Cuties are not strickly boxers IMO Ali was more of a boxer than a cutie but I will start my list....curious to see who were the best of the cuties that fought in the Heavyweight division...Remember not all boxers are cuties...and not all Runners were cuties...a cutie is a fighter than makes you miss, moves well in and out with pin-point well timed shots and makes you look bad...

did Tunney,Ali,Conn qualify

1) Jersey Joe Walcott
2) Jimmy Young

ain't that a surprise 50s heavies in your list = overrated fighters. i'd love to see those 50s heavies against the 70s heavies. imagine ali, frazier, foreman and holmes v marciano, charles, moore and walcott. there's only one clear winner and jimmy young is below norton & quarry atleast in the 70s team - on a level with shavers & lyle:)

Given your definition of a cutie I'd say Eddie Machen and Chris Byrd seems to fit the bill. At least they often made opponents look bad.

The thread is about cute fighters, not who's better. Anyway Jersey Joe was exactly who came to mind when I saw this thread.

Mike the bounty Hunter was another one, although he never really got the big matchups. If he had, perhaps he'd be remembered better & he was certainly capable of springing upsets.

jersey joe's shoulder faints and dropping his arms to break his opponents concentration were beautiful. 10/10 for being cute

Chris Byrd fit the bill, most of the time, when he wanted to prove he was a puncher he lost focus...Chambers is a comer but not always fit but slick...but good ones for the list

Damiani clearly fits this bill. He was dominating Mercer until Ray busted his nose with a "lucky" punch, and decisioned Stevenson in a major amateur upset.

Haven't seen that in a while, but didn't Damiani mostly come forward and smother the longer ranged-Stevenson, instead of being a "cutie"?

Lee Oma from 50s if he applied himself &trained. Pastrano from that period, he was really elusive.Machen. Those guys come to mind.:happy

You r forgetting James Toney, he was one of the cutest heavyweights out there

I was thinking the same thing. He may not have been an all-time great, but he could make almost anybody look bad.

Yea, Toney too. But I think that Russian Sultan could be considered a cutie too. Very slick from what little I've seen of him.

Hmm, would Jimmy Ellis count? Can't fault a 155 middleweight who fought Ruben Carter who moved up to HW.

Corbett, though that's hard to discern without footage of him.

Tony Tubbs, of course.

I could only think of Walcott, (I forgot to add Moore) Jimmy Young, James Toney...Sometimes Byrd ( when he did not try prove he could punch)

Chambers may be a cutie in the making but his training looks a bit compromised....Mike Hunter had a lil cute style but he diod not excell in the upper bracket
Ezzard Charles had some cute moves but was really a master counter puncher

so this is the list for ATG CUTIES

1) Jersey Joe Walcott
2) Archie Moore
3) Jimmy Young
4) James Toney
5) Chris Byrd

Just not sure where she rates??

Karl Mildenberger?

Mildenberger was a stolid Southpaw, nothing unpredictable or clever about him Cooper made him look shit before the German fouled out. A better choice from that era would be Joe Erskine. But the undisputed Champ for Heavyweight Cutie is Jersey Joe!

I must say a word for the unimpressive looking, but surprisingly effective Sultan Ibragimov. I gained alot of respect from him from his fights against Briggs as well as the over the hill Holyfield. He utilizes that awkward style of his and knows well his limitations, and I would definitely consider him to be an underrated "cutie".

The "King of the Cuties", of course was Jersey Joe Walcott, the "Cutie" par excellance.

Of that list, Walcott is unique in the sense that he also packed one hell of a punch, in both hands. Put the great Joe Louis three times on the seat of his pants and of course who could forget that great uppercut on Charles, or the hook that put Marciano down. Pinpoint accuracy and timing. If you look at those others, Byrd, Young and Toney are pretty much featherfisted. Moore had good power though, and Ibragimov has decent power.

He also had the ability to change styles. For instance, if all you'd ever seen of him was the first round of Walcott-Marciano I, then you'd think he was an aggressive power puncher. Interesting change of strategy, and certainly a smart one considering Rocky could start a bit slow, but he couldn't know that the man is almost impossible to hurt..

James "Quick" Tillis was a decent "cute" fighter from this era.

Pontius... that single hook from Walcott to the chin of Marciano, has alarming similarities of the hook SRR landed on Basilio?? or Fulmer??

Same situation... both men apart for a moment.. and BANG!!!.. Precise hook lands. Unfortunately, Walcotts hook had a little less substance.

I dont know if Walcott's hook had less substance, we seen him land it before with devstating effect...I think people underestimate Rocky's power to recup quickly, despite his subtle defence, Rocky was hit like Chris said' by a pin-point precision power punch. Walcott had a great hook (Charles will tell you) but he also had a hell of a right hand, sneaky(put Louis down 3 times) on top of that Walcott had one of the best set of footwork next to Ali and Tunney and could set himself for a solid punch from odd and cagey angles.....Walcott was a cutie extrodinare with power in both hands...But you are right that the way Walcott could find a chin with a power shot was simular to SSR

I was very fond of Mike the Bounty Hunter too.. RIP..

I was always around Mike when he trained under Tyrone Boone in Las Vegas.......

Yep, similar knockout punches... i wouldn't say Walcott's hook had a little less substance, though. SRR was more aggressive by nature and as a result scored more knockouts, but that "unseen" punch from Walcott was a killer.

Always though that,,,,,,,,,,,,

Eddie Machen was the 'classic cutie',,,,,,,who could sneak a good punch in once in a while.
