Does anyone know what became of Hoko? The last scouse world champ.
Used to enjoy watchin him fight. Saw him fight for the world title at g-mex aganst vllisana,he got cut up but won the return. He was a great pressure figher akin to mcguigan and hatton.

Hoko was really excellent value for money...a better than decent fighter with a Foreman like KO %. I hope that he has done OK for himself.

It has to be the McDonnell fight cos i remember Barry getting stopped on cuts after a bit of a hiding and thats the only one that fits the bill. Dunno why i thought it was Hoko though. It's a mystery.

HOKO Was always compared to mcguigan. He was same weght, they had the same manager in Barney Eastwood and their styles were very similar. The comparisons were inevitable.

to answer stonerose...and not meaning to turn the thread away from hodkinson...

this was lifted from an article online stonerose...

"On the 5th of November (Firework Night) 1989 he faced another Brit, Jim McDonnell at the Royal Albert hall in London, England, and Fireworks are exactly what we got! I was one of the many now who acknowledged Nelson as a true all time great by now, after all, he had been involved in 13 World title fights at that point, all against the very best, losing just the once to Sanchez when still a little green, so I gave McDonnell less than no chance. I was wrong. What a cracking competitive fight it was. Nelson wanted rid of Jim early and went straight after him with wild abandon, missing with huge wild left hooks (Nelsons best punch), the second saw Nelson stalk Jim and catch him with bone crunching body shots, it was almost too painfull to watch!! The 3rd was mostly McDonnell as he fought back with body shots of his own although he was caught with a big left.

Jim Dominated the 4th stanza with beautiful combinations switching to uppercuts straight through Azumah's guard. this looked to continue in the 5th but all of a sudden a HUGE left hook put Jim down. Jim beat the count however and at the end of the round hurt Nelson with a left of his own...What an amazing fight this was!

Nelson seemed tired in the 6th and slowed the pace, so Jim capitalised and took the round on work rate alone but the 7th was all Nelson and he hurt Jim with a series of lefts. There was more of the same in the 8th as he had Jim hurt with more lefts. in the 9th, Jim looked shaken and off balance early on, however he took the round by backing up Azumah and kept him trapped for a good part of the round, then all of a sudden he caught Jim with a big right but Jim fired straight back...FANTASTIC STUFF! I darent even drink my beer in case I missed something!! Jims round.

The 10th had ebb and flow, Azumah landed his fabled left early on, however, Jim backed up Azumah and landed flurries of punches to steal the round.

In the 11th, Jim's eye was closing fast, he teed off on Azumah's body early on, however, he no longer could see the punches coming and was getting caught more and more.

Then came the final stanza of a terrific fight that could go either way! Jim crumpled through the ropes after getting caught early by huge winging punches he could not see. Again, he beat the count but he was easy prey now for the merciless Nelson. Azumah landed a vicious short left hook, missed a couple more punches before landing a devastating right that finnished the job off in the last round for the second consecutive defence!

Jim was brave, and exceeded all expectations, but would never realise his world title dreams..."

Hoko's kid Kevin is a good amateur in liverpool at the moment.

As for Paul, not sure what he's up to really, but I know he's not really involved with the sport anymore. He was one of my favourite fighters as a kid! He's a nice fella too.

.... but I know he's not really involved with the sport anymore.

Its sad when this happens, British boxing could do with as much input as it can get from class operators like Hoko.

It's a mystery.Nah Barry never got a hiding from McDonnell,Barry handled him fairly comfortably untill the Londoner started fighting really dirty and deliberaltely and badly headbutted Barry cutting him just as badly. It was stooped bcause of the cuts I think. If I'd have been Barry that night I'd have waited outside Jim dressing room with a crow bar and smashed the dirty cheating bastards head in.And I liked McDonald aswell. But Barry dident derserve to go out like that at all.He was a better fighter than Jim and it saddened me to see Jim have to cheat like he did.

As far as Hoko is concerned he was a damed good fighter, sadly let down by fragile facial features, his losses were allwats the same way,he'd be way infront but steadily his face would begin to swell, getting worse by the minute untill he couldent see.Last I heard of him he was Taxi driving in Liverpool. A smashing good fighter.

He was always good to watch,i dont know if he fought again after losing to Robinson.I think he lost his title to Goyo Vargas but im not sure, that loss probably did more damage to him than the Robinson fight.

Used to hate that he came out to YNWA (sigh) but he was still a local lad and one of my first introductions to boxing. My family were all massive fans.

I remember being really upset when you could see him on-screen saying "I can't see" to his corner-man when he lost whilst first challenging for the WBC Title. His eyes had closed completely. Can't imagine how devasated he must have been.

Was also the first time I'd seen a local lad on Wogan, with the WBC Belt in tow no less.

EDIT: All Wiki says about his personal life is that he lives in Kirkby & has 4 sons, I wish him all the best.
