ATG and have any chance at gaining ground on RJJ.
Well I guess the best career choice for Joe is to retire - undefeated. With Manfredo as his last fight - cementing his legacy....
WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Well if you can't see the difference in style between the Kessler that beat Andrade and the Kessler that beat say Beyer or Lucas, then there is no point arguing. Put just to point to the most obvious difference:
Versus Beyer/Lucas/Siaca Kessler was in control - he was the one making the fight - moving forward always had the right distance and in over all control. Pressure - half a step strait back and counter - much to that recepy.
Versus Andrade Kessler was physicly push back for most of the fight - and Kessler boxed classic counterboxing - circling the attacking Andrade and countering. and if you want a little inside fighting - toe-to-toe go see round 12.
Calzaghe last 12 fights:
Manfredo - stopped, but Manfredo was never hurt, so it was stopped not due to Calzaghe's power, but due to Manfredo's inactivity and a referee that stopped it early.
Bika - all chin - says who??? - Kessler had him down in sparring wearing big glows and headgear - Bika has a good chin, but he is stopable
Lacy - should've been stopped - no it shouldn't - if that had been the way to "judge" a fight then Ali would have lost to Big Georg...
Ashira - broken hand, still pitched a shutout - Ashira has a very shaky chin - should have been possible.
Veit - stopped - has a very bad chin!
Salem - W12 - by all accounts has a good chin although he was down versus Echols and Calzaghe and stopped by Bute.
I think Calzaghe has the power of his younger days, but I don't think his hands can deliever anymore - he broke his hands on both Ashira and Manfredo.
I think Calzaghe has a very good chance of beating Kessler, but I don't see it being on (T)KO.

- and body shots! At first I wanted to write that as well - but I have long ago come to the conclusion based on analysis from watching the fight multiple times - that body shots versus a forward launching unorthodox guy with very long reach would put Kessler at unnecessary risk - he even did it a few times - and got hit almost everytime in the process - while when not doing it - he almost never got hit. Still the head was wide open for bashing. The "sucker" just didn't wanna go down:lol:.
So my conclusion is - he did the right thing in that match - and hoped that Andrades chin wouldn't hold forever.

I think like other posters here that Kessler is in fact able to adjust his gameplan. Since he has world class straight punches there is not really any reason for him to neglect them. But Blocky here lets this to be Kesslers downfall and shortcomming. Calzaghe is definitly better than Kessler in some areas and vice versa.
One of the biggest questions IMO is what version of Calzaghe will show up on the fight night. I am sure that Kessler will be "there" while we are never really sure what version of Calzaghe we will see.
Unless it is the sharpest version of Calzaghe we will see, then this will be one sided for Kessler. But if it is the best of Calzaghe that comes, which I hope, then it will be very interesting.
Kessler so far only lost very few rounds in his career. I worry Calzaghe doesnt have the hands to KO Kessler anymore. If Calzaghe wins it will either be Kessler resigning on his chair or by a decission. But I can not really see it.
Kessler will not dominate as he has done so far, but he will win. 70 - 30 for Kessler.
