Who's the best fighter/boxer you've ever met? For me, it almost pains me to say it because he's such a dick, but it's Pernell Whitaker.

Pernell was blowing everyone but the white girls in their 20's off. I wanted his autograph, so I held up the book and pen, and he brushed me aside. On his way back, I was annoyed, so I was more blatant and stood in the way, he looked me dead in the eye, put his hand on my shoulder and said "I'll be right back, buddy." I proceeded to see him drive off and that's the last I ever saw of him.
Larry is the type of person where you either like him or you don't. He's much nicer when the press isn't around. He gives fighters, even guys like Mike Tyson, a lot of credit when the press isn't around. One day I went to his restaurant and he recognized me, so he got up mid conversation, shook my hand, and introduced me to his youngest daughter and her fiance. He also gave me free BBQ wings. He didn't have to do that, he could have kept talking and ignored I was there.

John "Super D" Duplesis. I was thinking of working out at the same gym as he did in New Orleans in the early 90's & spoke to him briefly.
He became a top five(#4 ?) jr welterweight contender before he was stopped by Julio Ceaser Chavez in 4 rounds. Undercard of Tyson /Ruddock I

Tyson was cool but he always had a huge entourage and not much time. Ran into him twice pre-Ruddock II. In a more bizarre case, Ali ended up alone and a little disoriented in the parking lot of where I worked in Seattle, also early 90's. He was... well, he was fucking Muhammad Ali, bigger than life. I damn near shit myself once my boss told me who was outside.
On a more obscure note, John David Jackson seemed uniquely surprised I recognized him, even though he was wearing a t-shirt that said "John David Jackson - Middleweight World Champion".

I was about six or seven, hg. My dad took me to meet Dempsey at his restaurant in Manhattan. Jack, in a suit, was ramrod straight and strapping, graciously signing autographs close to the large picture window facing Broadway.
My dad brought me over to him. He bent down and challenged, "Put up your dukes!" Huge fists roiling in front of my eyes.
I jumped into a stance. He roared with laughter, scooped me up with one arm and ruffled my hair. Never forget that monument-of-a-face so close to mine.

Having someone on the board who met Dempsey seems so strange to me. Cool, but strange. I mean I know Dempsey lived into the 1980's and even I could have theoretically met him, albeit as a child, but still. It's like saying you met Abe Lincoln or something. He's a historical figure, not someone a guy can come up to you and say "Oh yeah I met him!"

I met Walcott several times as he was the New Jersey Boxing Commissioner for a while. His office use to call me up for information about former boxers. This was before the internet. I talked to him several times and he was always nice.
We even put up a monument of Walcott in Camden and I was asked to be the guest speaker. Now they want to move it to a better place. Last week I met with several people doing a documentary on Walcott and they interviewed me for the cameras.

I've been lucky enough to have grown up in the world of boxing and have had a drink with some of the great British boxers like Buchanan, Winstone, Minter, Stracey, Downes, Conteh. McGowan to name a few, Cooper, the list go's on.
As a young kid there was always boxing people about. Peter Kane and Larry Gains to name a couple.
Had a lovely afternoon a few years back with Dick McTaggert (Scotland and Britains greatest amateur boxer, Olympic gold and bronze medal winner and Val Barker winner for 1956) and a couple of mates of mine, both fighters, Flyweight Billy Walker and Carl Taylor both from the Sixties.
My ex boss was Johnny Pritchett, former British and Commonwealth Middleweight champ. I worked for him 15 years and still keep in touch with him over here in Spain where he's retired to.

As Bill said, celebrities don't have to act like that. They could easily ignore you or give you the brush off. It was a pleasure to meet Mr Eubank.

When I met Pep, he introduced me to his wife. I said, that's not your wife, as she was so young looking she actually looked more like his grand daughter or at least his young daughter. He laughed and said, why, you think she is too old for me. He was a real nice guy, as he continued to tell me some jokes and I didn't know when he was telling me the truth or just joking around.
By the time he married his present wife, Barbara, in 1987, he had been through five marriages. "All my wives were great housekeepers," he used to say. "After every divorce, they kept the house."
