I have just come back from the physio for the second time in 2 and a half weeks to have my back loosened up. From around September I started getting pains in my knee whilst running then afterwards I'd be limping. I went to the doctors, they said I'd just over done it and strained my ligaments so I had a couple of weeks off running and replaced it with going on a cross trainer but the pains kept coming back. Then they started in my elbow whilst boxing, they got worse to the point where it would cause me a lot of pain, to throw a left hook on the pads, bag or sparring then just to throw anything. I ended up having 2 months off and seeing 4 different doctors as even when I was doing no training, throughout the day I would randomly get pains in my elbows and knees and would even start limping. I was referred to a physio but put on a 12 week waiting list so I went to one off my own back the other week.
The result was amazing, after some flexability tests he diagnosed me with a stiff back which caused my nerves to be tight, making me less flexable which was giving me all this trouble. I was ready to start training again the same day and he gave me some back stretches to do regulary to keep my old problem away. I went boxing training 5 times with no bother, went running 5 times for about half an hour at a time (but twice one day when I wernt boxing in the evening) plus I did weights a couple of times too.
I was getting zero of my old pains until my last run I could feel something in the outside of my knee again and then by the evening I was limping so I booked another appointment at the physio.
My back was about 50% as stiff as it was the first time I went in, it has been cracked and loosened up again, I'll go boxing tonight. I had gotten excited at being able to get fit again and got ahead of myself, overdoing it which I'll try not to do this time as I know it could come back but the phsyio said just tone it down a little and when I get some niggles, rest and maybe crack my back myself or get someone else to do it if I can but the good news is he said I will get over this problem and by April his estimation is I'll be totally fine. So I'll be carefrom from now and then, I'd been worried about how much problem this back was going to give me and put my training back.
The problem seems quite common, are there others here who have suffered similary? What did you do about it? How did recovery go and was you able to keep it away?
I have only been training intensly for about a year, the year before then I started getting fit and lost over 5 stone in about 2 years. The last year I often have been boxing 3 times a week and running 3-5 times, usually about 30 miles a week plus about an hour of weights 3 or 4 times a week but only that intensly for about 6 months altogether. I have not done weights more than once a week since last August/September and do not plan to go that over board again. I think I will box 3 times this week, I may just leave the running or do an hour on a cross trainer a couple of times, maybe a bit of weights too but I will not start running 5/6 days a week again for a good while now. Thanks for taking your time reading.

Boxers, and other athletes, can spend a lot of time seeing physiotherapists and chiropractors. Much of that can be preempted by proper stretching. Years ago Bob Anderson wrote a book on stretching. It is worth reading.

Cheers, before each and every boxing session we do an all over body stretch which takes 10-15 minutes, and a cool down, but I now have learnt to emphasize more on stretching in every kind of training i do.

It could just be the running. I'd take it easy on the running for about a month to see if those pains start to show up again.

You could try supplementing with Glucosamine Condroitin and some healthy oil, fish or flax to help supply your joints with water and naturally try to counter inflamation. But this isn't a miracle cure, it will only help so much.

Stretching and warming up CANNOT be over emphasized. It is imperative you start a stretching and warming up routine, or you just increase your chances for injury.
