View Full Version : British Forum BETTING thread
I think we should have a thread dedicated to this artform. I personally like to win enough betting to pay for the weeks food and drink. What do you spend your winnings on?
Are you a regular better - what sports do you bet on?
Purely in online terms - where do you bet?
Who were the biggest winners and losers this weekend? I had £10 on Rocky Juarez and £100 on Marquez which luckily I had already waged prior to changing my mind to Juan Diaz! I won £61 minus the £10 for Juarez for earnings of £51
Which lines are interesting you in the near future?

Please make this a sticky!!
I occasionally bet on boxing and cricket. My main betting is on football and rugby..... don't remember the last time I lost on rugby, but don't stick enough cash on to make a decent return!

Generally William Hill online..... there is also a shop near me so often call in as well.
I left the rugby alone this weekend, wasn't sure how many Ireland would beat England by, with Ireland being 1/4 purely for the win, not worth it at all.

I might stick a few quid on South Africa to beat Australia tomorrow, their bowlers will be tired, Kallis at the crease and DeVilliers, Duminy and Boucher to come in.

They were around 1/2 at half-time after the shakey first half on Betfair!
I'm usually with Bet365 for boxing parlays.
Not a fan of betting on football. Too much luck involved, goes in off a guys ass and thats money down the drain. Shit odds on the good teams. There isn't any great value such as in boxing, where we can make decisions based on style with luck being a much smaller intangible.

Unlucky mate. That was a smart bet, should have come through for you.
Hopefully this thread will bring to peoples attention some good bets. I think a lot of people missed Karo Murat by stoppage last night. Crazy good odds on betfair, 5/1 at one point against a guy that has already been stopped twice!

My Betfair account showed me well up on football, down on boxing, and catastrophic on horses. Overall down, of course.
Which is in line with my knowledge of each sport.
Every now and again a football match crops up that is nailed on, it's a gut feel, and I can confidently pick it.
For example England to win to 0 is often a good bet and the scorers aren't shared around much.
A lot of matches scream 0-0 too.
Khan to beat Barrera could be value. ****** isn't paying Barrera to come over and slay his cash cow is he.

I now, was gutted to be honest.
I had a look at Murat, but wasnt touching that fight on the basis their first fight looked close although it was a UD. Murat was 1/4 on to win straight with Paddy Power.
Didnt touch Skelton-Rogan nor the Thaxton fight either and thankfully i was proven right in both, that they were hard to call and Rogan upset the odds, as did Mezaache
I try to have a bet every weekend of two.
Biggest win was €370 for a €45 bet

I can see Hatton walking onto way too many counter rights and in general an accumulating of punches getting to him. Not sure about Hattons chin and his ability to take punishment either

There is no catch. Think about it, Betfair don't lose anything. You put the £25 in, they simply give it you back if you lose the first bet. It's a bet to nothing, which is fine if you take the money and run.
However, they've got you in :yep

Betfair generally offers better prices
Up to about year ago they clearly offered the best prices by a long shot.
The rest of the normal bookies appear to have matched their odds closer nowadays. They generally are still the best though, but there's far less in it then there used to be.
I wouldn't be surprised is some of the small bookies lay bets to punters at shorter odds and back at the bigger odds on there.
I agree Betfair isn't much good for multiples (which seem to be away from the exchange on there), but there is Betdaq.co.uk which is also an exchange (which generally offers better prices) and they do multiples as such. I rarely do multiples though...
[Only registered and activated users can see links] ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
Anyway...
I broke even this weekend literally 0.00. Backed Diaz, but backed JMM (in play) with some of my possible winings to cover my original stake, when he was behind on the cards. JMM was around 2/1 at one point. Thankfully it wasn't a draw, as I would have been out of pocket.

ON betfair most markets are rounded: For example say you have two boxers with identical chances of winning you'll get evens on both. All you pay is 5% commission on your winnings. They don't run a book as such they make there money through commision. They charge commision to run the exchange, punters bet with each other.
Thats not the case with normal bookies who run books far short of a rounded 100% in order to take a cut themselves. For example Two boxers with an even chance of winning might well both be 4/5, or less, at a normal bookie - the bookie taking the difference on both between 4/5 and 5/5 (evens).
Rather than taking the 5pc commision betfair take - some bookie markets fall 20% or 30% short - or maybe more.
The only trouble with boxing on Betfair is the poor liquidity of the markets, which isn't the case with many other sports on there.

Cricket is much easier!
Dawson, Moore, Klitschko, McCloskey, Braehmer are very useful in an accumulator this month.

You don't often get the chance to do accumulators in cricket. You can do allsorts really, best batsman, best bowler etc, as well as calling the results - this can be done prior or during the event as well.
I tend to leave county cricket alone and stick to internationals - best bowlers (for each team) are usually pretty simple. For an ODI series involving Australia you can get decent odds for Nathan Bracken. Add Ponting for best batsman and you have a tidy profit from £5.
Likewise back the home team should a series be in the subcontinent, espec if England are the opposition.
Yes I got 4/9 when they were four down on one website, then evens at 5 down on another - strange!

Yes thats a very strange scenario you mentioned at the bottom there but I wouldn't complain I'd just place a bet, especially given that Kallis was the 5th wicket was he not??
You would have got decent odds on Swann being the best bowler in both this match, the last match and the series. Not sure what the series stats are looking like right now but he has to up there in Englands stats which isn't bad going given that he didn't play the first 2 tests

I tried it a few times since but had no luck so nowadays I trim it down to 3 draws which is alot more manageable and odds are roughly minimum 35/1.Worth 50p from down the back of the sofa I'd say.Still unlikely though hard to call draws.I think you'd be better off with a higher stake and taking 3/4 home wins from the long list.I've had my fingers burned with some of these 'bankers' in the past.Greed is a bastard

ribery out for bayern, and they wont be giving anything near 100%! plus klinsmann may rest players as well, or at least sub big players out around the 60 min mark!

so for me the draw at nearly 3/1 on betfair may be worth a little flutter
although they will prob win....
also the draw in the chel-juve game at 2/1 really sticks out for me, i cant see it being anything other then a tight game with chel doing what they do best; holding on to a lead and winning!

I remember looking at their team sheet at the start of the tournament and thinking... mmm.. a pretty tasty line up. They were struggling a bit in the Bundesliga though at the time.
Don't be fooled by Bayern. When Ribery is off song they struggle for inspiration. Defensively they are poor with individuals prone to errors. Sporting are rubbish.

I remember looking at their team sheet at the start of the tournament and thinking... mmm.. a pretty tasty line up. They were struggling a bit in the Bundesliga though at the time.
ya they struggling in Bundesliga, but they seem to be getting it together just in time for the trophy hand outs, looks like klinsmann might do it again like with Germany

Don't be fooled by Bayern. When Ribery is off song they struggle for inspiration. Defensively they are poor with individuals prone to errors. Sporting are rubbish.

Made some money laying Binocular in the Champion Hurdle, the price was far lower than it rightly should have been.
Haven't decided whether to do the same with Master Minded today in the Champion Chase. On the one hand this one is clearly far and away the best horse in the race (unlike Binocular), on the other the odds are mighty skinny. Watching for now, but if they get much skinnier I may not be able to resist.
Probably will be laying Man Utd in the football tonight as well, at least at the start. 0-0 away draws are overrated in European ties, probably it was a better result for Inter than it was for United, especially as United wasted chances to score. Inter will be set up right and look to frustrate early and hit on the break.
I won't touch Inter-United. Firstly, Inter could get jammy and then its a massive uphill struggle for United. But overall, I don't actually fancy them defensively, Chivu is out I believe, and I think if United set a pace like Liverpool did last night the Italians (South Americans) will struggle. But yeah...there is still the jammy/away goal element.
Arsenal to go through is tempting me.

I'm tempted to lay a small wager on Arsenal as well
Materazzi, Burdisso and Chivu all out for Inter. Samuel only just recovering from a knock.
They could look very soft at the back tonight considering the opportunities United created in the San Siro.

In that case Scum are worth a fiver as well, unless the odds have changed drastically.
Man Utd to win and Arsenal to draw at 4.5/1. I think that is a reasonable bet for tonight.
Or less risk is both to simply go through at Evens, although really United have to win so United to win and Arsenal to go through at better than evens!

United could still go through after a 0-0 draw over ninety minutes, hence the slight odds discrepency between the two bets.

Aye.
I'm just saying, if I was going to make a bet on that fixture I'd take United outright. Doesn't say much for your confidence in the bet otherwise!

i have put a bit on to make it more interesting this weekend
£5.00 accumulator:
Enzo by stoppage
Macklin by stoppage
Abraham by stoppage
Pryce by stoppage
McCloskey to win outright
not too much return, but like i said, makes it more interesting
Interestingly McCloskey is 5/6 on to STOP Harrison.
I agree with the odds, over 12 rounds I think he will stop him. I was hoping for a little more value though.

If you are going to include all of those fights you'll do well if it comes through...but really any number could go wrong.
Pryce/Hall, Khan/MAB, Cook/Martinez...good chance one of these does not go your way. I've seen Maccarinelli at better odds too, 1/6.
Anyway, if it was me I'd take a small bet on Khan/Pryce/Maccarinelli/Cook PTS and Macklin instead of Fury.

I fancy Elcock to be honest, plus I wont be betting Enzo or Fury at those odds.
Pryce, Cook and I cant decide on Khan Mab.
I really dont know if there is money to be made this w/e on the boxing.
May stick to the handicap betting for the 6 nations.
Yep they are all 50/50 matchups, and not even the type where its obvious who will win.
Nobody has a stylistic edge in Hall/Pryce, but Pryce has better experience. Pryce is likely too slick, but at the same time he's at his worst under pressure.
Khan has no chin and we don't know what Barrera really has left.
Martinez is an unknown quantity. But I'd say the best value of the evening could be Cook on PTS. The kid can box but his power is nothing. The bookies must know something we don't with Martinez, I wouldn't put much, but I've not really bothered researching this guy yet. Maybe when I get home. From the little I saw on Barrera/Khan countdown he looked pretty wild and crude, but big and strong. Good chance Cook outboxes him for a close decision if thats typical for him.

Afolabi 14/1 to beat enzo on points on skybet, worth a go?
Looking at that myself. With Afolabi at 6/1 best price but the KO only 7/1 suggests that if he is going to win it will be by KO'ing Macca. From what I've seen of him (not much) he doesnt seem to have much pop and if he was going to win it would be by outboxing and frustrating Macca then snatching a decision. 16/1 wth bet 365.
Also bookies are shortening up on Barrerra KO. Some go as short as 6/4 now when most had him at 5/2 at the begining of the week.

I bet on Boxing and the NRL in Aussie .... get some good returns made some good money last year but this year the form book has been thrown outta the window so showing a loss .... but Canberra Raiders to win at the Sharks this weekend is a good bet !
Boxing showing very good profits - Had big big winners on Monroe , Vitali 4/6 v Peter which was a laydown bet .... and JMM v Diaz .... and for all you boxing punters always look at Bet365 they are a top bookie and give best odds and do draw no bet ... had a double on Chris John and JMM and thought my bet was down as John drew but much to my surprise when i logged on had £672 there in my account as the John fight was classified as a non runner .... happy days or what !

Think the Aussies are up against it that new quickie for SA look very good the left armer Parnell .... superb performance over the weekend . Aussies look in rebuilding mode but will still stuff us in the Ashes im afraid to say !
I'm not convinced they'll beat England if England get their selections right. It is pretty evenly matched. The Australian batsman are more frail than times previously, they've been bundled out a few times now. And really...apart from Johnson the bowling does not scare anybody. Siddle is okay, McDonald is accurate but not threatening, Hilfenhaus has had a tough start to test cricket and no real spinner to speak of.
Should be a good series.

From a man from Reykjavik your cricket knowledge is A+ .... but theres a certain Brett Lee and Stuart Clarke to come back firing ... and if Tait can regain his form he will be a danger too ...admit spinners they have none whatsover and England have two very good ones in Swann and Monty but will England prepare turning wickets ? NO we wont cos its just not cricket !
Think Englands batting line up is weak ... Freddies a top class fast bowler but hes no top allrounder and they insist on putting him in at 6 ... he should be 7 max with 6 top class batsman b4 him .... IMO Broads a better bat than Freddie ....
Beeston Brawler
04-08-2009, 06:22 AM
That's the thing..... England rarely have the guts to make the correct calls, instead preferring horses for courses selection.
The Aussies will have Lee back in the side, who is obviously far better than McDonald or Hilfenhaus...... plus Symonds and Watson will be in the mix as well.
England's bowlers aren't good enough to bowl a top batting side out twice, they struggled badly against in all honesty a weakass Windies team (Gayle, Sarwan and Chanderpaul apart)......
3-1 Australia.
mryeags
04-08-2009, 06:24 AM
Agree Beeston .... my moneys on the Aussies ! on this occasion i hope i lose but were making a few quids concerned theres no heart felt decisions ....
A mate of mine is plowing into the Aussies hes investing all winning from his bets back onto the Aussies ... and he knows his cricket ....
Lee has had a serious injury and seems to have lost the plot recently. He has a poor record against England anyway.
Clark is obviously a good bowler, and he's getting some practice in England. I forgot about him.
I think England will produce the same wickets they always do, engineered to last 5 days and rake in the money. That brings the spinners into play, England have a distinct advantage here, especially having seen the Australians struggle with Paul Harris! It was a big mistake to take Old Trafford off the schedule, this was a big chance for an England win IMO.

04-08-2009, 06:34 AM
England selectors need to have the gonads to make bold decisions .... Out go Harmison , Prior , Bell(possibly) and Anderson .... in comes Key as skipper , Davies or Ambrose , Jones is a must selection and maybe a recall for Hoggy ..... we also need to persist with Shah and maybe give a run to Bopara ...
I personally think Strauss hasnt got the personality for skipper hes way too cautious and has been found wanting this series against windies but his batting has been superb ... Key is worth another go ! hes talented and a brilliant skipper ....
And the KP situation needs sorting he seems a right drama queen hes our best player but hes like a spoilt child ... the skipper should tell him to STFU ...
I agree with your outs.
There is no problem with Prior's batting, he's very good, but he just sucks at keeping and that is his primary role. You can't afford to drop Ponting on 0 and he goes onto get 150. I remember him dropping Chanderpaul and he got a big score. It by far outweights getting a 50 as a batsman. And all those fuckin byes :patsch
Harmison and Bell have no balls. They can't be relied upon under big pressure.
mryeags
04-08-2009, 06:45 AM
Harmy is just a waste of talent ...when he tore throo an albeit poor WI side taking 7-12 he had pace and fire ...put the ball in the right place and looked a future world star .... but ever since that tour hes looked disinterested saying he doesnt wanna tour he comes on as second or third change bowler and I bowl quicker than he does ...well not really !
The skipper should really be saying right harmys in the team theres the new ball bowl fast n straight and aggresive ... but no we have Anderson and Sidebottom who are at best first change bowlers with the new ball ... I have to admit though Sidebottom did do very well when first on the scene .... we need pace n aggresion aka Freddie n Jones at the start of the innings then when the balls a bit older get Sidebottom and Broad moving it around .... As a cricket side were not aggresive enuff ... look at the Aussies of old and Gayle for the WI to name but two there positive cricketers - we are negative from the start !

Tyson Fury at 1/50...... but they don't have any odds on a stoppage..... Lenny Daws at 1/8 isn't worth touching either.
Bet365 always do. They are quite slow in confirming results. The Jean Pascal fight was still on there an hour after he knocked that guy out cold.

That's not including (hardly) any boxing betting! Betfair sucks for boxing.
I could tell you but I'd have to take 10% of your winnings...
Nah...mostly to WIN. I don't pick draws. My theory is that if you are unsure as to pick a draw it really suggests any result is possible. It's a stab in the dark.
Mostly small bets to WIN has built that up, Premiership, Champs League and UEFA. And the occasional accumulator.
I'm a big believer in betting In Play also. I usually give myself 10 minutes and hope it stays 0-0. Just get a feel for how the teams are setup and how things settle down. It's a big help.

That's not including (hardly) any boxing betting! Betfair sucks for boxing.
I could tell you but I'd have to take 10% of your winnings...

I would stick the house on that...... Paul Deacon is missing and Bradford will be down in the dumps after the shocking loss to Catalans last week  :party
Actually, Leeds to win by more than 12.5 points at 5/4 is decent, but on reflection not as good as the 10/11 for an 8 point win, gonna stick with that.
You can lay against Leeds to win SL at 13/8 - deffo worth a look..... Saints are shit hot this season.
I can't believe we fucked it up against Orient..... I never bet on Leeds when they play away, so hot and cold. Actually leave us alone until the playoffs, word is the likes of Beckford and Naylor will be rested to ensure they don't pick up silly bookings and miss the big games.
For you djoc.....
Huddersfield to beat Celtic Crusaders at 1/8 is a steal (sounds odd but still)
Castleford to beat Wakefield is tempting at 4/7, though Wakefield are also good at 9/5 (leave I'd say)
There is nothing for the other round of fixtures yet but Leeds to beat Salford is a banker at home, Castleford are worth a punt away at Warrington (who are in turmoil but check odds), St. Helens will beat Hull, and Huddersfield should win at Hull KR.
Check the odds on those first though :good
Stoke to beat Newcastle at 13/10 is criminally tempting.

Just put a cheeky fiver on Solis to win.... what I had left in my Bet365 account - leaving the rest of the boxing alone.
Rajasthan are 41/5 with Betfair or 8/1 with Bet365 to win the IPL - with Warne, Smith and a few other classy players in the side they are worth a pop.

Leeds to beat Tranmere at home... 4/5 - we have won our last nine at home without looking like losing - though Delph is banned..... thoughts?
