I've just arrived home in Glasgow from Fort William, a small town in the Scottish Highlands, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain. I was MC at the first boxing show to be held there in over 20 years, a 500 sell out which would have sold double if the capacity had been there. It may only be 110 miles north of Glasgow but the single, twisting roads means that you could drive from Birmingham to Glasgow in about the same time.
It was amateur boxing, a great show, testament to the effort put in by the coaches of the recently formed Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club.
Something that made the show really special was the attendance of Willie Limond, Ricky Burns and trainer Billy Nelson. The three of them were invited as guests and made the long trip north on a miserable Scottish day to support the Scottish boxing fraternity.
They got into the ring, posed for photos, signed autographs and donated signed gloves, which raised a staggering £1,250 for this young boxing club. At the auction, both boxers got into the ring and posed for photos with the successful bidders, wearing the gloves that they had just purchased. Willie was so staggered that his gloves made £750, he promised to send the buyer a pair of his boxing shorts upon his return to Glasgow. The fact that she was blonde and stunning may just have had a bearing on his decision :hey I was quite pleased, I got a kiss. Off the blonde that is, not Limond, I'm not kissing him again!
It's just great to see these guys making the effort and giving so much pleasure to so many people without asking for anything in return. :happy
