Amir Khan

Don't know if that's who I'd choose but I reckon Amir should be up their.

To win the Commonwealth title so quickly and so young would be outstanding in anyone elses book.

Well two points I'd like to make , one is that Kevin Anderson is 24 now and far too established for a young boxer of the year award and two that Khan does deserve to be on that list[shudder:oops:] .

I went with John Fewkes , he's looked quality to me and has just got 3 very good wins Scott Haywood , Craig Watson and Tontcho Tontchev .

Khan, whether you like him or not he deserves it.

I say Khan. I don't want to vote for anyone on that list.

Not sure Anderson belongs there.

Fewkes has had a good year and has been steadily improving. He is not in a position to contend with the top domestic fighters but by this time next year if he his moved on with more faded pro's of Tontchev class then he may be something special on these shores. I pick him for young fighter due the the promise he has shown and the fact that I dont like Derry too much and Amir is in a different league to anyone on the list.

Fewkes for me, the best year imo.

"dirty derry" - explain how, one close points win all year in a fight he should have been DQ'd in.

To PrideOfWales, what are your reasons for not including Khan?

at this point i'd say fewkes, just for his step-up performance against Tontchev.

i like ando, he put on a good performance against magee this year, but he made his debut over 4 years ago. he can't really be considered a rookie in the same way as fewkes, cleverly and belshaw are.

edit: i just remembered that fewkes has been a pro for a few years as well, just not very active...

Fewkes. Firstly, because of his quality performances as of late particularly against Tontchev. Secondly, abit of Yorkshire bias:lol:

From that list it has to be Sheffield's John Fewkes for me. Unbeaten and has just come off a career best victory against a former european champion.

Was being talked about as a possible opponent for Khan in October - not to be but could see this match-up in the future.

if he beats andy morris on friday what about john simpson? that is my biased opinion obviously but he has did well narrowly losing to derry matthews and stropping ryan barett if he can add andy morris to that list for a 2nd time then why not?

though as much as i ahte to say it i think amir khan probarly deserves it.

also for next years anyone think paul appleby could be a contender for young boxer of the year 2008?

He looks very impressive early on, I have a bad feeling about the true extent of his potential though.

Hi,

How good is Scott Belshaw???

I have heard that he is a tall heavyweight.

Is he a puncher? Good jab? Stylewise is he
more like Foreman or Ali?

Any more British Heavyweight prospects that
you know of?

Grebfan9

PS - wish I had all of you guys posting on my new
boxing message board. Just getting started up with
it. You guys are really knowledgeable!!!

Really felt for Simpson in that Matthews bout and hope he does well this Friday.

I know Appleby is another young scottish featherweight like Simpson -
how highly do you rate him?

Well what impresses people most is the variety of punches he throws. The way he'll siwtch to the body, then back to the head, throwing from all different angles. It is somewhat unusual in such a young fighter.

However these combinations come when his opponents go into their shell only.

The rest of the time he throws one shot at a time.

His speed is ok, not great. They seem to lack that bit of snap.

Accuracy very good so far.

Head movement etc are all good - but he is trained by a top trainer.

I think he could be the next best thing to come out of scotland after scott harrison if he keeps learning the way he is. if you look at the clips from even his 3rd fight and the fight against nagy you can see the vast improvment already. I think him along with craig mcewan who is in america learning his trade and is with golden boy promotions can really put scotland back on the world stage again in years to come. Have you seen much of craig mcewan CHJ?

I think no.11 is being bit generous!!

he hasnt fought anyone even european class never mind world class! Simpson and Foster are good domestic fighters but thats the best hes fought so i think you could be right about ******. sport is becoming far too corrupt for my liking no wonder alot of people are more interested in UFC now.

I like my featherweights to be snappier but he can turn out fairly decent, I don't see him reaching the level of Arthur or Harrison though. I suppose he is one of the better prospects the Brits have right now.

Not seen McEwan yet.

Havent seen very much myself of McEwan myself just know hes 6-0(5) and with golden boy promotions but read alot about him and he seems to be destined for the top and thats according to the US press so fingers crossed.

also McEwan is trained by freddie roach so cant imagine freddie wasting much time with someone who hasnt the potential to go right to the very top.

Theres no such thing as the UFC threat.

Maybe In America but not In Europe.

Think this poll is based on those nominated and announced by the British Boxing Writers Club and not ESB members as such - hence the noteable absentees!

Fewkey is the man. Was supposed to fight today in Sheffield but nobody wanted to stand up. But.... BIG fight scheduled next month

Paul Appleby for me too (although I voted Ando due to his tough choice of opponents)

Young Appleby has came on leaps and bounds so far, I think somebody mentioned the difference between the Higginson and Nagy fights already, the difference is huge. He was over in the US last year and was sparring with Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista at Roach's gym and they were all very impressed with the youngster so hopefully we'll see him in with some better opposition in the next year or two :)

Hi NOrth.

Yes - if you clink on the link posted by PrideOfWales on the first page of this thread it explains more.

From the list of nominees at least Anderson and Matthews were born the same year. Anderson is already 24 and Matthews will be this month - I can only assume this falls into the criteria for the award.
