Javier Capetillo, trainer of Antonio Margarito, had his trainer’s license revoked after testifying at today’s California State Athletic Commission’s disciplinary hearing. Capetillo stated that he accidentally put illegal pads into Margarito’s hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley. “I committed a big mistake,” Capetillo said according to the LA Times. “I don’t want this young man to have problems. I’m here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake.”
———-
Earlier, CSAC Inspector Che Guevara testified that the pad inside Margarito’s hand wraps was “not hard as a rock, but firm and hard.” Inspector Mike Bray testified that there was “a white substance smeared across the pad, like a cast plaster.” The pads, confiscated by the commission before Margarito’s fight last month with Shane Mosley, are still being tested by the Commission. Margarito and Capetillo are currently on suspension pending the outcome of this case.
———-
Last week, Margarito’s previous opponent Miguel Cotto commented to Fightnews.com on Margarito’s current plight. “Margarito and his team are responsible for their acts,” said Cotto. “If they used the illegal handwraps or not was their decision. If it’s true they will have to face the consequences.”
to be honest this stinks of his trainer taking the rap for Margorito. theres no way margorito did not no this is going on, and i really dont think that this has not happened before.

Marg's aint banned or under suspension ? Hardly like his trainer made him or he happened to be looking the other way when he wrapped em. Then again if other fighters trainers never noticed, is there an excuse that Margs didnt/couldnt. I think its pish, surely he noticed when punching too.....then he could argue "sure i admit i felt something strange against Mosley" and even use as an excuse lol...Takes away from a great win for Mosley. Well, a great show from a great fighter.
The steroid talk coming with his win as Margs being caught up to no good totally blighted this fight also
"i commited this innocent mistake" :huh

The reaction to this has been completely hysterical....lets not get all general forum and start lynching people before all the evidence is in, no one seems to know what the "substance" actually was. I'm sorry, but "like a cast plaster" doesn't cut it.

Yeah true but with this supposed ban, surely something has been found ? It has been a good few days since the fight too and how long does it take to find out, given the stature and money involved in such an event.
I would love to think it was a case of something mistakenly there :thumbsup

There's no 'supposed ban'
It's actually happened. Margarito has had his Californian boxing licence revoked for at least a year as a result of irregularities with his hand wraps prior to the Sugar Shane fight.

It sounds like he could fight anywhere other than California...does anyone know what the substance actually was, not supposed to have been?
The guy just got banned. It's fair to assume the substance is not play dough.
Kick Margarito out of the sport.

only bad thing about the ban is Cotto won't get his revenge in the ring.... it would've been an interesting fight....instead we go can get mosley - cotto II which will be good

Its a total disgrace. Cotto was on track to become one of the greatest fighters of the modern era (he still is I suppose) but the loss to Marg will always be a taint on his record even though it looks as though he cheated. It could also affect Cotto mentally as the shots he took were unreal considering it was from a fighter with solid gloves. Hats off to Miguel for taking those shots as long as he did.

Does it really make a difference...
Not as if, Margo had steel knuckle dusters on.

Play dough would actually make more sense. Some people on these boards actually believe that the man went into battle with a plaster cast in his glove, the idea is so moronic its fucking laughable. If that was the case the first shot that he threw would be career ending for both the recipient and the person who threw it, his hand would be completely shattered.
Kick Margarito out of the sport.
I agree, but I suspect that this practice is much more widespread than people imagine, I find it telling that we haven't had an endless stream of fighters condemning Margaritos actions. Guilt perhaps? If you ban him then you have to ban all those who try to gain advantage by illegal means, and that would mean the man who AM was sharing a ring with the other night.

have you heard what margo sparring partners said about him in the buildup to mosley fight?
have you seen Nazim Richardsons version of events.....

Margo is guilty of very heinous crime

The guy who was watching the wrapping from the state board was totally clueless according to Nazim.
You mean the CSAC inspector is incompetent? Well, yes, I guess he should've seen it - but to be fair to the guy, it's not easy inspecting handwraps after you've been dead for over 40 years. (check his name ([Only registered and activated users can see links]))
Apart from that, looks like Margo's banned for at least a year - which seems like a fair judgement to me if it holds up on appeal. Even then, he might still be welcome in Mexico, but hopefully the fact that he was found guilty of loading his gloves will mean he'll get shunned by the big names in boxing for the rest of his career.

Antonio Margarito had 'firm and hard' bandage wrap, inspector testifies
10:06 AM, February 10, 2009
The state inspector who supervised Antonio Margarito's hand wrapping Jan. 24 at the Staples Center testified this morning that Margarito was found to have a suspect bandage wrap inside a knuckle pad that was to be placed atop both his fists before a title fight against Shane Mosley.
Inspector Che Guevara testified that in three years and 150 hand wraps he had never seen such a pad.
"It was sweat-soaked, thinner and harder in certain areas, not hard as a rock, but firm and hard," Guevara said, adding it had a stain "like old blood" on it. "It was not flexible. It was very firm."
The harder pad was first discovered, Guevara said, by Mosley's trainer Nazim Richardson, who oversaw the wrapping. Margarito's taped right hand was then unwrapped, where another harder insert was found. State commissioners felt the insert in a plastic bag today.
The other insert is in the hands of the state attorney general's office. The "foreign substance" on the insert has yet to be identified and won't be known until mid-March, a state official told the California State Athletic Commission at its disciplinary hearing for Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo.
The commission will weigh a possible license revocation for the fighter and trainer. More details to come on Fabulous Forum.

Sounds like we may be in that gray area in between loaded gloves and illegal wrapping material. Both are obviously against the rules but it certainly doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as the headlines would have you believe.

Margorito is scum and should be banned from the sport and jailed.
I am sickened that I used to laud this guys bravery in the ring and had respect for him....
He does seem like a dishonourable greaseball with hindsight.

All the time I was wowed by his destructive power and iron chin and watched a few fights of his.
The Cotto fight four times...
Just shit.

I read a quote of one saying he had been punched 50 million times, but he never felt the hurt like how he did with Margarito in sparring....his punches felt extra hard..... it is also reported that the same sparring partner broke his cheekbone and the doctor told him he may not be able to fight again..... This was the sparring before the mosley fight..... there must be an article somewhere online that should source these quotes..... try searching ggogle for "margarito Sparring mosley" perhaps...

Why would Margarito use "loaded gloves" (I hate that term) in sparring??....I wonder if he is going to put a claim in against AM, I bet he does. Been hit 50 million times, I would have thought that the world WW champion could afford better sparring than that :-(
