Bernard Hopkins is a fucking legend.

Bernard Hopkins is a fucking legend.

Saturday night I was in lovely Birmingham, England and after an exciting night of UFC fights I found myself back in my hotel - jet lagged, time-zone bewildered and hopped up on the devil’s cabbage.

I had just seen 11 great mixed martial arts bouts, but there was still one fight later that evening that I was looking forward to, a boxing match between Bernard Hopkins and Kelly Pavlik.

Bernard, the ultra crafty veteran at 40-fucking-3 years old -which is like 80 in boxing years - was taking on the young, white knockout artist that’s one of those mentally tough, hard workers you can’t help but root for. It was an awesome match up.

Thanks to the almost inconceivable ideas and work of people thousands of times smarter than me, they now have technology where I can watch shit saved on my DVR at home through the internet when I’m on the road.
Just talking about it gives me a big, fat, geek boner.

I fired up the laptop, and through it’s 15-inch screen I witnessed a pugilistic masterpiece.

Bernard Hopkins, showing incredible discipline and poise artfully out moved and out boxed the younger man, pitching a virtual shut out. It was one of the most beautiful displays of technical boxing and strategy that I’ve ever seen in a lifetime of watching the sport. For 12 rounds against one of the most dangerous young guns in boxing he used perfect defensive movement setting up precision attacks and counter attacks while taking very little punishment. It was a god damned, motherfucking work of art.

I think there’s a misconception that because I do commentary for the Ultimate Fighting Championship - and because of this goofy UFC vs Boxing argument that I got in with Lou Dibella on ESPN - that I’m not a fan of boxing. That couldn’t be more untrue.

I’ve always been a huge boxing fan, and in fact besides Mixed Martial Arts it’s the only sport I watch.

I’m also a huge fan of discipline and focus, and Bernard Hopkins has those qualities in levels that most other fighters can only dream of. I feed off the accomplishments of others. They inspire me, and they motivate me to push for more in my own life, and I feel like watching that fight has given me a fresh jolt of energy. He’s such a bad motherfucker that just watching him has raised my whole game.

One of the things I appreciate about his style the most is that he takes very little damage. I’ve never even seen him get hurt.

Some people have called him boring for it, but for me it’s not boring at all.
It’s just intelligent. If you know how hard it is to do what he does only then can you really appreciate the level artistry and discipline involved in such a performance.

The name of the game is to take as little punishment as possible while dishing out as much as possible, and no ones does it better than Hopkins did Saturday night.

At 43 years old he turned in one of the finest performances of his career - matched perhaps only by his artful destruction of Felix Trinidad.

I just watched it again on the big screen, and it was even better the second time around.

If you’re a fan of the sport you owe it to yourself to catch the replay when it airs on HBO.

I think once you see it you’ll likely agree that fight goes down in history as one of the greatest performances ever. Intelligence, skill, experience and execution all on display at humbling levels by a 43 year old man defying time by remaining at the top of the heap in one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

It’s the stuff of legends, and just watching it will make you better at everything you do.

skip to 2:00 mins, he comments on what if Chuck Norris and Boxers had done mma.

I'd like to see what Beeps has to say about this.

Nice words by Rogan!

I dont understand how you can be a fan of one sport but not the other.

I definetly don't understand why some MMA fans' don't like boxing.

I bet Rogan shot his load when Shane KTFO Tony. :good

I think Joe hit it right on the head. I felt the performance was materful myself and yea...he got a little "mushy" but fight fans...boxing or MMA are some of the most passionate fans on earth. When I watch a good fight like the Bhop vs Pav fight it gives me chills myself. So while he did sound like he was nut hugging a bit I relate and understand that it wasn't just about a particular guy...it was more about what the sport as a whole is all about. Its not often you see a TRULY great and artistic performance in any profession...when you get the chance to witness it you never forget it.

He seems like a real cool cat...just a regular "Joe"....Pun intended :yep But he'd be the kind of person you'd have a good debate with over too many drinks that ended up in a fist fight....then back to being cool again.

Why does Rogan get so much hate? He always killed when he was on the howard stern show and he's always 100 percent honest.

I think he is pretty spot on; Norris was a pretty proven combat athlete, and since he has since trained under the Machado's in BJJ up to a brown belt I htink, it isn't hard to see him developing into a passable MMA fighter.

The Machado's on Walker Texas Ranger

You won't find many guys that train BJJ getting a big head. Getting choked out many, many times - often by much smaller guys - keeps you pretty grounded lol...

I got a friend named Jeff Glover I used to train with when he weighed 130 lbs, he's bulked up to 150 now. He was a bjj black belt at 130, an EXTREMELY difficult achievement. He could tell you before you started rolling exactly how he was going to make you tap out.

"I'm going to take your right arm inside 90 seconds, and there's nothing you can do about it."

and then he would do it. It's an amazingly effective way to fight.

I'd put the house on Rogan. He's a very experienced grappler.

While I'm not a huge fan of his comedy per se, I really respect Rogan because he's an honest guy who calls out joke thieves when he sees them. He also doesn't by into the whole "boxing or mma" stuff. There's nothing at all wrong with liking both, and I really don't see how if you're a true fan of one you can help but be a fan of the other.

Rogan is right on the money. Stop being haters guys. The man loves the fighting arts and expresses himself intelligently about both.

dibella started off that whole argument by saying he has no repsect for the likes of whitaker and pep just after rogan had said how he loves the sport and those defensive fighters, retard

No doubt! BJJ is a great discipline to get under your belt. If you want to be even "decent" at it you have to give it your all. It, to me is a lot like boxing....anyone can box but to actually be GOOD or GREAT takes a specail kind of person.....Sounds like Jeff was dedicated and put a great deal of time in to learning BJJ. I've trained in BJJ for a little over a year out of HS but I didn't have the dedication that was necessary to learn BJJ in the way I truly wanted...so I enjoy watching it from athletes who are truly emersed in BJJ.

I agree! For me both take some much disipline and commitment that you have to respect the fighters and athletes who make this their living. Plus as fans we get to enjoy the "one on one" aspect of pure competition. You have to love both for different reasons. I'm a die hard boxing fan but I grew up with MMA....I stared out in Martial arts in at the age of 4 yrs old. I perfer boxing but appreciate both. I'm not sure why some fans of MMA and some fans of Boxing can't respect or appreciate both....like it's wrong to like both. Honestly its those kinds of peoples LOSS b/c there are incredible fights in both sports.
