considering he was never knocked down, and only lost to lennox lewis...how far do you think he could have gotten these days ?

Probably to a losing title shot at one of the Klits.

British contender and possible Euro title fighter. Not sure he could have gone further.

He'd have cleaned up domestically and been found out when he stepped up -a bit like he was back then.

To be fair it was only eye damage that finished his career. He could have bounced back from that defeat and grabbed something otherwise. It was Lennox after all.

It's hard to tell how good Gary Mason would have been today, as we never saw him reach his full potential. His record was heavily padded with easy knockouts, and then he faced Lennox Lewis, who finished his career.
If he carried on fighting after the Lewis loss, he may have been a good name on the Heavyweight scene, like Frank Bruno was. It's a shame we never found out, as he put on a pretty decent effort against Lewis, if I remember rightly.....

He may have won a version of the world title today. He was actually not a bad boxer at all.

i was never a big fan of him back then - thought he was slow and predictable...but he was hard as nails with a great chin on that massive head...shame him and bruno never got it on..
i actually used to enjoy his big smiley head as a sky sports pundit back in the 90's.
where is he now??

Gary was my neighbour when i was a kid. He used to train us occasionally. He was a really nice guy.
I cannot think of anyone who would beat him domestically today, or even in Europe. At world level and using his performance against Lennox as a gauge then he would be in with a shout. Good chin. Good Jab. Strong. Lazy and often did not train. But no one today is unbeatable or outstanding .

He fought Lennox when Lennox was pretty inexperienced and I can't recall him really beating anyone of world class - his record was very padded.
Think he'd be able to beat most of the domestic competition more times then not, but still short of world top ten - even as poor as it is now.
Didn't he have a shop, 'Punch and Jewellary'?

Mason had a ticker and a decent wallop, but I still think even today he struggles to beat anyone who is genuine top 10 material.
I went to the Biggs fight, and Mason was on the verge of losing (he had blown up and was gasping), before that big body shot.
Mason though, probably has a field day with domestic opposition, much like he did in the late 80s (ask Jess Harding; actually don't, he probably does not realize he fought Gary!).

He'd be an alphabet cruiserweight champ, and a pretty decent one.
Too small to do much at heavy.
Good honest fighter, Gary. Terrible business idea though, that world arm wrestling championships. Think he must have seen Sly Stallone in 'Over the Top' too many times

Gary Mason Cruiserweight weight title holder??????:scaredas:
He ate far too many pies, even in his prime to be able to boil down to 200lbs!
At his 6'2" 240-245lbs fighting prime, even today, size would be the least of Mason's worries.

If he had trained a little harder and layed of the bad food he would have been in with a chance of getting a top 10 rating and a title fight. Not much differant than when he was in his prime.

You might be thinking of the 'other one' of the three in Lawless' heavyweight camp, Horace Notice.

No, can't use that excuse, I was definitely thinking of Mason. And I was a lot smaller back then too..

He scared the shite out of Lennox, from what I recall, once he was practically blinded. he swinging like a complete lunatic.
It was the first really big win of Lewis' career, cos Mason was rated summat like number seven or eight by one of the then three major sanctioning bodies - WBC, I think.
today hewould definitely have achieved what he did then, but very slow still. He'd be ranked, which is why all this shite about Haye not deserving a title shot is nonsense. Him (given what he achieved at cruiser and his obvious skills), the Klits, Povetkin and maybe Solis are clearly on a massively higher level than anyone else in the heavy division.

While it doesn't look too impressive looking back it was quite some fight for Lewis to take at the time.

Yeah, Lewis had a lot of those didn't he? At the time I had no idea how much we'd appreciate him in the end

Bruno did well against Lewis, but Mason, whilst brave, was made to look quite crude. If Mason's eye had held up, he would have simply taken a beating longer than needed.

Gary did better against Lewis than most. Better than Ruddock, Tucker and other top fighters. He may not have been winning, but he did have Lennox under severe pressure at times.
last time i saw him was about 5 years ago and he was working as a security guard in St Helier hospital near Croydon. Might have been longer.

I saw him on the Tube about 5 years back. He had a video tape in his hand with the words "Mason's Venture's" written on the side.
I've always wondered what was on that tape......
