View Full Version : Calzaghe on bullying

Interesting interview here where he talks about being bullied at school. It makes you wonder what kind of positive effect it had on his mentality in his career and if he would have had the same winning mentality had he had an easy time of it in school.

No one bullied me at school because they knew I would always go one step further then they would. Bullies don't like to get a taste of their own medicine.

That must have been terrible. He was from a small town so he must have felt rejected from his community too.

there was probaly a bit of macho / ego / jealously about here was this young good looking lad in Joseph Calzaghe

and boys be petty about it saying

"he thinks he is some kind of Champion boxer"

"do you think your hard or something"

"lets all get him after school boys"

Joe was "special" so they picked on him

I work with a guy who was in the same school as Calzaghe at the same time. I think he was either in the year above or the year below, I can't remember.
However he says he never really saw any evidence of Joe being bullied. He doesn't say that he was or that he wasn't, he just says he doesn't recall seeing or hearing anything about it.

Also, Joe had a bit of a reputation in the amateurs as being arrogant and big headed, and he wasn't particualrly well liked. Everytime I've spoken with him he's been ok, and I can only speak for myself, but there are plenty of people who seem to have plenty of stories of what a tosser Joe can be.
Again, in my own personal experience he's been alright, so I'm not claiming any different, just subjectively pointing out he does appear to have a bit of a reputation.

Not really - I live 50 or 60 miles away from Cwbrawn so it is not local enough

However the only story I heard about Calzaghe was he goes out to Caridff nightclubs with bouncers surrounding him and he just stares at people really mean like he is going to punch their faces in :lol::lol:

It's the way that Joe's support for a anti-bullying awareness scheme is being criticised by some bloke who used to know some one who' brother went to school with him.

It's a very bitter take on it...

Joe is recanting his bad experience in the hope someone else can relate to their own situation and take heart in his strength and success in living a happy life.

Of all the big name pros I've met, I can honestly say they've all been very pleasant and down to earth nice guys. I've never met anyone who's been a real prick (or at least acted it towards me). I've even randomly bumped into boxers in the street (Michael Gomez in Manchester and Souleymane M'Baye in Cardiff) when they were "off duty", just minding their own business, and they've still had the good grace to stop and chat. I think generally most boxers are pretty decent guys.

Evander Holyfield though did seem a little aloof. He wasn't rude or particularly unpleasant, just kind of got the impression he was preoccupied.

Because he never knew why he didn't get the respect he thought he deserved for being a 10 year "Champ" in his WBO reign of error

He was calling himself a legend of the sport before he fought Manfredo Jr and claiming he has achived everything and doesn't need to prove anymore

Strange how he liked to showboat and humiliate his opponents in the ring when he could. Considering that and certain aspects of his career he seems to have a little bit of the bully in himself. At least it's only in the ring against a willing opponent so it's ok, but it's interesting.

Colin Jones hammered him in the ring

Smashed him with kidney punches until he was "squealing on the floor like a pig"

It was a grudge fight at the time - Cardiff V Swansea

Colin Jones trained for the fight behind my back garden

But Colin was hitting him to the kidenys really fighting nasty and KO'd him in the 6th round I believe

John Conteh was actually alright, but my dad said his brothers where bell ends.

No Marks..

They tried to live off being John Contehs brother, fair play like..

It wouldn't surprise me if one of the Calzaghe stories were true.

He's often alluded to it himself in interviews, talking about being drunk and finding out "things are different than in the ring" when he's had one too many.

Yeah, like I say, it's just the regular bullshit that does the rounds. Sad. I've heard about five or six different versions of Joe getting sparked and I recall similar urban myths circulating about Naz back in the day.

Joe has a big rant about Naz in his book. He said he, Naz and Carl Thompson all went to a WBO convention in the states togeather and while he said Naz was alright to him but was picking on Carl the whole weekend about things like "How much did u make for your last fight Carl??" "How much? I wouldn't take a piss for that" and eventually Carl just snapped and told Naz to shut it or he would get a slap. He also said that Naz teased Eubank one time saying "shows yer belt" at the Airport and Eubank gave him a cuff and they had to be seperated.

hard to concentrate on the interview when all i can look at is his eyebrows. if your going to shave your eyebrows joe you need to not let stubble grow back. bit gay isnt it? a boxer shaving his eyebrows?
plus iv also noticed that he has one of the largest head to body ratios in great britain.

I remember the Naz/Eubank thing at the airport making the news at the time. Great scene in the "Little Prince, Big Fight" documentary where Eubank visits Naz at his hotel and starts reciting poetry. TV gold that one! :rofl

I agree. Whether you like Joe or not, if his stories are true or somewhat embellished, it doesn't really matter, at least he's adding his weight to something positive. :good

Rumours are.........When Marciano was over here during his time in the military he got sparked in The Adelphi by a Swansea Jack.

I've heard many variations on this. The most popular one - and I have actually seen this in print somewhere - is that he sparked out somebody in a Cardiff pub whilst stationed here on military service. I did hear it was The Westgate but I'm not sure about that.

I suppose we can only speak from our own experiences. I met Naz at the Steve Robinson v Freddie Cruz fight in Cardiff in 1994 and he was came across as a super nice guy. I was 11 years old and this was the first fight I had ever attended live. Naz was amazing, he signed autographs for us, posed for pictues and chatted to me and my Uncle throughout the fight.

Admittedly this was before he had won a world title and became a superstar and I never saw or spoke to him after this but it always baffles me when people recount negative tales of meeting Naz coz this certainly wasn't my experience of meeting him.

Maybe it did all got to his head when he started having major success but I think that Naz we saw and tv and the Naz outside of the media spotlight were two different people.

u want interesting stories check out eamonn magee's history......mental isnt the word

my mate has no interest in boxing but has it in his mind he wants to make some sort of movie about him

1989- looks wrong way at a crowd and they jump him he fights back then they stick a glass bottle in his neck, cutting a artery

1992-accused of anti social behaviour and then shot in the legs by the PIRA

1993- throws up the head after people even questioning whether or not he should go to the olympics and doesnt go as a protest

takes 2 years off.....

1994 arrested after mass brawl destroys belfast city centre pub

2004, Magee was attacked in the Blacks Road area of Belfast. He was pulled from his car and beaten with a baseball bat, he had his leg broken and knee fractured lung collapsed

also admits after flooring hatton he stepped back, as he had been drinking before the fights and doing no road work, didnt trust his fitness enough to risk going for the KO and failing and being gassed out

na he wont talk about it but its usually nothing to do with politics, more to do with drug dealing joy riding , stealing from houses and the like, the beating he took 1989 and the one with the baseball bats nearly killed him

Where ya from Gaz?

Boy that is a blast from the past. I remember Jim Watt losing a fight in Lagos, Nigeria against Dele Jonathan for the Commonwealth Lightweight title. I think it was around 1974 OR 1975. Watt would later go on and win the world title until he ran into the great Arguello. Watt also beat Olympian Howard Davies Jnr and one of my personal favorites the exciting Sean O' Grady. The late Dele Jonathan one of the best ever to come out of Nigeria unfortunately would never fight for the world title eventually losing the Commonwealth when he was past his best to an excellent fighter from Guyana Lennox Blackmore.

Matthew Hall? I've not heard that story! What happened there?

In all honesty, I'm fairly surprised nobody has had a pop at Enzo Calzaghe before now. He has been pretty vicious and offensive with his words in the past, especially to Joe's opponents. I'm sure he must have got somebody's back up at some point.

Ugly Pete Judson once threatned to drag Naseem Hamed out of the gym and smash his teeth out against the pavement.

Naz aparantly went quiet and began to "behave" himself.

The irony in the story is Judson himself has probaly got none of his natural teeth left either !!!

Damn, stories about me seem to spread around fast these days. Yeah, I was the one who fought joe in the pub. You see, he stepped on my new nike's. p4p great or not, no one gets away with that shit. So I had a word with him about it, next thing you know, i took a swing at him, he ducked it easily, little did i know enzo big mac was standing right behind him (lifting beer kegs over his head), my punch didnt exactly reach him, it sort of grazed his eyebrow area, but I broke his jaw. And he went crashing into the floor. As i turned back to see what joe was doing, i got slapped, hard. I stumbled backwards toward the wall and got slapped silly. Left and right slaps, my cheeks were damaged man. luckily somone stepped in and waved it off before i started getting dizzy. Joe as usual went around proclaiming that he was now the number 1 atg since he beat a man who KOED the best cruiserweight in the world. While i am a little embarassed, i gotta say im proud that im now number 2 in the cruiser divison :bbb(second to joe ofcourse)

Thick as shit unfortunately. He also has some glaring flaws in his make up. Like I said before, he will be knocked out several times over before his career is out if he doesn't change his approach. I wish him luck, I have a feeling he's gonna need it.

His interviews and comments in the media.

To be fair, having read the article by Colin Hart there is no direct quote from Hall in reference to the Calzaghe incident.
As for his interviews, in the ones I've seen he seems to come across quite well and level headed.
More so than Pryce and Small.

Hall sounds like a mouthy cunt and he got TKO'ed by Conception. Theres people on other forums who mentioned how mouthy he was.

Surely if it was only an arguement then he wouldn't be offering Joe outside.

This is how a Calzaghe/Hall streetfight ends.:smoke

It's never gonna work for him. The mouthy twat approach is only gonna work if you're hard as nails, for example, a James Toney or Bernard Hopkins. For most it's only gonna succeed in making you look like a total tit the next time you're spread out on the canvas.

For what its worth Ive known a few folks who were bullied at school and they really havent ever got over it,i think most folks who are bullied for a long time or badly enough carry its effects for all their lives.I see one chap in my local every once in a while who I used to sort of protect at school,a quiet shy lad, very bright he was but just could not stand up for himself, those bullies ruined his life pretty much.I see some of the same effects on Joe,you can see he is naturally quite shy/intoverted.****** has many times in the past even when him and Joe were getting along ok ****** would mention that Joe hated being the centre of attention which led him to doing very little promotion of his own fights.Ive never had much time for bullies meself but you can only do so much for the bullied yourself.Against bullies as one poster pointed out you have to be prepaired to go one step further than them.
