The Greg Page of 1980-1982 against the Gerry Cooney of the same time period.Does Greg's boxing ability win out or does Gerry's tremendous left hook seals the deal for him?

Taking this for face value, I'd probably have to pick Page to stick out a decision on this one. Assuming that they fought in a non-title, 10 round bout, Cooney should be able to go the distance. Gerry would be aggressive in the early rounds and might pick up a few points early. As time went on, however greg's slick style and boxing abilty would help him to take control of the fight, leading to a wide, or at least unanimous outcome. In a longer bout, such as a 12 round match for say a regional title, I might even have to go with Page by a late stoppage.

Cooney by KO. Just too big and powerful for a guy who didn't have the greatest chin in the world.

Page by decision. Cooney was too slow to compete with Greg, who could also be extremely dangerous when backing up.

Cooney knocks him out, probably early as most have said.

Page suffered from a few faults, not the stiffest beard, not the greatest fortitude or consistency. Pre-Holmes, Gerry was on a roll. I give him this one in emphatic fashion. KO4.

Page chased Cooney for near 2 years, Super Greg by right hand stoppage around the 7th.

Page stops Cooney in the eighth round.Cooney might be able to tag Page a couple of times, but Greg had a pretty strong chin.In addition, Cooney wasn't the strongest guy, so Page wouldn't have to worry about being mauled to death.Gerry at most wins one round, Greg would use his speed and fluidity to offset him and drops him twice in the eighth for a stoppage, though a knockout is possible.

Page was the stand-out Heavy of the first half of the 80's, he beats Cooney every time, late KO would be my guess.

This fight would be just about like any Cooney fight at that time against the other Contenders he didn't fight. If the fight goes more than 5 rounds Cooney loses on points or gets KOed.

never thought much of cooney. his best performance was a fight he was clearly losing before getting knocked out. before that he beat the ruined corpses of some very good 70s heavyweights.

good jab, great left hook....that's where the accolades end for cooney. is that hook enough to destroy page? don't know enough to say

Depends on which Page shows up. I could see Cooney sparking Page who despite what a few in this thread said did not have a great Chin. I could definitely see Cooney KOing Page, Weaver, Tillis, etc. and other contenders of that era and I could also see the same fighters surviving the first 4 or 5 rounds and tiring Cooney out. The thing about Cooney was he could hook under and over with his left hand as most guys can just hook to the head or the body effectively but not both. He was a very dangerous fighter and because of his awful management we did not get to see him against the other contenders many of whom were not in a rush to fight him either especially after the Norton fight and that savage KO.

Page by decision. Too skilled and too fast for Cooney.

When he was very good/good, only Tillis dropped him, and that was minorly debatable.

When this thread was initially started a few years ago, I went with Page.. Now I'm not so sure. On the surface it certainly looks as though page had the right boxing style and set of physical tools to beat Cooney, but the flipside is that he was also beaten by a lot of shit fighters. Who knows?
