WTF. The scene announced this bout for Adrenaline MMA III. It was going to have MMA rules but the makers felt that it would be closer if it was a boxing match.

Who wins?

Oh for FFS Mercer.... Why is this guy doing this to himself? Most of all is this even real or accurate?!??!

Mercer should retire. He has not really accomplished much in boxing, even in his prime.

Maybe he needs the money.

If Mercer stays in pro boxing, he'll be looked at as one of those "name" fighters, an over the hill trailhorse for young up and comers to knock out and have as a notch on their W column.

In MMA, he'll be seen as a former world boxing champion and Olympic boxing gold medalist with serious hand striking skills and punching power.

Boxing vs MMA, which is better?!
Ooooooh.. intriguing..

Who knows which is better. Matter of opinion. I like boxing. As for Mercer, fact is that he was never that great.. But he does have decent power. What he did to Morrison was devastating, although the ref should have stopped that earlier.

I think it is pretty obvious that Mercer needs the money. This is the guy that wasted his prime years by being an unmotivated fat slob and by blowing a shot at the real title by losing to Jesse Ferguson by showing up for the fight overweight and unmotivated. The man is basically ignorant.

Mercer has become an embarrassment to boxing with his 24 second loss in a K-1 fight and the Kimbo Slice fiasco.

It appears he getting to embarrass boxing yet again.

just an olympic gold medal

and since 1988 i believe only 2 other people have one gold (u.s)

he beat the shit out of undefeated tommy morrison
KOd undefeated franseco damiani
everyone knows he kicked lennox lewis ass
toe to toe wars with evander holyfield and bert cooper

above average pro career

Yeah Mercer is clearly one of the 10 best heavyweights of the 90's. #4 or 5 in my book. Only behind Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, and maybe Tyson.

Mercer used to be a pretty damn good boxer. Heck, he was good enough to out-jab Lennox Lewis. Back in the day, he would have just destroyed Silvia in a boxing match.. but now, I'm not so sure.. Silvia is a big boy and Mercer isn't gonna be able to just get inside and hit him with combinations (I don't think, at least).

I'll be rooting for him, but I think he's just too old.

Kimbo beat him up in a cage match - but that was MMA rules. Kimbo didn't even attempt to box with him, he just took him down right away. Now, he's gonna throw blows with a tall, strong dude with big range.. it'll be very interesting to see.

I assume they are going to be using the small gloves (?).

I remember watching Silva and thinking if he was in with Lennox Lewis is would be an extremely short fight. I think Lewis would demolish him under either rules because I don't think Silva could have taken him down without getting hit. His defense and striking is terrible. But as for Mercer I have to confess and say I haven't seen him fight in probably 15 years or so. So i'm not sure how much he's declined. I do know he can take a punch and I know Silva's defense is nothing special, but there's what a 10 year age difference? How many rounds 10? what the hell I'll pick Mercer but as mentioned I haven't seen him fight in years.

So if there boxing than I gotta favor Mercer?? I'm assuming this means no grappling or elbows or knees?? No kicks to the head??

Mercer has really gone downhill, who knows what'll happen, but Mercer has been bad in MMA.

But if theres no MMA and its all boxing than I'll favor the boxer anyday...Sylvia is a great in MMA and arguably the best in the world...but Mercer is and always has been a boxer...2 different sports these are!

If Mercer loses to Tim Sylvia in a boxing match he has to retire. The man is 47. Nice little MD over the fake Sonny Liston but he has to ko Sylvia.

Yes, but Mercer has gone downhill so much I don't doubt a big guy like Sylvia who is an MMA striker to just wail on Mercer. Mercer in his prime would KO Silvia, but this Mercer? I'd like to think Mercer has enough to win a UD.

This is about Tim Sylvia, not Anderson Silva.

Anyway, I'd prob back Sylvia anyway. Mercer must be 50, wtf?

I don't see Big Tim fairing very well in a pure boxing match. Mercer may be ancient, but this is his sport, and he was damn good at one time. In MMA, Sylvia is good because he can use his legs and sprawl and whatever else. In boxing, he's just another uncoordinated cream puff begging to get knocked out.

He won a olympic gold medal and IN HIS PRIME a 1time world champ who mixed it with the likes of Lewis and Holyfield in bouts that could of gone his way..
