View Full Version : Broken Bones In The Ring

One of the most terrifying and awe inducing feats in a boxing ring, from my viewpoint. A man with gloves meant to protect both fighters to a degree not only tearing up flesh but transcending that and smashing bone. Speaks volumes about how powerful some of these men are.

Jeff Sims hit Tyrell Biggs so hard he broke his collarbone in the second round of their fight.

Pele Reid (Who knocked out Vitali Klitschko as a kickboxer) knocked a opponents arm out of it's socket with a punch.

Pipino Cuevas left a trail of battered and bruised fighters defending his title, many with broken bones.

Bert Cooper broke Ray Mercer's iron cast jaw.

Hmm, what others...

Courage Tshabalala broke Oleg Maskaev's ribs with punches. Maskaev may have had a fragile chin but his body was as tough as any I've ever seen on a fighter. Courage landed some of the hardest bodyshots a heavyweights ever thrown to the body, jabs that literally pushed Oleg backwards across the ring.

Ken Norton with Ali's jaw, obviously.

Ricky Hatton broke four of Castillo's ribs with a bodyshot, the only time Castillo was ever down in the ring.

John L Sullivan broke facial bones in a number of his oponents including Woods, Kilrain, Scannell, Laflin, and Ryan .

Jim Jeffries broke oponents ribs in at least five different fights.

Jess Willard broke Bull Youngs neck with an uppercut.

Jack Dempsey broke just about everything he hit even when he was wearing 16 oz sparing gloves. The list is too long.

Joe Louis broke two of Max Schmelings vertebra driving part of one of them into his kidney. Schmeling also sustained a couple of broken ribs in the same fight.

George Chuvalo still has steel plates in his face from where Joe Frazier hit him.

We all know about the legendary left hook with which Jack Dempsey samshed Jess Willards maxillary bone and Mike Tyson proved that the art had not been lost against Andrew Golotta.

Why people willingly got into the ring with any of these guys is hard to fathom.

Aside from Willard and Brennan who elses bones did he break? I heard he broke one of Godfrey's ribs in sparring, true?

I have been unable to establish whether the Godfreys ribs story was true or not. I do know that Dempsey did nasty things to some sparring partners.

Burke spent the rest of his life with a fist sized depresion in the front of his chest from where Dempsey had caved in his ribs.

Ben Wray had his jaw broken in seven places.

I am sure more examples will come up.

If its true about Marciano-LaStarza 2, then Marciano not only ruptured the blood vessels in LaStarza's arms, but chipped the bones in his arm as well. LaStarza also urinated blood after the fight, saying "Ten rounds I could make with him, but not 15."

LaStarza had his elbow chiped and hairline fractures on his forearm bones.

Great tactic Marciano had, imo. LaStarza was far better boxer than himself, so what was the best thing he could do? Beat the arms, til LaStarza couldnt defend himself any more. Left him wide open for Susie Q.

What in gods name could anyone do with 16 ounce gloves?

Do you know any particulars?

The rumor is the gloves protect the fighters. Not true though. The gloves just protect the hands.

they said Liston used 20 oz gloves in sparring, and could still knock his sparring partners out with a jab and break their teeth.

Didn't he hit Ruben Carter in sparring that even with head gear on he was bleeding out of his ears or something?

Dempsey was breaking bones with 16 oz gloves.

After he beat up Ben Wray in sparing and broke his jaw in several places he was had up in court for it.

Wray as in the radio/media guy who got into the ring with him for some reason?

Yeah. Carter immediatly moved. He knew he would spart with Liston again if they were in the same gym, couldn't turn away, and he knew that he would get hurt.

What freaks me out about this story is that Carter's ears didn't start bleeding until he'd been home for an hour. Talk about a slow burn.

In a Bob Foster interview he said he hit a kid in school once so hard blood came out of his fucking ears too.

even tho i agree that the fist benifts more than the face. but f your training for a fight and your training bareknuckles and get hit...it will open a cut and thats basicly it for you on figth night

Perhaps, cuts and face damage would go up, as it did back in the 1800's. (They became diry fights, and fouls were often let go.)

BUT the added weight to the gloves shakes the brain up more, than a bare fist did.

Now in the day, they poke eyes, pull hair, and thus face damage would seem worse that way. But the brain would be in better shape in a 12 or 15 rounder. I agree a fight to the finish is more dangerious, with or with out gloves, than one with a time limit.
