I would expect you wont notice it in the heat of a fight, though you will afterwards.

What helped for me is running backwards a lot, it made my calves very strong and they rarely bother me in the gym anymore.

yes this is true.applying ice and gentle stretching also helps
i used to have trouble with my right calf muscle and was told to change my running shoes(physio) to anything but NIKE and it worked

Are you orthodox? The right calve takes quite a beating in orthodox stance.
I went for running shoes and they tried to sell me Nikes with big soles. I run about half the distance sideways and backwards, and I also run off road a lot so I don't want that, fuck cushioning. I ended up buying Nike Zoom Marathoner's. Very light shoe, I'm very pleased with it.

I wanted a neutral shoe because of all the sideways and backwards running btw.

i didn't have the calf trouble when i boxed,it was years after when i started running. someone advised me to use saucony and because they had deep lugs on the soles they were good off-road too.
if i'd been as good at boxing as i was at running backwards
i could have been a contender

I get a tight left calf when I run and afterwards for awhile too. Only my left though. I must run in a wonky fashion. Stretching more before and after helped.

It would be better to generally improve on your diet, staring blind on potassium is useless. A healthy diet will automatically be rich in potassium, but also rich in other micronutrients.
