very good fighter, fantastic co-commentator very good technical knowledge, always tells you what each fighter needs to do to win unlike buncey who the closest he gets to any analysis is "he needs to keep his head"
Woodhall is a great bloke, looks like he's gonna be a good trainer and makes shite commentators like jim neilly (the olympics) bearable. great ambassidor for the sport
Richie is awesome:thumbsup

judging by your location not a surprise, i like mcGuigan but he's better as a post fight analyst, woodhall does a great job as a blow-by-blow co-commentator.
Probably right on the location bit. McGuigan when he was a commentator at the fight instead of the studio was very good though.

woodhall has empathy for the fighters and really comes into his own when with someone like buncey who obviously hasn't got the same knowledge and talks alot of fluff.

i'm guessing thats andy lee in your avator, the next tommy hearns according to manny steward, no no no manny
Ishy, your pic looks like one of those posing Facebook/Myspace types.
I don't even want to know where you got that.
Its andy lee yes but im not deluded. Andy still is a good fighter but the next tommy hearnes is joke comparison. The only thing they have in common is they are tall.
Manny was a complete arsehole to put this big of an expectation on Andy after so little fights.
So what's wrong with supporting a fighter from my home country?

i didn't say there was anything wrong with it.
manny always hypes his fighters the guys got soo many roles, businessman, trainer, commentator and an unhealthy influence with HBO
i still think AL can pick up a strap though he's got all the physical attributes. so do you think he just underestimated his opponent in that loss? he took some big shoots from a tough but limited fighter.
I'm really starting to dislike manny he done the same thing to Jonathan Banks built the guy up and wasn't even there on his biggest night.

Telford based Woodall is a decent human being
A family man
Father Ted trained him
Humble and honest - and a solid pro who was good enough to win the WBC World Super Middleweight title
Gave Roy Jones a decent fight in the Olympics
Lost in a WBC title fight to Keith Holmes went down brave in the final round where Don King fucked him around and hampered his preparation
Lost to Joseph Calzaghe in 10 rounds
Woodall like to spend time with his family and go fishing with his dad
He done 12 rounds of training over various different things
bag
pads
floor to ceiling
speedball
and sparring
and various floor execises
there was a excellent programme on in the 1990's that featured exculsively Richie Woodall and Roy Jones Jnr and gave a insight into their lifes and showed them at work in the gym - did anyone else see it - ?

Woodhall, he was a much better boxer than Froch, not big at the weight as a super middle but I still think he'd win on points.

He was nearly blown away by German Markus Beyer - I remeber watching that in shock.
I didnt think Beyer could punch much - but Woodall had a torrid opening 3 rounds.

Woodall was a upright European style boxer
He wan the European title too - against Silvio Branco
I remeber the Malinga fight - he floored him in the 3rd round - WBC title win
This was the Malinga who had beaten Nigel Benn and Robin Reid in WBC title fights

I was a fan of Richie Woodhall's right through his boxing career and still am today. Very dignified and respected by his peers. "Believe you me".
Unfortunately he was hampered by an elbow injury during the latter stages of his career which really effected his preparations and ability.
I don't always agree with some of what he says on his commentary (a tad biased towards Calzaghe sometimes) but a great ambassador for the sport though, and I like him a lot.

My mate Derek Wormald fought Richie Woodhall for his European. Gave him plenty of problems before goin down in the 10th. The night had tragic consequences when one of our trainers,Peter Mcilhinney, collapsed inthe corner from a heart attack and later died. spoke to richie at the hatton fight in november and he commented on what a tough fight derek had given him on that night.Great bloke, great boxer.

I remember Derek, a good solid domestic fighter. Went in with some tough fighters, Stretch, Dodson, Eastman and Woodhall. Only ever lost to the best domestic fighters.

He was one of my favourite british boxers. Very good technically, always prepared very thoroughly and turned up committed and in great shape. The consumate pro and like many others have said a very good commentator who is both informative to the casual fan without being patronising to the more discerning spectator

Woodhall was a quality fighter, such a shame he injured his right elbow when he did just before his world middleweight title challenge. He was never the same after that, surgery dident fix it and it pretty much took away what chance he had at world level.

Thats right mate. But a 34yr old Wormald at the end of his career against an unbeaten Eastman on his way to a world title shot.It was another chance at the British title he couldnt turn down. No shame in that defeat at all mate. Eastman went on to prove what a good fighter he was.

Seems like a nice person; professionally he comes across as very classy, which is even more amazing for someone with a Dudley accent!;)
But to be serious, as a fighter he was very impressive and thoughtful.
What Brit now a days decides he needs another couple of years as an amateur, after winning an Olympic medal?
As a pro, Woodhall was a steady consistent fighter who was well schooled and could handle himself with anyone at 160/168.
Ring rust cost him a lot against Holmes, but to comeback like he did at 168 was a sign of how good he was.
The Malinga fight was well thought out, and he handled himself like a true pro after the Catley bout.
He showed his will sucking it up in both the Beyer and Calzaghe fights.
As a former pro turned commentator he is better than Barry Stating the bleedin' obvious McGuigan; Glenn Did I mention I sparred a 100 rounds with Tyson? McCrory and Duke cliche McKenzie. And right up there IMO with Jim Watt.

Yep, Calzaghe actually justifies his notorious habit of pulling out with injuries by referencing Woodhall going through with the Holmes fight when he shouldn't have.
