He doesn't seem to get a lot of mention around here. Why, exactly?

Was he good enough to warrant it?

He seemed to have a thing for reversing close calls and losses...

I think he gets mentioned far too little. He's an amazing fighter and should be mentioned alongside Sanchez and co IMO.

That highly huh...

Why do you think so, personally?

From 1979 to 1990 he had but one single lone loss, to Salvador Sanchez when he had just 13 fights under his belt. He gave Sal the fight of his life. His next loss was all the way up at 135 to a great Pernell Whitaker. He was 32 by then. After that he beat Jeff fenech convincingly after getting a woeful decision win in the first outing. He also beat another great, Wilfredo Gomez. 11 years undefeated, 6 defences of the Feather title, 10 defenses of the super lightweight title, then a hit and miss finish at the age of 37. Unbelievable fighter, he should figure a lot better in the P4P rankings but for some reason seems a bit unpopular or unfashionable.

"The Professor" was probably my favorite active fighter in the late 80's-early 90's. Such a learned professional. Good at setting traps, excellent at pulling opponents out of their game plan, though later in his career he seemed to make a habit of trying to beat them at their own game, resulting in a lot of what I thought were unnecessarily close calls. Could just have been age catching up with him I suppose, but he certainly aged gracefully. He was still a force in the 130 pound ranks at the age of forty.

Also, when's the last time you saw such a great fighter with a mere 27" reach!

Interesting.

I've always thought Nelson gets mentioned plenty, given too much praise by many and his poor performances overlooked.

He was still an excellent fighter no doubt.I'm more impressed by his longevity than i am his peak fighting ability...he was a jack of all trades master of none imo.

Carlos Monzon might be similar. Both however got the job done, and in Azumah's poor performances he still come thru, realistically excepting Fenech.

No doubt.

I recognise i'm in the minority regarding Nelson, he just never really had that big an impact on me.

He didn't have that aura of invincibility or terrific basic skills that a Monzon had.Not that there's any shame in that.

If we subscribe to the view that first impressions are lasting impressions, then the first impression we had of Azumah Nelson was that he got lucky in challenging Sanchez on a bad night for Sal, and still couldn't last the distance. (If you recall, the story of that match prior to Sal's tragic end was about how he didn't feel good during it, and was told by his corner to just take it easy, so he did. In the wake of that revelation, Azumah's reputation suffered more.)

Finally, that was Nelson's only opportunity to establish his championship round credentials, and he failed. He was subsequently regarded as one of the first beneficiaries of the effete 12 round distance (along with Rosario). Sal, of course, was one of the last great 15 round champions, and took that title from another great 15 round champion in Danny Lopez.

Athough I was devastated at Sal's passing, I'm glad he never defended his title in a 12 rounder. That boy was far too much man to be restricted by a distance for pussies.

Duodenum you really are a 15 round hardliner aren't you. I think its a shame you don't watch boxing nowadays because of it though, you really have to see Floyd Mayweather jr IMO one of the best fighters to grace this earth. His training is amazing and the way he fights is magnificent. Great fighter

Is there a match of his in particular you would like me to check out?

Well theres a big list, but his best performance to watch would be the Diego Corrales fight, I'll upload it for you if you want a copy its really clear too. In that fight you'll see why he is regarded as the pound for pound best boxer in the world. Other good fights to watch of his include Mayweather vs Ndou, Gatti, Chavez, Judah and De La Hoya. Those are his most entertaining fights.

Also, there shouldn't be any doubt about how Mayweather would do in a 15 rounder. He is never tired in the ring and I have no doubt that he could do 15 rounds without a problem.
