I have never seen him box but he won a couple of titles. But he also had some really bad losses.
What kind of style did he have and could he box or was it more of a case of him being managed right?

Duke was an upright boxer, with a decent dig in either hand. He employed good movement and scored some tremendous victories...... underrated. What losses are you talking about they were all in pretty decent company.

Well the first round knockout loss to Del Valle seems weird for a boxer who outboxed Canizales and Soto in his previous bouts.
Jacob was a decent boxer but wasn't all that impressive.

What do you mean he's gone?I know he doesn't box anymore I was thinking about purchasing some of his bouts and was wondering what he was like.

It's a joke about his commentary on ITV. Every time someone gets hit he screams he's gone, he's gone john. Now get on the hatton bandwagon.

Didn't Duke say Lacy was gone when Calzaghe was beating the shit out of him?

Didn't Duke say Lacy was gone when Calzaghe was beating the shit out of him?

Several times I believe , one of them justified when Lacy was backed into a corner and Calzaghe connected with a big left(I think) hook counter than had Lacy wobbling around .

Duke was ok but couldn't hold a candle to Viciousboxer!!

Something along the lines of "Im gone John!"

I love Duke's commentary. You can't buy stuff like that...

"He's gone, Jim! His legs have gone!"
"I scored that round even, Jim."
"He's punched himself out!"
"I can't see any way back in the fight for him now, Jim." (usually followed soon by "OHHH what a punch!")

Spoke to Duke in a bar at Caesars palace on Friday and what a great bloke! So friendly he is a big Cotto fan and rates him as being nearly unstoppable at 147lbs that includes a fight with Floyd aswell.

Did you ask him about dave McAuley? I thought McAuley was the bollox when I was growing up - knock him down, but he'll get up and getcha. A bit of a Rocky character.

McAuley had some fcuking wars!!!!!:happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy

Yeh, MacKenzie picked JC over Lacy - his opinion is usually sound, but his commentary is downright surreal. John Rawlings has been using the same phrases for years (I watched the JC dvd Super Champion and it's brilliant - he uses the exact same commentary from fight to fight) and also make bizzare observations mid-fight.

Actually, all the Uk commentators are a bit mad - I wish they'd get McGuigan to do the commentating along with another great Brit boxer who can talk properly. Not sure who.

Here's a question: who'd be an ideal commentary team for ITV, excluding the current choices?

Assuming that they're British and they can get them?

you need people who know tactics. I'd like LL. Hatton - whatever anyone thinks of him - genuinely understands and knows his stuff. I quite like Johnny Nelson n all.

but NOT Steve Bunce. I really don't think he knows all that much. Claude Abrams much better.

Saw Duke beat Charlie Magri. He was tall for a flyweight, nice boxer, with a useful dig

The way he says certain cliches is great-

"His legs have turned to jehlly!"

"He's punched 'iself out!"

The good thing is I actually like Duke for his occasionally silly commentary. I respected his skills as a boxer, and I get a smile out of his sometimes oddball comments and grab-bag of cliches.

It's a bit like Foreman, really. I used to love it when George would go off on an utterly weird tangent in the middle of the fight while Lampley and Merchant tried to yank him back into reality.

Absolutely. He's certainly more fun that Jim Watt.

"Riddick Bowe has the be the bravest fighter I've ever seen... Next to Muhammad Ali."

Yep, Foreman was both bizarre and brilliant. He was almost like a wrestling commentator- his character was so great and unusual it almost had to be scripted. If anyone remembers Rowdy Roddy Piper's commentary for the WWF, that's whom Foreman reminds me of.

I seen that fight, & it was horrible. All I remember was the commentators saying that Del valle was a late replacement, & he was a big puncher.

When del Valle landed he KO'd Mckenzie so badly that I remember sitting there worrying about Duke. He was out cold for what seemed like an eternity. Sometimes when I hear him commentate I think of the worry I had for him that night, & it makes you realise just how brutal a sport boxing can be.

Im sure I watched some of his wins, but thats the fight that sticks out in my head & I remember the most, cos it shook me up pretty bad, considering the boxing tragedy that happened not long before this fight.

seems to me that if he won titles at 3 different divisions (Fly, Bantam and Super Bantamweight) he was not that bad.

btw, Hatton should at least try to do something like that.

I seem to remember some years ago that there was a train crash right at the bottom of where Duke McKenzie was living and he went out to help rescue people from the wreckage. Anybody else remember something along those lines?
