View Full Version : First day training, shoulder pain

Soreness is to be expected, but just to be on the safe side I wanted to ask y'all. Today was my first day training, and my shoulder (particularly the left) is sore like a ------! I've had surgery on my left shoulder before, and it doesn't seem like it's anything other than the muscle, I think the anterior deltoid mainly just being really sore, but what have y'all to say? That's normal right? Haha thanks

Hey,
I had a shoulder pain that kept me from boxing during one whole year. After my workouts it was bothering me, but I continued to the point that I was really feeling pain and I stopped. It's still not completely healed. If i can give you an advice : put ice, do a LOT of stretching and strengthen it with really light weights. Really take care of it because it's the worst injury, if you need to take 2-4 weeks of do it...

Only you know how sore it is.
What type of pain is it, ache, sharp pain when moving, if the pain is when you move, what movements make the pain worse?
Did you warm up properly? If so, what did you do? Did you stretch? How did you stretch?
When did you first feel the pain? What were you doing when you felt then pain?
What surgery did you have, when did you have it, did you get clearance from your doc to train?
To echo the above posters comments, exercise great care with shoulder injuries, they can be extremely severe and can take a long, long time to heal.

No sharp pains, that's why I'm not too worried. More of a soreness that is aggravated by movement. I think I got it from the heavy bag. No, I didn't stretch. The muscles were pretty strained and tired just doing the routine, first noticed that halfway through a jabbing exercise that I started the day with.
I dislocated my shoulder a couple times and the joint was pretty much ruined; the surgeon tightened it up messing with the ligaments or something and he cleared me for the Marines and weightlifting, so it should be good, but I definitely notice it hurting when I bench too much or don't wait long enough between workouts.

I've been training for 3 days now and experiment the same kind of muscle soreness in my shoulder and yes especially in my left shoulder..
I think it's perfectly normal because you need to build up the shoulder endurance needed for keeping your arms up all the time and hitting the bag repeatedly..
I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you are feeling sharp pain.

Hehe yeah..I laughed when I read the thread because that's exactly what I've been experiencing.
Give it a day or two..
I think that you will find that in the main, this has come about from a lack of stretching. If you care as much for not injuring your shoulder as you mention above, then you better make time for stretching. Given the fact that you have had a serious shoulder injury in the past, and that you still experience pain with it during certain exercises, I am very surprised that you would hit the heavy bag with no form of pre-workout stretching.
If you value your shoulder (which you should) perfom a full warmup, to include joint rotations, light aerobic work and dynamic stretching prior to every workout, and I don't mean just the shoulder, you only get one body in this life so you should look after every joint. In addition to the dynamic stretches, I would also advise you to perform some light static stretches before bed.

Soreness and pain are two different things. Only you can tell the difference.
