View Full Version : Fighters that are complete bastards...

And why.
Whether it's being dirty to the point of seriously injuring their opponent, or for what they've done outside the ring, like the sick fuck that was Tony Ayala jr.
I've just always found this side of certain boxers interesting, for some reason.
Ron Lyle was inolved in/at the very least in the proximity of two people dying
over the course of his life.
Nigel Benn was a serial rabbit puncher, as seen about 250 times in the McClellan fight. Pretty dirty fighter and not adverse to breaking people down in the ring, soemtimes for good.
Monzon goes without saying.
Muhammed Ali, as Holmes has claimed, fuck a snake if you held it down for him. That kind of thing supposedly went on pretty heavily in his training camps. More than likely the reason he was divorced and remarried so many times. Hell, that isn't even Holmes speculating... McIlvanney mentioned this in an article he wrote int he 70's.
Not to mention Ali torturing more than a few guys in the ring for pretty petty reasons. And making Frazier bitter for life after Frazier more or less campaigned for Ali to get back into boxing, even helping him money wise.
Gerald McClellan was involved in dog fighting, or so the rumor goes. Vick style.
What've you got?

Sugar Ray Robinson: his last wife should have tortured him with blowtorch & pliers on the patella everyday, Marcellus Wallace style. Because the frequent & brutal beatings he gave his second wife, she had 5 miscarriages. Sad part is, she still loved him and tried to see him when he was sick towards last days of his life but luckily his third wife manipulated him with medications and even stopped him from attending his mother's funeral!

you're obviously sarcastic. yes he did. he brutally & frequently beat all of his wives. he also cheated on them frequently and for doing nothing they got beatdowns so if they protested it was worse. he makes mike tyson look like richard gere's character from dr t & the women (gere plays a guy who showered his wife with so much love that she went insane).

and son. Ray was an asshole outside the ring, he constantly accused his wife of infedility and then beat her for it whilst he himself slept around.

Ray Robinson was indeed a total prick, from absolutely everything I've read. Basilio tells about one of his motivations for beating him, when he tried to introduce himself to Ray some time before they fought, and Robinson laughed at him and blew him off as if he was nothing. Carmen hated him from that day on, and wanted to cave his ribs in when they fought.

I've heard stories that George Foreman is really a prick underneath his smiling, jovial personality. I actually met George once at a shopping mall where he was hawking his grilling machines. He seemed nice enough, but you could definately tell he was interested in making sales and making money.

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter; big fan of the man as a fighter, but outside of the ring I believe he was a truly evil person who happened to get away with triple murder. Cal Deal's Graphic Witness web page is very insightful on this: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

Thats true, 20 years isn't enough. I was just disputing that he 'got away with it'. Hmm I did just watch that video, seems like pretty solid evidence to convict him with. Do you know what the prosecutors said his motive was?

Bernard Hopkins.
He had agreed to sign a pair of gloves for a member of Ring Magazine to be auctioned off to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. When he lost to Taylor, he tried to lobby Ring Magazine into withholding recognition of Jermain Taylor as the middleweight champion. The Ring refused, so when Hopkins was asked to sign the gloves, he said "Fuck the American Cancer Society. Get Jermain Taylor to sign them."
Interestingly enough, when Jermain found out about this, he graciously donated a pair of signed gloves to the auction, along with a set of autographed trunks.

Mike Tyson. Here's what I think of him:
He's a fucking ass hole. He beat old women in elevators, he beat Robin Givens (before she deserved it). He's a rapist. He's a total prick out and inside of the ring. He was disrespectful too. When Larry first met Tyson he went to shake his hand, and Tyson refused, initating Larry's dislike for Tyson. Larry asked him why not, and Tyson said "Because I don't fucking feel like it". Well do you think the president fucking feels like kissing every baby's head he see's, or shaking thousands of people's hands at a time? What he said before fights such as "I'll fuck you till you love me" or "I'll eat your childrens hearts out" he should have been shot in the head on spot. Fucking son of a bitch. He was a dirty fighter too. Hitting after the bell and on break. Hitting people when they were down. Elbowing them, head butting them. Then when he bit Holyfield, he took it to a whole new level. Anyone else would have just hit Holyfield low real good, or just beat the shit out of him after the round. But not Tyson. He couldn't contain his big ass hunger for human ear. He's cussed out many reporters, asked a reporter if she wanted to fornicate with him :barf, and he is a fucking liar and hypocrit. He said he would never party or get drunk and do drugs again. 1 month later he is arrested and convicted for DUI and possesion of cocain. Fucking dip shit. Well, thats part of my rant, and if I feel like, I'll post the rest.

I've heard the story too. It was on one of those documentaries about Tyson. Tyson offered to carry the groceries of some old lady, got into an elevetator with her, beat her up and robbed her...something like that. This was when Tyson was still a teenager, before he had met Cus D'Amato (I think).

He hardly qualifies as a 'complete bastard', a man who devoted much of his time to God and is liked by almost everyone who met him (apart from jealous, classless buffoons like Larry Holmes). Even Ali said, in 1975, that he didn't understand why Foreman acts all broody and mean and doesn't speak to the press when he's a nice guy underneath.

Newspapers tend to have agenda's one way or another. Just because Carter was not the nicest person in the world, indeed he comes across as a 'complete bastard' sometimes, does not mean he should be stiched up for murder.
The documents and evidence in the case were not enough to convict Carter, at least not in Britain.

Of course, every bit of press concerning the Carter case seemed to have an agenda, every document in the case had an agenda, anyone who knows the story has their own spin on it. But what is true, is the conviction was unsafe, (hence the retrial) and the conviction would of been less likely to of happened in other States and countries.

Carter was no Saint, but the evidence suggests he should be given the benefit of any doubt over the murder of James Oliver, William Marins and Hazel Tanis.
Indeed the Oliver, Marins and Tanis families all deserved better and at the very least deserved justice on the two people who destroyed their familes.

Carter's car was identified as the car of the two shooters. There was ammunition found inside the car that corresponded with the assailants weapons. Both Carter and Artis had conflicting alibis, and four of their alibi witnesses would later go on to admit they were lying. Carter and Artis themselves fail their lie detector tests. William Marins, the only survivor of the shooting, was positive that the two gunmen were Carter and Artis. They were convicted by two separate juries. These are facts that bullshit movies like the “Hurricane” conveniently happened to leave out.
The truth is, Carter was a vengeful and often violent person; as he told the Saturday Evening Post in ’64, "If you mess with me, I'm going to try to kill you”.

My favorite fighter, Carlos Monzon, was, in his personal life a complete monster. He was able to control himself in the ring, he was so cold and calculating, and was actually a relatively clean fighter, inasfar as sportsmanship was concerned. For example, he stepped back at one point in his fight with Tony Licata, when Tony stumbled against the ropes and lost his balance for a second, and actually touched gloves before resuming the fight. So patient and calculating in the ring, and an out of control monster out of the ring. He made other bad boys like Duran seem harmless by comparison. I've never thought that an athlete should be judged by how he leads his life outside of his sport, and although he was a total bastard outside of the ring, Monzon was, in my opinion, among the very best of the elite class of boxing.

John L. Sullivan. No explanation needed.
For acting like a normal man of his era?

I am sorry but even if Sullivan had been a model of modern political corectness he would still have been a verry flawed man.

More boxers are bastards than not, unfortunately. Beating up your wife seems to be the standard. Pulling a Leonard smile on your face and being charismatic doesn't stop your from being a bastard.

II was about to say I hear Ray Leonard isn't too nice of a guy. Blows his fans off, etc. That's his choice.

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter; big fan of the man as a fighter, but outside of the ring I believe he was a truly evil person who happened to get away with triple murder. Cal Deal's Graphic Witness web page is very insightful on this: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
Carter came to the U K to fight Harry Scott ,in a fight promoted by Mickey Duff.Duff ,met him at the airport,Carter handed, Duff, one of his bags ,they cam e through customs, later,in the hotel room as Carter unpacked ,Duff spotted a handgun in Carters bag,he remonstrated with Carter, telling him it was a serious crime to bring a handgun into the UK,Carter calmly replied,"I didnt bring it in ,you did",this story is in Duff,s autobiography ,"Twenty and Out", an entertaining read.

Meaness is accepted in Boxing, as a matter of fact it is an admired quality. Lyle was a guy who did heavy time, got stabbed and almost died in prison and he had a dark side, the fight was proberly over some punk who was his bitch and someone elses too, Lyle was a jail bully,Hurricane Carter was raised in reformitorys and did a lot of time, had a bad start but stayed a criminal(thug) and do you think the cops framed him,Bob Dylan did. Tony Ayala was a sick guy, I admired his killer instinct and come of the floor attitude in the ring but he had a dark, dark side outside the ring and wanted to hurt woman, a punk at heart.Tyson had a bad disrepect for woman but was dumb with broads and drugs. Stanley Ketchel was killed messin around with the wife of another man, Ketchel was real good with his hands so the guy used an equalizer and Stanley was done. Liston was close to Frankie Carbo (they say) but Sonny also liked Heroin and used it all his life. Pinklon Thomas was a Junkie, got himself off it for a while but then went back on it before the Berbick fight, shame on Pinklon. Frankie Depaula got shot and left in the streets, people say it was because he was a snitch (rumours?)Emile Griffith was always in gay clubs dressed like a woman and liked young men, his mother was manly looking looked like Sam Peter but Griff was a tough fag. Jerry Quarry, Gerry Cooney, liked there booze and would be seen in bars pretty drunk, but Gerry frquented the bathroom a lot for a sniff of cocaine and Jerry Quarry admitted he added Coke to drinking before the Norton fight instead of training, Panama Lewis the trainer, gave coke to Pryor(black bottle in the Alex Aguello fight and took the stuffing out of Louie Resto gloves before his fight with Collins (the loss caused Collins to drink and drive and he was killed because of the depressed drinking and driving. Rocky Graziano and Jake Lamotta were in Reform school as kids together(must have been a rough school) but they changed for the better(Rocky found a nice jewish wife but Jake was in the darker shaddows longer ( Jake was disliked by the Mob early in his career until he let Billy Fox beat him along the ropes, then he got a title shot. there were others like Ricky Womack,Cliff Etiene,Irish Bob Murphy, but there were also a lot of guys that used the ring to get them out of bad neiborhoods and rough starts to make something of themselfs, a lot more of those storys than the bad ones, Boxing helped give many a big jump start that life otherwise would have not.

Who's this guy?
Luis Resto fought Billy Collins on the undercard of Roberto Duran-Davey Moore. Resto's trainer, Panama "Waste of Human Life" Lewis, removed padding from Resto's gloves. There's been speculation that some New York drug dealers put a lot of money on the underdog Resto and wanted some insurance. Resto gave Collins a terrible beating, ending his career. Collins suffered partial blindness, depression, and later got drunk and drove his car in a ditch in what may have been suicide.
