View Full Version : Bigger boxing LEGEND: Mike Tyson or Oscar Delahoya?
Hoax976

Within the last 2 decades, boxing has had some very big names. Roy Jones Jr, Aurturo Gatti, Evander Holyfield are a few, but the two biggest names of the sport in the last 20 years are without a doubt Mike Tyson and Oscar Delahoya. When these two boxers fought, it was like the super bowl. Especially when both fighters were in their primes.
Who has the bigger name of the two? Who reaches bigger "legendary" status?
I'm gonna go with Tyson. He might be the biggest name in boxing since Ali. Some may say Tyson cheated in this contest to all his out side of the ring controversy, but nevertheless, I think he takes this one. Despite fighting out of his prime, Delahoya is still probably the biggest draw in boxing today, but Tyson has him beat in over all legendary status.
Your thoughts?

tyson by a landside Tyson is the most loved villain of all time and if you ask somebody of the street to name 3 former champs 99% of the time tysons name will be said
TYSON!!!
When I was a kid and Tyson would fight, the world would stop. My parents friends who never watched boxing in their lives would stay up till midnight to see 2 minutes of destruction. Oscar doesnt touch that.

I have to go with Tyson but not easily, Oscar is a household name just like Mike is. Great question and the debate is very close, but Iron Mike is just the man.i live in engalnd and my mum is totally against boxing she is typical boxer hater in that it's a distructive brutal violant thing ect ect.butshe has never ever heard of a guy called oscar delahoya. but tyson naseem hamed, muhhamad ali, she knows about she even knows more about amir khan more than oscar...please man this thread is almost possible to go in the lounge

Oscar is the biggest star right now in boxing.
Tyson in the late 80s and early 90s, was quite possibly the biggest star in all of sports. He was certainly one of the biggest stars in all of sports, forget about just boxing.
Sports Illustrated is probably the premiere mainstream sports magazine in America. Oscar made the cover this year for what I believe was the first time in his life. Tyson made the cover before he was champ, when he beat Berbick, when he beat Tucker, when he beat Holmes, when he beat Spinks, when he married Robin Givens, when he lost to Douglas, when he beat Ruddock (both times), when he went to prison, when he came back, when he fought Holyfield (both times), before he fought Lewis.

Tyson's number of SI covers are nowhere near that of Ali and Jordan.
Ali used to have the most, but I think Jordan passed him.

Tyson beyond a doubt at least in the english speaking world. ODH may have made a bigger splash in the Spanish community. But I disagree that Tyson is the biggest name of all time, I'd give that to Ali.

tyson easily, the youngest undisputed heavyweight lineal champ in history. that easily ranks higher than oscar whose biggest win was against vargas and if i'm not mistaken was never the lineal or undisputed champ in the divisions he fought in.

Tyson for me is in the top 5 all time great HW champs, I dont give a shit what other peoples opinions are of him, in hes hey day he was unstoppable dont give me any bullshit about him being a bully or anyone who stood up to him beat him bullshit. He was the man.
And to answer your question, Tyson is along side Muhammad Ali as the sports legends, them two are un parrelled in terms of fame.

i stand corrected. youngest belt holder, but became linear at 22 after defeating spinks who was considered holmes successor. while patterson was champ at 21 if i'm not mistaken. big tyson fan here and i agree with what you say. i believe he would have given champs like ali and foreman a tough fight and would destroy fossils like dempsey, johnson, louis, marciano etc... who 'historians' pick over prime tyson, which is utter bullshit.
