View Full Version : Southpaws with right hand power?

It seems most of the prolific southpaw punchers throughout history of relied almost entirely on the left for their KO power, some exceptions off the top of my head are Naseem Hamed and of course Marvin Hagler. Calzeghe seems to use the right hook pretty well, although he's not really a power puncher.

Who am I missing? What other southpaws threw the right hand with power

By default most converted southpaws like Hagler would have at least equal power in the right hand.

Andy Ganigan set up his straight left knockdown of Arguello with a hellacious right hook to the body. After their match, it was that hook which Alexis was talking about. Rolando Navarrete essentially knocked out Boza Edwards for the title with his right hook, dropping him twice with it before putting Corny down for the count.

Thoughtful question, by the way.

Featherweight king Vicente Saldivar had a tremendous right hand.

Stopped many unfortunate challengers during his reign.

Remember 80's fringe Lightweight contender Ruben Munoz, Jr? He had a crackling southpaw right...

Hagler's right hand comes immediately to mind as does Nick Wells crunching right hook.

Of course... Michael Moorer.

Both posted on the same minute, great minds think alike. Moorer, a massive hitter at 175, so easy to forget his stint there.

Its true, even at heavy he had a pretty good right hook.

Oh heck yeah, no debate here. Terrifying power at 175.

No doubt, always feel MM is overlooked at LHW, head to head tough fight for any of the ATGs of division

Moorer for sure, he was a converted lefty.
I remember, before one fight, Merchant doing a long detailed speech about how Moorer could be a new generation of fighter, where you lead with the dominant hand rather than keeping it back...
