View Full Version : Skelton - Rogan: Fight Exceeds Expectation

I can't remember ever seeing a fight which I had expected to be a hug closely session, turn into such a classic battle.
It wasn't one for the purists, I'll admit, but my god did it deilver? and by the spade full.
This fight exceeded expectations big time.
What are your thoughts of the bout, and can you remember any similar contests that promised so little but delivered so much?

The eighth round was brilliant, fair play to Skelton for surviving it. I think we may see a re match.

I'm racking my brains D-Mac, i honestly can't. There must have been but right now i can't think of a heavyweight comparison. I am still on a high and having binge drinked during the fight am a bit pissed. I missed the first couple of rounds as i wasn't that bothered so went to get some booze in.
I am pretty sure Rogan can't be knocked out, he is Bartley Gorman finally making the pro's listen. :happy

Loved that post mate.
I just know someone will come along and prove me wrong, but it was a "fortress of stone" type fight that was built from "sandcastle" beginnings.

As the experts say styles makes fights and it certainly did tonight. Two guys not prepared to take a step back and it proved a good spectacle. Going back to Dmacs original post i cant think of a fight that has exceeded expectations so much before. Certainly not recently.

What an excellent slugfest. Maybe compare to Morrison-Ruddock but with better chins and less skills.
Who'd have thought ANYONE would be able to bully Skelton. That was a proper fight. Rogan is a real throwback, so tough and so damn ugly!
Who can he fight next?

I am going to make a bold statement:
Best british heavyweight fight of this decade so far.
(Although Rogan is Irish, I count him as british, because best UK fight of the year doesn't sound as good)

Does this mean that Rogan loses the "taxi-driver" moniker? The guy is clearly a fighter. I was shocked to see the headline that he won. Gotta give him credit as Skelton is a tough customer.

Great weekend for fight fans, Rogan is an unmovable brick wall, what heart the man has, i am so pleased for him and his family, John Breen and Eamon McGee in the corner were cracking me up as well they really get the best out of Rogie.

The European belt was at stake in this? I hope it was. Can't see Dimitrenko interested in Skelton after this loss.

No, just the Commonwealth belt.
I think the European title is now vacant.

Rogan could have had him out in the 8th, but Skelton was able to lean on teh ropes and weather the storm, Rogan gassed attempting to do it, then had a bit of a breather in 9 and 10, before finally catching him clean in the 11th, then getting a good 6 or 7 clean shots in.
I thought the fight was going to be shit until about the 4th round, as it was a horrible ManBearPig hug fest until then

Does anyone see Rogan giving Chagaev a better fight than Skelton? Or has he found his level? Would he beat Valuev?
Not mentioning the Klitschko's as I don't think that's too realistic. But he's a comparitive novice (12 fights!!!) and he's doing really well, he might be old but he's fresh and if 47-year old EVander (I know it''s till Holyfield but man he's shot) can look decent against Valuev, why not Rogan, less skilled but fresh and with a good workrate.

I know - I'm a little miffed he didn't have the brainwave to turn to boxing when he was in his mid 20s or something. He'll be one the decline by his 20th fight. Guaranteed.

Both would outpoint Valuev. No they wouldn't. What are they going to do, try and outpoint Valuev on the outside and avoid Valuev's ponderous paws? Nope, because it's not their style and they don't have the finesse for it anyway. And Valuev's extra size will be the undoing of either Skelton or Rogan. Rogan's not a big heavy.

Rogan & Skelton would both have a better than even chance of beating this version of Holyfield too. I don't understand your reasoning.

I loved this fight, so glad Rogie won.
Where does he gi from here he has already surpased everybodies exectations. Nobody at first picked him to win the PrizeFighter, most felt Audley would out point him and nearly everyone thought Skelton would be too strong and experienced. Bt look at him nw, undefeated with a professional title and Audley and Skelton on the cv.

Holyfield has skill on the outside, he made Valuev look ponderous. Rogan doesn't have that in him.
And I'm getting sick and tired of people overrating our fighters. I'm going to bring up the post where I'm specifically stated directly after Thaxton won the European title that he would lose it in his first defence, simply because he wasn't very good.

The sorry excuse for punches that Valuev threw. They may be few and far between, and they may have the power of a kitten behind them, but they were punches. Any fighter that can fight on the outside can beat Valuev. But both Rogan and Skelton would rather bury their faces in Valuev's rug. They won't win that way.

best heavyweight fight I've seen in years, and one of the best fights of any weight division in a while!!
Not high on technique, but so much heart, drive, determination, stamina and a will to win!! Not forgetting that granite chin, he got clipped so many times by a boxer with an impressive KO ratio and just didnt look fazed...I could honestly see him giving any top heavyweight a run for their money..

Wish I had seen this fight, sounds like a real knock em down drag em out affair. However neither would be Valuev.I watched the Vauev/Holyfield fight and had Valuev winning quite clearly,Holyfield dident really do anything apart from circle round Valuev all night. He landed the nicer shots but Valuev kept his straight left in his face for long periods of the fight. It was not even close to being a robbery, thats just another myth.I thought Valuev looked bored and like he had no interest inthe fight at all.,He just went through the motions but it was than enough for this old version of Holy.

Good fight. Two old school tough Brits battling out. Mayweather has more talent in one arm then they do in their whole body but they were tough customers and that is the sort of boxing that makes good tv. We have a good British heavyweight scene, they just need to fight. Skelton, Williams, Sprott, Harrison, Rogan etc etc etc Alot of these bouts are boring but they've produced some good performances/entertaining fights like Harrison v Williams 2, Harrison v Sprott, Skelton v Rogan etc

did u see his interview on frank****** on youtube? looks like he could go another few rounds again!
more importantly, someone get this onto youtube so we Martins BRITISH AND IRISH fans can watch that war again and show the rest of the world how heavyweight fights shud be fought!
PS when he scored the knockdown and then the stoppage i think it was the first time in a long time I have cheerd a punch or series of punches like a wondergoal in football or somthin. my mate who doesnt even like boxing was going mental. he'd had a few cans and possibly sum wacky backy and turned to me and said "I feel privelidged to be here for that".......made then fight even better!

He forces the action, even against a guy who holds and hits on the break as he backs away as Skelton does. This was a great fight. I was more suprised by the effort Skelton gave than Rogan. Skelton could have folded many times but stayed in and had a couple good rounds late. This was an absolute gem. I'm a little tired of people saying Rogan isn't skilled. He doesn't jab but in the heavyweight division he isn't built for that type of fight. boxrec lists him at 6'3', i think he's a shade over 6 feet. He pressures guys, works the body, and as demonstrated by the Skelton fight, adjusts to his opponnent. What a great fight to watch!

Ireland is part of the geographical description of the groups of islands known as the British isles and this term originated when Ireland was part of Britain which it no longer is. Hence nowdays you will often hear British and Irish isles instead.

Cool, I would also support an English boxer like when Hatton fought Mayweather, I wanted Hatton to win. A lot of English people have Irish blood and vice versa so why not support each other.
But you have to understand how that comment might piss people off.

quite simply retarded you lil tool, you're completely wrong and for you to say that you cunts support our sportsmen is another retarded sentiment that i totally disagree with, all you have to do is look at the commentary in any irish v british fight that occurs, lindsay v matthews, didnt give a fuck about lindsay until he knocked the clean cunt off derry!rogan v skelton, was that fucking commentary biased or what towards skelton he'd dance about for two seconds and maybe throw out a jab or two and all you could hear was, "that's brilliant,it's the way he should have been fighting from the opening bell,i believe that he's going to go on to a comfortable points decision now" fuck the fact that for those two jabs skelton threw the next one he tried to throw, our boy rogie was all over him like an irish man fucking your wife!
there clearly is a huge gulf between supporting irish/welsh/scottish fighters and this is apparant from the offset when they as soon as they show some good form they suddenly become british rather than one of the other countries.i don't support english sportsmen,i appreciate that some of them are great boxers but it certainly ain't their nationality that gets me supporting him, take two examples in lockett and jennings, what the fuck why would i support them to beat two fighters that are lightyears superior, and why the fuck should i support a brit because they're in a title fight when they should barely be on the undercard.it's just wrong and something that justifies these bollox fights that don't even make sense on a financial level, corrupt to the bone!
nice touch there aswell mate, mick bastard (original might I add) yet you say your dad is irish, well ain't we all lucky he fucked off to engerland and spawned such a retarded cunt in a foreign land!

wow, everybody just chill the hell out!!
It's great that we have Brits supporting our boxers, nothing wrong with that. I do the same with SOME Brit fighters, mainly because I get a better sense of the fighter because of the exposure they get. I also have a tendency to support some of our euro fighters When they go to fight in america etc...
But just to clear up, so we can all move on. Some fighters from Northern Ireland consider themselves Irish (which is their right), and others consider themselves British (also their right)..For me, I support any boxer that comes from this island no matter what race, religion, sex they are and I think everybody should do the same. All this political bollocks has no place in sport and instead of arguing about who's from wat country, we should be concentrating on how well our boxers are doing as sportmen.
Listen Barrington, I know where your coming from with what your trying to say. But I think you should understand that people in Ireland would not say Ireland is part of the 'British Isles'. That is just a name placed on the two Islands collectively years ago when Ireland was in the British Empire. To most people in Ireland we would just call Ireland Ireland, and Britain Britain. If for some reason you have to call the two islands by a collective term, its really not that difficult to call it the Brittish and Irish isles is it??
Anyway, I can't believe i've just talked politics on a boxing forum, but hey what can ya do!!

wow, everybody just chill the hell out!!
It's great that we have Brits supporting our boxers, nothing wrong with that. I do the same with SOME Brit fighters, mainly because I get a better sense of the fighter because of the exposure they get. I also have a tendency to support some of our euro fighters When they go to fight in america etc...

Can we expect a rematch, for the European belt this time?
Looks like ****** and Skelton kept it in the pocket in case of an upset.

I think this win will put Rogan somewhere in the ABCs ranking, maybe top 10.
He deserves it right? beating Audley and Skelton is much more than many of the ranked fighters ever did.

Could well be with Frank ****** guiding him, he may even be higher.
We'll have to wait until they publish their new Rankings but it wouldn't surprise me to see him on there.
