Hopkins fined $200,000!

Friday, August 17 2007

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has levied a whopping $200,000 fine against Bernard Hopkins for pushing Winky Wright in the face during their weigh-in the day before their July 21 clash at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. No one was injured in scuffle, which took place while the fighters faced off, but the Nevada commission wants to send a message of no tolerance for prefight fisticuffs and hammered "The Executioner" for 6% of his $3 million purse. After the fight Hopkins implied that the incident was a preplanned tactic to create more interest in the fight.

It was obviously staged, and notice he "pushed" his face. Generally in these things there is a punch involved. Certainly not worth 200k! Who gets that money?

That is ridiculous. 200K for an open handed push that wasn't even that hard? Wright was laughing when it happened. That seems way beyond the fines that have been levied before for similar incidents.

I'm curious about that, too. I remember both of them throwing punches, but I don't remember if either/both of them were fined.

ever notice how guys like bowe, judah do a lot of prefight bullshite whether it be cowardly king hits or mouthing off non stop.

but once they get in the ring they usually quit if the going gets too tough?

whereas you look at guys like kostya, or hatton prefight and they usually appear jolly or at least civil. but once in the ring they turn into killers and not afraid to mix it up.

i realise this is a rather broad generalisation, but i just find it funny when mayweathers and toney's say they are gonna go to war then they do the opposite.

that's why im excited about taylor/pavlik, kessler/cazalghe, maskaev/peter, pacman/barrera, holyfield/sultan all coming up. these guys might not deliver much entertainment prefight, but you know you'll get some sparks once the bell rings!

once again i know it's generalising a bit but seriously i've seen it a lot with defensive minded type fighters. they bark a lot before the fight then try their best to avoid trading once in the fight. maybe it's just my imagination LOL

That's gotta really hurt for a guy who claims he never tipped a waiter until after beating Trinidad.

If they really want to set a standard for behavior they'll dock Mayorga his entire paycheck for every fight.

You dont even get fines like that for seriously assaulting someone.

Only in america shit like this can happen...

I know , How much did Tyson get fined for attacking Lewis . Hopkins got screwed ! They just wanted his money . And that wasn't to hype the fight either . Hopkins just said that to make it look innocent so he wouldn't get fined . It wasn't staged either because Wink would never agree to get bitch slapped on television .

Tyson the poor bastard had to take a beating for free against lewis..

He knew starting a blue at the press conference wouldnt do shit to him as his whole 40million plus purse were going due to tax problems..

Bowe should have been fined for that. Great punches though! Never knew Donald had a legendary chin, but he certainly seemed to take those punches well! How would Lewis have taken those punches?

As for Hopkins being fined 200K - that figure is too high. Fine if the money goes to charity but, as we keep asking, where does it go?

Funniest thing is BHop shoved Winky to get more PPV buys (in turn more money in his pockets)... instead he loses money for it :yep

Hahaha I guess things don't cancel eachother out then huh

I like Hopkins but I'm glad he got fined. Intentional or not, that was a dick move.

When did Bowe ever quit? I was never a fan, but the guy stood in there and took his lumps even when Golota battered him in both of their fights.

That display at the Donald press conference was completely fucking classless though.

When tyson went chicken-shit ape-o on lewis, that was the announcement of the fight, not the weigh in the day b4 the fight. Hopkins put the main event in jeopardy by doing that. Even though it was a light push to the face, winky could have suffered some sort of sprain that could of forced him out of the fight. $200,000 is an excessive fine. I sure hope he can afford it.

I think he just said that so they would go easy on him ! He was pissed , I heard those guys talking trash about his mom on Youtube !\

I don't think they were talking trash about his mom. They just said something like that "hey Bernard you should have listen to you mother and stop fighting 3 years ago, you should have listen to you mother!" I don't look at it as a trash talking.

Anyway 200K is not much for b-hop (c mon guys! it's his poket change) but knowing him he's a one greedy fighter so i guess he isn't too happy about that.

$200,000 may sound a lot to our American friends, but to us Brits that works out to about a tenner in the current market! ;)

Even mentioning a guy's dead mother prior to a fight like that is disrespectful.

And I think some people are making a mistake when acting like 200K is not that big a deal to Bernard. Hop's purse for the Winky bout was 3 million. Taxes probably take about 50% of that. You subtract things like the trainer's fee, cornerman fees, training expenses, etc., and losing 200K on a BS fine for an openhanded push is not such a little thing, IMO.

It's great to have at least ONE edge over the Yanks, what with their $3.00 a gallon oil and cheap-as-chip's-arse food.

Anyway, this is a good move. It's a shame they can't fine Hopkins for his disgraceful performance in the ring as well as his shaming of the sport outside of it.
