Hey, it’s been announced today Sentanta have lost the rights to one of the two Prem packages they’ve held for the past two seasons.
Any chance this money being freed up will be spent on acquiring more boxing fights in the future?
Or is this just hopeful wishing on my part?

I think we're witnessing the first signs of the rumoured financial problems Setanta have been suffering. Very unlikely this will have a positive impact on their boxing coverage.

Hopefully they will try and concentrate on on boxing, its cheaper. Hopefully........

I agree to an extent but if the people that only signed up for the football cancel their subscriptions it will, inevitably, have a further detrimental effect on the boxing coverage.

I think Bunceys £40million a year salary is the main reason Setanta is struggling.

They've paid out a shit load less this year for Prem games.

It's a case of whether the lower expenditure on footbal negates cancellations.

I hope so, so we'll see more boxing spending.

Apparently, it's not in Sky's interest to see Setanta go under - there can't be a Sky monopoly anymore (although the legal reasons for that I don't fully get), and a weak Setanta being bought out by ESPN would be a bigger threat to Sky in the long run.

Obviously, from my perspective I'd like to see Setanta let Sky have the lion's share of footy and tie up the majority of boxing rights as the trade off.

It's another example of the EU meddling way beyond rational reasoning. Apparently one company having a monopoly over premiership rights is unconstitutional. How the way British people watch football affects the rest of Europe I don't know.

the saturday evening games.

have they lost out on the odd monday night game for the next package then?

disappointed that sky got the lion's share again.

setanta have not lost the rights. sky can only show 4 packages, who has the other 2? the bidding is not due for months.

Fucking hell!!

Less football is definitely bad. Whether your a fan or not, that's where the money is to be made.

Big games = milllions of sponsorship money, it's as simple as that.

Football is still the cash cow, losing a chunk of this is definitely bad news for setanta.

To be honest I thought the only problem with that packaging system was that it didn't go far enough; if it was up to me, one of those packages would be open to terrestrial broadcasters only. Less money swimming around football wouldn't be a bad thing, imho, if it meant the public getting more access to games, like the old days.

That's what I thought but apparently shithouse Murdoch has secured 5 packages!

How is that right? Bending of the rules seems acceptible when there's money involved. I hate sky.

The problem is, that would mean the smaller clubs would get an even worse deal which would have a detrimental effect on the overall health of the game. The packages were open for bidding from anyone, ITV and the Beeb simply haven't the cash to pay for them.

This whole packaging concept has done nothing good for the fans either. Rather than it all being all on one subscription channel, it's now on two. Not what this poorly thought through stipulation was supposed to achieve.
