Tua added to Soaring Eagle!
by Andre Courtemanche
David Tua, after his spectacular first round KO win last weekend, has been added to the Soaring Eagle Casino show to replace Joe Mesi who backed out with a bad back. Tua will join Hasim Rahman and Vernon Paris on September 7 in Mt. Pleasant Michigan, on a card being promoted by Carlos Llinas of CLIP boxing and Bluecap Promotions. "This is the biggest card with huge names to land in Michigan for a long time. I'm excited that Bluecap, CLIP Boxing and Soaring Eagle Casino were able to bring it to Michigan," stated Llinas. Opponents for all three will be announced soon.

Who's Vernon Paris?
He's a 140 pound prospect from Detroit, MI. He survived a shooting a few years back. From what I have seen, he still has a lot of work, but he is very good defensively and exceptionally fast. Doug Fischer said his fighting style was like a poor-man's Floyd Mayweather. Cocky kid, but has some real potential. In an article on ESB a few months ago, the author said he hadn't seen moves such as the one's this kid employs since a young Pernell Whitaker, so I am defeintely interested.

Thanks for the link.
A 15-0, 19 year old lightweight...well, so far so good for the chap, I suppose.
EDIT - survived a shooting?

He was shot three times point blank with a .22, including once in the head. It's a pretty amazing story, and this article is a good read.

Vernon "Iceman" Paris is certainly an interesting prospect. I've seen him fight on TV a couple of times and he has looked pretty good. He's young and seems dedicated. If he fought for Kronk he would probably be more well known, but the Detroit media pretty much ignores Detroit area boxers unless they fight for Emanuel Steward.

Oh. Well the real emphasis there was on hoping this isn't charged as a PPV. :yep

Indeed. Tua, even today's Tua, will lay the glass-jawed Rahman out cold.:yep

At least Tua was relatively low weight and is ready to jump back in the ring immediatley.

You mean like how they fought to a draw 4 years ago (and even that was probably a gift for Tua)? Or do you mean like the quick stoppage the ref gave Tua while Rahman was on his feet and fighting back in 98?

Should be a good card. I think Tua is gaining steem on his comeback.
I am not so enthused about Rahman, though, but we'll see.

Him and Rachman arn't fighting are they?.....they are just on the same card.

No just fighting on the same card. although if both win as you'd expect it would be a good fight cross-roads for both guys and the 3rd fight between them so far its 1-0-1 in Tuas Favour, I think if they fought again now Tua would catch a shop worn Rahman.
Vinny Maddalone would be a good opponent for Tua it would be a war while it lasted probably all of 1 or 2 rounds before Tua send him home in a stretcher!

It should be 2-0 in Rahman's favour, if it wasn't for an after-the-bell shot and a dumbass ref in the first, and a moronic judge or two in the second.
Still, that's history...maybe they might consider a third go-round, if it made ranking sense. At this point in time I image they'll have their eyes strictly on fights that push them towards another title shot.

BS. Tua has never been legitimately knocked down. A shot after the bell when you're off balance doesn't count. Go show me where Rahman scored a knockdown from almost a jab.

Adding Tua and Paris certainly make that card more attractive. I wouldnt drive up and pay money just to see Rahman after I sat through his fight in Rochester in June.
Too bad the fight is not down here in Detroit; I was hoping with the casinos being here we'd get some more fight cards but it hasn't really worked out that way.

No, if it was just Rahman, I would say forget it. But Tua makes the trip worth it in my opinion and Paris isn't a bad addition as well.
True, it's ashame there aren't too many fights in Detroit, especially considering all of the relatively new casinos...oh well:good

You know, I'd care about these old Lewis victims if they fought each other, but when they keep on having "double-header" cards featuring mediocre performances against poor opposition, I frankly don't care.
Here's to Tua and Rahman fighting someone like Eddie Chambers or Sam Peter in a "passing the torch" fight, as is the role of such boxers.

That was a flash knockdown, quite unlike the legitimate pasting Tua gave him with that shot AT the bell, and then finishing the job in the next round. Bottom line, Tua has an iron jaw and a thunderous punch - Rahman has a glass-jaw.
Rahman will not make it to the final bell, count on it. :yep

I've seen Paris fight three times. Good hand speed, footspeed, and some nice pop. The last fight I saw he knocked out the guy who knocked out Paez Jr. It was my first time seeing him really brawl with somebody and he show'd a good chin. There comparing him to Floyd Mayweather but I think he has more power than Floyd had.

Thanks for the scouting report. I saw that fight you are speaking of on TV, and I would agree with your assessment of Paris. It would be nice to see him take off.
