In one corner, from Scotland, Ken Buchanan in the other, the pride of Youngstown Ohio, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. Scheduled for 15 rounds, who wins?

A rather pedestrian decision win for the Scot. Mancini may have been tough enough to go 15, but he simply wasn't in Buchanan's class.

I agree, and it has nothing to do with my being a Buchanan fan, but this would be a one sided unamimous 15 round decision for the Scot.

Buchanan, no doubt. Boom Boom was and is an admirable guy, but Ken ate up guys like Mancini as if they were haggis.

I always stick up for Ray here, but he loses this one. Horrible stylistic matchup, and Ken wasn't just a boxer; he was tough enough to back Manicini off when he had to. Buchanan by decision, or late stoppage on cuts.

That's a very good call. You remember Buchanan very accurately. He wasn't just a boxer, he had a hard edge to him and that's why I say that he was better than guys like Hector Camacho, and Meldrick Taylor, both of whom he would have beaten too.

Buchanan really was in a different class. It'd be a cracking fight, but the winner would never really be in doubt; Mancini might track Buchanan's jaw with a nice hook but then be caught by two or three in return and be put swiftly back in his place.

I'm going to be the desenter here, and I was a big Buchanan fan. Guts fought a little like Ray and Ken from what I read wasn't strong enough to hold him off. Mind you it was an older Ken, but I think Ray in his best bout would keep Kenny defensive minded enough to make it real close. Kenny by two or three rounds over 15.

Agreed, Taylor had no heart, which is why he fought his heart out and took numerous shots from Chavez all fight long and fought till the very end till he was basically brain-damaged. That guy had no heart at all.
I didn't say that Meldrick Taylor had no heart. He fought his heart out and swallowed a gallon of his own blood in the process. I also think it was criminally irresponsible for referee Richard Greene to stop that bout with only 2 seconds on the clock. Okay? What I said was that Ken Buchanan would beat fighters like Hector Camacho and Meldrick Taylor because he was an excellent boxer himself, plus he had a certain hard edge about him that was, along with his boxing skills, a something extra that would have enabled him to prevail against boxer types like the two I mentioned. Refence his two bouts with Ismael Laguna, who was a fast, skilled boxer himself, I'm sure you'd agree. He was good enough to defeat Carlos Ortiz and slice up Mando Ramos among others. Buchanan could handle guys like that, whereas, a Roberto Duran type of fighter was more difficult for him, and later, past his prime, Guts Ishimatsu. What I said had nothing to do with Meldrick's heart.

There is a difference between Guts and Ray... and that was that Guts was a VERY smart fighter. Similar type of styles, but Guts was much, much slicker in his approach.

Where Ray would have barrelled in, guns blazing, Guts would feint, back off, feint, then slide in out of nowhere with a scorcher combo. Much more disciplined.

Buchanan woulda ate Mancini up.

Its Richard Steele not Richard Greene. And he was the ref, not the timekeeper...

I knew who you were going to pick in this fight before I read your post, and same with "Louis v Ali" as well.

Buchanan UD Mancini (ca. 9-5-1)

Too much on everything for Ray IMO...

Mancini might rock him at some stage, though Buchanan would come back throwing more leather. Truth be told Buchanan is simply too good down the stretch and would eventually earn a clear UD.

Buchanan wins a UD. I also agree with the gentleman that would pick Buchanan over Meldrick Taylor, as Taylor would quite likely be the 'bull' for that fight and Buchanan had enough chin and sharp counters even for the lightning-fast Taylor.

I see Chavez winning in a 15-rounder, though.
