18-0!
British 140lb champ!
Wins over Lynes, Wright and Bazan!
Fighting Barry Morrison next!

Don't think I know him and I don't think I was aware of any of the above.

What do you people know and why isn't he being mentioned?

Does anyone think he could be world class?

Smith

He's pretty damn good.

If I remember rightly TFFP is a big fan of his potential.

Yes I like him a lot. Still some way to go before I declare him world class, but I think he's got the ability. He already seems beyond the weak European level in this weight class, he beat Lynes very convincingly forcing him to quit, and we saw how Lynes faired with Branco.

There are a lot of his fights on YouTube, all good performances except the one against Wright which was scrappy stuff on the inside.

Worth watching, his style is...interesting

Why Morrison next - surely that is a step backwards?

Then again I doubt people will be in a rush to fight him.

Watching him on youtube. Doesn't look like the next Calzaghe yet but he looks like a reasonably fast, skilled southpaw. He's doing well.

Followed him for the last 2-3 years, before he made it big with his recent win or 2

Tricky southpaw, bit like a Vic Darchinyan less the power. Chin is untested as of yet.. Throws a wide variety of shots more every angle you can think of, very fast and his defense is based on making the opponent miss with head movement as he likes to carry his hands low and then counter when they miss. His stance alone is great to watch, fights with his legs vey far apart. A nightmare for anyone who wants to outbox him.

Power may be an issue on a world class level to be honest and their are still many unknown factors up for debate, like how he rides a punch.

Him and Lee are Irelands best prospects, in that order

Lynes was beating him early on quite handily but his boxing caved in and he started getting tagged. McClosky is clearly a good fighter but Barrys got a chance in this one.

Lynes had a couple of good rounds early on.

We could easily say McCloskey figured him out and then dished out an ass whoopin'. That's what it appeared like.

Yep.... Those first two were pretty worrying. Initially I watched the first two then fast forward to the suprise ending... He falls into the unimpressive to watch, very effective category.

barnes is banned..........dawes is contracted to an english title........lynes he beat........not sure about the others but thats 3 top names that would have been in the mix

barry is fit and ready for the fight, and he certainly is no step backwards

p.s gilmour had choices on mccloskey after the lynes fight

Beeston Brawler

I suppose Morrison is the best choice...... Daws would be an even bigger step backwards.

mccloskey is very unorthodox but i like his style . hes been fighting in ireland the last couple of years thats why you wouldnt have heard of him in england but i think he can go onto world level . i mean if gavin rees can pick up a title i think mccloskey will . i think he would beat kotelnek no problem and possibly bradley and urango . hopefully fights branco after morrison for the european belt

I didnt think Lynes won a round. The commentators only started commenting on McCloskeys work after they realised that Lynes was being hammered.

What I like about McCloskey is that hes a boxer but NOT a runner, therefore Barry will get opportunities to land on him. & when Barry lands, he hurts.
Im well happy about this fight, cos I think although McCloskey looks to be the real deal, hes going to get tagged by Barry Morrison at one point, & then lets see what hes got.

As the Jeffro said before me, the Lynes-McCloskey fight was interesting. & if you are a Morrison fan, the second round is a must see.

Barry can pull this one off if hes up for it, I have no doubt.

I like Paul McCloskey from the little I have seen of him. I was very impressed with the manner by which he dealt with Lynes though cannot say I was particularly surprised though. Barry Morrison as we all know is a game lad in attitude and spirit. I have a lot of time for Bazza. After this fight we will know more about McCloskey. Down the line very interesting possibilities as we may defend the world title against after we win it this year. At the moment all our attention is on Scott Haywood for the Commonwealth title defence.

My cousin "Mick Stanton" is meant to be on the undercard to this.

Bad match up for McCloskey I feel though, he's beyond Morrison surely?

Beeston Brawler

Is that on the basis that he beat Lynes who beat Morrison?

There is a lack of suitable opponents for him I guess... though I do agree it is a bit of a backward step.

Rees seems to have disappeared, Witter won't want to go back to British title level.

Pretty much.

If I remember rightly too, Barnes didnt have the toughest of nights with Morrison and McCloskey and Barnes' styles are comparable. Granted this is a style point rather than a calibre point.

Good shout though BB, I suppose there is a lack of opposition in the alternative.

Can someone explain why this guy turned pro so late. He's damn near 30, yet only has 18 fights and is still fighting for domestic belts.

I've never seen him get tagged with a big punch,he's either hit with a glancing blow or he's moving backwards when hit.His unorthodox style makes him very difficult to hit cleanly.I hope he has a good chin, if so he will be very difficult to beat

extensive amateur background, lots of irish titles but just didnt have the style that could be translated into olympic level amateurs, decided to give it a go at pro when the scene was not near as big as it is now in ireland and he has fluorished with his counterpunching style, ive watched most of the mccloskey fights and his worst performance is the wright one and i feel that was more experimental.

he was caught big by lynes in the second round and with his style hes gona get caught at the top level, but so far he has shown very good recovery powers.

im sorry i like barry morrison, but he isnt on the same level as paul and in all likelihood it will be a wide UD.

Hi BigReg

I've no idea why he took so long, the Irish posters would know. But he hasn't been wasting too much time by British standards, his resume isn't too bad in such a short time. He even took his British title fight as a very late replacement, so he shows signs of taking any opportunity if he gets the chance.

Why the interest?

He didn't have an IBF top 15 rating(nor does he currently), and the IBF have both an International and Inter-Continental belt with the Inter-Continental being more important. IBF International fighters are actually rarely in the top 15.

With all due respect to Barry Morrison, who I do like I think Paul will be all wrong for him and I think this could be quite an easy win for McCloskey. Morrison struggles against fighters with good laterally movement who are prepared to counter.
If Morrison is to have a chance he'll have to do what Wright did and force it into a war.

The problem with that is McCloskey only had a tear up with right because one of his eyes closed after a headbutt and he hadn't the vision to do what he normally does. Another problem with that is McCloskey was still too good for Wright(although it was a close fight,96-94/97-93 stuff) even when that did happen.

What's interesting is the winner of the Olusegun-Haywood fight becomes the mandatory for the winner of this one.

It's crazy to think that Ring magazine bradished McCloskey the most protected fighter in boxing around the time of the Bazan fight. He wasn't even that protected then(for a fighter of his experience) and now he's just making those claims seem ridiculous.

TFFP
02-18-2009, 05:47 AM
If he was protected he wouldn't take a British title shot on short notice, he'd bide his time. That speaks volumes for his confidence.

It will be fantastic if the winner of this meets...Olusegun.

Interestingly I think the BBB of C have said the winner of this fight should fight the winner of Ajose versus Haywood. The problem is that we have the final eliminator with Witter for the WBC title so if all goes to plan it might be impossible to fit this in unless we end defending the world title against McCloskey or Morrisson.
