I'm not really sure. Someone on here said they met him once in the Oakland California area, but couldn't give me a reason why he resigned. Leroy Jones, however retired due to a torn retina sustained from the Holmes fight.

jaffay 3589408 How would you describe in few words those fighters? Talented? Solid? Bum?
Roy Williams - Under rated big man wit a big punch and solid chin. Never had the right connections to get a chance.
Rodney Bobick - Duane's brother, fair journeyman.
Ibar Arrington - Good opponent for a young fighter to face.
Alfredo Evangelista - Fringe contender with connections who went the distance and some say beat an older Ali.
Leroy Jones - Hard to judge. Only lost to Holmes. Untested in some ways.
Scott LeDoux - A colorful fringe contender type.
Lucien Rodriguez - See Evangelista comment.
Scott Frank - A non descript fighter who got a title shot.
David Bey - A pretty solid young fighter who had some nice wins before he fought Holmes.
>>I would say Williams and Bey were the best of the bunch, and had the stuff to be top ten heavyweights today. Holmes had 20 successful title defenses in a row. Not all of these fighters were top contenders.

Roy Williams - He lost a decision to Richard Dunn who was KO'd in 11 of his 12 losses
Rodney Bobick -Bobick had no power and no skill, just big and thick
Ibar Arrington - Tough trial horse but lacking skill lost to Greg Sorrentino 8-2 lost to Joe Roman(yea the one Foreman smashed in 1) and Ed Bytaway before he fought Holmes
Alfredo Evangelista -He was nothing Ko'd in 5 by L.Spinks KO in 2by Page and 7 by Larry
Leroy Jones -Jones was horrible( I remember Tom Bethea a middleweight knocking all over the ring at the 28th st. gym in N.Y. City
Scott LeDoux -Tough Trial horse but most of his big fights were losses
Lucien Rodriguez -Lets put it this way Evangilista stopped him 3 times
Scott Frank -Young green kid but Holmes stuck his thumb in his eye( scott complained and RSC
David Bey - Bey got a win over a even less than conditioned Page but Bey was Bad and proved it by winning only 4 of his next 16 fights

Thanks for your observations, and do you remember any of this guys being ranked high when figtin Holmes?
Bummy Davis

yea but there was so much politics at the time...Ring Magazine's John Ort was indicted for fixing the ratings and taking payments from King, one of the guys that got a high ranking was Holmes opponent Tom Prater.......anyone could pop up in the ratings and it was not always for skill

Holmes should have just fought Page when Page was his mandatory. Considering the guys Holmes fought instead, that is a deserved black eye on Holmes' ledger. And with guys like Pinklon Thomas, Mike Dokes, and even Witherspoon and Williams, Holmes chose to fight dopey, smiley, and grumpy!

I really don't think it matters one way or the other.

For all the shit he's still getting 25 years later, you'd think it would have been easier.

Roy was a banger , a dangerman but merely that, he could be a handful if you were not capable of holding your own around the top 15.. David Bey was a very good boxer and had world class toughness , but little else.. he almost caused the Tyrell Biggs gravy train to crash in 87 when Biggs was # 1 contender by the WBA... Evangelista was the best Europe had , a tough Uruguayan who lived and boxed out of Spain.. He had skills of a B- nature.. Leroy Jones had some fast mitts and became sickened when he lost a solid winning streak heavily to Larry, he was horribly conditioned but strikingly fast .. he never fought again after Larry wore his ass out.. Scott Frank had second class tools and was out of his depth against Holmes , that fight was overmatching in reality, Scott had a ranking but not against anyone near Larrys standard.. Rod Bobick was really an also ran, he was never one to run from a fight , but never really stern opposition, he boxed Weaver and a few other class guys from around that era , but was always gonna be second best.... Ibar was a rugged sparring partner type who was again out of his depth once you start talking about anyone inside that top 15, and the European Lucien was like Lorenzo Zanon, a slapping zero power guy who was a big fish in France but on the grand scale was just plain ordinary.........

Yeah, Holmes just didn't do the right thing. He ducked! 25 years of time doesn't change that.

Roy Williams - Impossibly strong, powerful and tough, but very lacking in skill. Holmes-Williams was the ultimate Boxer vs. Puncher fight.
Rodney Bobick - Average sub-contender.
Ibar Arrington - Tough and brave but very limited.
Alfredo Evangelista - Standard 1970s/1980s Euro-champion. There was nothing particularly wrong with him and nothing particularly right with him.
Leroy Jones - Underrated but largely unproven.
Scott LeDoux - A very good journeyman: nothing more but also nothing less.
Lucien Rodriguez - See Alfredo.
Scott Frank - See Leroy Jones.
David Bey - He had a good workrate and all the heart in the world, but not much else.
I never use the word "bum" to describe any boxer (save the likes of Zelenoff) but most of this lot were bog-standard rather than terrible.

some say beat an older Ali.
I've never heard anyone say that, although I think pretty much everyone has to agree than Evangelista did much better than anyone expected.

No worries, i just can't for the life of me see how Frank rates "Ok" when Bey, LeDoux and even Rodriguez get the bum rating.
Franks only fight of note was a draw against an inconsistent Snipes coming off the Holmes loss. Bey gave Holmes (declining indeed) absolute hell where Frank did bugger all. Even Rodriguez lasted longer vs Holmes than Frank. LeDoux while not amazing has an infinitely longer and better record. He's been in with a fantastic array of fighters. Holmes, Spinks, Foreman, Norton, Weaver, Page, Coetzee etc. That's some list.
Bey would open a serious can of whoopass on Frank.

Like you I find it extremely distasteful when people refer to boxers as Bums , especially when they do so from the safety of their computer chairs.:-(

Frank was limited but he had power....I was never impressed with Bey...At least Frank trained...Bey lost 12 of his last 16 fights after Holmes but the 80's had a bunch of unfit guys who where not devoted to training
by the way I got to say you always have the best avatar.....always the slim, fit, fresh ....good eye
I am not big Holmes suporter, and don't see him as Top 10 all time--although I won't argue too strongly against those who do. Anyway, list is unfair to Holmes, those were easy fights he took while champ, but he also fougy good contenders too.
Rodney Bobick fight I saw, I believe it was on undercard of a big fight. It was so early in career it' s not worth considering. Holmes won a one-sided fight, was totally in control.

Hey cheers Bummy.
TBH i reckon Bey hit harder. Some of those rights he hurt Holmes with were quite jolting. Bey was a comfortably bigger man than Scott.
