It's really too hard to narrow it down to one, or just a few.

Foster, Joe Frazier, Ray Robinson, Jack Dempsey, Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Ruben Olivares...all had killer left hooks.

Julio Cesar Chavez's left hook to the body was killer.

OMG how can't you add Roy Jones in there? WTF! He had a left hook that only Ray Robinson could match.

Tyson, Frazier, Cooney, Morrison, Chavez, Pipino Cuevas, Tua---no particular order but those guys could stop a fight with one hook.

Roy had a weird Left Hook almost a left hook/uppercut. It was great when he used to lead/leap with it.

Good mention, I forgot about him.

Ray Mercer - he of the iron chin - said that Morrison hit him "like he had never been hit before." And Tommy's biggest punch was, of course, the left hook. In terms of raw power it is probably right up there with Tua, IMO.

I think Frazier's was the best

In my lifetime, I've got to go with Morrison. That left hook is really what made him so dangerous fight in and fight out. All the other names mentioned are worthy choices as well.

I'm suprised that at glancing at peoples lists, Evander Holyfield is only mentioned in one of them.

No mention of Cotto for active fighters?

Equally effective to the head or body - Powerful, fast, sharp and technically brilliant. Not to mention impeccably timed. Better than Oscars in my opinion.

All-time, Dempsey, Robinson, Frazier, and Tyson come to mind.

If we're naming fighters after their best attributes, then surely Lacy has been renamed to Jeff "Take a big fucken beating" Lacy after the Calzaghe fight.

We could literally go on all day about all time hooks first name that came to mind when I read the thread title was pipino cuevas but a lot of the other guys mentioned are excellent choices also.

Out of active guys I'd go with DLH, Juarez (when he can land it), Wlad (when he does that sneaky little turing the jab into a hook thing), And Cotto and Hatton to the body.

Micky Ward built an entire career on a left hook.

Definitely deserves a mention for having a punch so good in comparison to the rest of his overall game. Of course his career wasn't just the left hook, you're leaving out his heart and balls.

Do you notice that there is two kind of great left hooks(head shot/excl RJJ and Wlad) Like with Frazier/tito/morrison. They had the same high from the shoulder left hook. SRR/ODH and everybody else kind of threw it effortlessly from a lower guard.

08-19-2007, 01:41 PM
Tua has the high shoulder hook too.

Ali's hook was underrated. It was a wide, sweeping thing he throw, often as a sorta hook/uppercut against short opponents like Frazier or taller guys when they tried to duck low. Not a lot of power in it but he could dribble it off the guy's noggin' like a basketball, with cumulative effect.

Smoking Joe. To win the heavyweight title and be the first man to beat Ali should give testimony to his left. It was the only thing he really threw effectively.

Your're right but now that I thikn about it looking at your avatar I'm surprised no one has mentioned Chico. He had a very good left hook and he could throw it well on the inside or from the outside.

Marciano didnt have the greatest of all-time but the one he hit Louis with was devastating. Also the triple left hook against Harry "kid" Matthews where he falls and hits his head on the turnbuckle was pretty sick :good

Frazier, Tyson, Louis, Tua seem like tops amongst hws all-time. Currently, Wlad has a awesome lead left hook and hooks off the jab better than anyone today (quick and powerful). Sam Peter's is really powerful and impactful when he's not hitting people in the back of the head :yep
